My Most Shitty Investments Challenge #2: Rekt by a ponzi

Ah, Ponzi schemes, you gotta love them and how they promise you that quick cash in a short space of time. I've been burnt by two Ponzi schemes in my lifetime; one of them was a pyramid/referral type scheme where you have uplines, downlines and all that shit. That one hit me for like 15,000 Naira but it didn't hurt as much because the money I "invested" was actually a gift. On second thought, it hurt because i could have bought a good shoe, some shirts and lots of drinks with that money.

Ponzi schemes can be "rewarding", particularly for the daredevils that join early. They're like the Russian Roulette of making money and once you sign in to the game, you close your eyes and hope the barrel isn't loaded when the gun comes to your head. Your luck might keep you in the game for a while but the longer you stay, the higher your chances of getting screwed.

A couple of years back, MMM was the ultimate Ponzi and it swept across the world. Everyone was in a frenzy to "invest" in this concept that literally made no sense in reality.

The concept was that you send a certain sum of money to a randomly paired person, let's call him/her "A". After you send that money, you confirm through your portal that you sent, and then the person also confirms receiving the money. When three weeks elapse, you accrue "profit" based on thin air and qualify to receive a certain amount of money from another randomly paired sucker.

The obvious problem with this system is that it is not sustainable and as I said, based on thin air. However, suckers exist and people thrive off hope of getting rich, so believe it or not, this system thrived and as I said, became a global sensation.

I got into the game with a little money here and there, and for the most part, I made a tiny profit on top my "investments". Then I thought to myself, why not just fucking go big? I did go "big", at least to me it was a lot of money, 100, 000 to be precise. A part of it actually belonged to my mum actually because I convinced her to take a punt at this thing that's been giving me money. My luck ran out at the death, and we both got rekt. I think about that shit and it still hurts till today.

Ouch... you are brave, trying to get in before it all crashes. I prefer to stay out... I do wonder if they "allow" small bets to win, to create the illusion of winning... and then take it down when the big bets come in.

I can't shake of the feeling that that is exactly what happened to me and many people. They let you win over and over again until they can fuck you over when you've gotten comfortable.

lucky enough for me i didn't have the money to invest in those Ponzi schemes when they became a thing in these parts. My cousin lost 1.4 million naira to the said Ponzi scheme. He had run out of luck as well and it did affect him significantly afterwards. Thus, I never entertain any thought about engaging in a Ponzi scheme.
