Another Week Another Dollar

This is meant to be my busy time as my clients place orders to replenish their stock levels. Some have made contact like normal already whilst others haven't which is a little unnerving. This is meant to be the time businesses think about the upswing in demand due to the oncoming Christmas rush.

In my industry things normally happen like clockwork as there are seasons where you expect to see peaks and troughs as demand spikes. We all missed the June spikes and now wondering whether we will see the end of year mad rush. It may be later this year trying to remain positive yet something tells me it isn't coming.

Over the last 3 or 4 years South Africa has been going through a mini recession of it's own hampering most businesses. Demand for goods is down and honestly the masses receiving Christmas bonuses and a 13th cheque looks more like wishful thinking. I think that is when it will hit home how lucky everyone is still to have a job and to have survived this year.

All of my clients have spoken about just ticking over and not the huge profits they would normally expect. The next 3 months would normally be the time they make enough to see them through the early part of next year until the middle of March and April. The worry I have is many will make it to Christmas but how many will make it to April?

Over the last month we have let go or refused to supply at least 10 clients so we are hunting to replace them now. There is no future in chasing bad business as they will only pull you down with them.

what has been noticeable in the last week or two is how the prices of things have just changed. The brand of coffee I drink has risen by 50 percent and makes no logical sense. The only explanation is these companies are making up for their losses over the last 6 months which in my mind is morally wrong and unjustified. An increase of 5 percent or even 10 percent but to increase by half is pure greed. From what I have seen the cost of living has risen considerably over the last 6 months which is a little unfair and a rough guess would be we are all poorer by a good 20 percent.

These are just some observations I have noticed and as much as it sickens me to think I now need to grow my business by 20 percent just to stand still. Life is not fair and I look forward to the day projects like Hive and Leo take off making others look at us saying how unfair life is. Being part of something on the ground floor that very few even know about is exciting as who knows what is going to happen next.

I do wonder how this Christmas season will do, I wonder which retailers will make it through the storm. I sure hope the Hive ecosystem keeps gaining momentum.

That is pretty horrible. I have a feeling we are heading that way soon. People are seeing all of these stock market gains and they think that things are just rosey. They are going to be feeling pretty bad when it all starts to drop. Then of course if we have a different president they will blame it on him.
