How to use HIVE encrypted memos - To get your prize!
Let me ask you, did you know that HIVE comes equipped with an encrypted messaging system? Yes, its the encrypted memos, which come from wallet transfers.
Today we are going to use these memos to send out the prizes for my Steam Key giveaway, so follow along if you are not to sure how to do it!
This is the peakd wallet transfer screen. We can do the same operation in keychain, by using '# {space} message' in the memo line, but let's start here because keychain popups are hard to screenshot. The first thing to note is that we are going to send HBD, because its cheaper than HIVE right now. We can send as low as the minimum, which is 0.001, and activate encryption by starting our message with # followed by a space. That's 'pound' or 'hashtag', for those of you not familiar with the symbol by now.
Wonderful meme from @bearbear613 in the ManCave discord.
Now, you must have your memo key in keychain for this to work. This can be added manually, 'one by one', or will be there automatically by having added your master password, which keychain splits up into the three keys 'posting', 'active' and 'memo'.
If you don't have a memo key you will get this error:
I don't have my memo key on this computer, but luckily I have another account and was able to send. The result will look something like this if you are not logged in with the memo key or if you aren't either of the two users 'sender' or 'receiver'.
If you are one of the users involved, a little lock symbol will appear on the peakd wallet. Click it to use your memo key to de-encrypt the message!
@thatgermandude and @jacobtothe, you are the winners of Sim City 4 Deluxe and Dungeons 3 keys, respectively - check your wallets for the game keys! Remember you promised to make one or more posts about playing the games, I have an additional request for you - please tag me in these posts so I can be sure to read them!
Time is not what it once was when I was a younger man. I have some interest in playing both of these games, but for now I will have to just live vicariously through your reviews, that's why I gave you the keys! Entertain me please!
For everyone - Do you have any questions about using encrypted memos? Let me know in the comments! There are more steam keys to give away at some future date, you can follow me for more varied content, from my farm and philosophy to my tokens and my tutorials.
Look at that @thatgermandude you're famous. Everywhere I go, you are already there.
The first time I saw encrypted memos on Hive was with Hive Fest that sent the entrance codes this way. A great feature that is still not utilized at its full strength.

Indeed, these MEMO's are vastly underused.
I feel the same! Someone should build an encrypted email dapp using this feature.

This is a feature I was completely unaware of. Thank you for pointing it out. It's crazy how I'm continuously learning new things on and about this platform.
That's pretty cool! I have no idea you could do this.

Alright, download is running, got nothing else to play right now, so I guess I will get right to it.
Thx again for this early Christmas gift.
Merry Christmas! @ecosaint

do you ever try it to send balance to exchanges with encryption?
They'll receive it but their automatic system will probably not assign it to you due to a wrong memo.
That's what I think too. But it would be really cool :)
They dont have encryption reading set up so you will have to go through support - not a fun process!
But withdrawing from exchange that allows memo should allow you to send encrypted memo anonymously 🤔
no memo also anon by withdrawal :P
anon send yes, but no memo is not a very interesting message 😅
depends. Can include 69 in sending amount.
Means more than 1000 words to me.
Thank you very much for introducing this hive function. I think it can be useful in the future, I will implement it.
A space does not seem to be necessary after the pound sign. I tested that with a reply. I have found using encrypted memos works best for me using the native hive.blog wallet and logging in with the memo key. It requests my active key to confirm sending the transaction.
If you log into that wallet with your owner key, you should be able to access your memo key there.
Awesome.
I use keychain all the time on my desktop and I had no idea it could do this. Cheers! 🍻

Weird that the meme says most people say it as pound ... I have never once called # as pound ... because the pound symbol in English is 💷
I remember the 'press the pound key on your telephone', maybe its an american expression.
