Steal data about your GPUs

Cybersecurity is a matter of vital importance to everyone, from the most sporadic internet users to large technology companies. This week, AMD has confirmed through its website that they have been victims of a data theft by a hacker, who threatens to publish private information about their products. Data that, according to some sources, would be related to the Navi GPUs and also to the Arden, the code name of the Xbox Series X itself.

First, the North American company has confirmed the facts through the following statement:

At AMD, the protection of data and our intellectual property is a priority. In December 2019 we were contacted by someone who claimed to have test files related to a subgroup of our current and future graphics products, some of which have recently been published online but have already been recalled.

As seen in his comment, and as the record of said withdrawal on GitHub also shows, the hacker had published part of the data this week, as part of a pulse with the company that is still running:

While we are aware that the culprit has additional files that have not been released, we believe that the stolen property is not vital to the competitiveness or security of our graphics products. We are not aware that the culprit has any other AMD IP

Understandably, AMD has declined to confirm the exact products affected by this security breach, and they claim to be working with security agencies and services as part of the investigation. It remains to be seen how this situation evolves, and how it could affect future AMD products. For its part, and as confirmed last week, Microsoft maintains its Xbox Series X for the end of the year.
