Witness Node Setup

With the recent development In Hive Engine software, read Hive Engine P2P Launch Details by @eonwarped, there can, at last, be witness notes confirming Hive-Engine transactions. It is a very much needed step towards a decentralized and distributed side chain.

In May it will be five years since I've been a member of this platform. First Steem, then Hive. I always wanted to contribute to the ecosystem in more ways than just posting, commenting, and voting.

With this novelty, I see the opportunity to finally step into the shoes of a witness with the Hive-Engine witness node.

I did my first steps yesterday by reading the following official, sort of, announcements by @aggroed:

WORKERBEE

Besides setting up a node and becoming a witness you need witness votes as with Hive witnesses. Here the assets you stake and vote with is WORKERBEE.

Yesterday I bought a bit of WBs and tonight I converted my old DOGE stash into some more, then powered them up.

Three Hive-Engine witnesses that I have already cast my stake for are, with their Approval Weight before my $WORKERBEE power-up:

Every little bit helps :)

Of course, I intend to cast my vote for the full contingent of 30 witnesses. I will do that when my node will be active.

Tommorow - setting up the node, official Hive-Engine witness application.

It will be a rainy day tomorrow. An ideal opportunity to do some work :)

I'll set up the node and publish the application. I hope I'll convince you to vote for me as a Hive-Engine witness.

Hey, thanks a lot for your support. I did it this night. The official announcement is yet to come but the witness node is running already.

Of course, it's all about decentralization, distribution of the load and responsibility, about community-based governance.

At the moment, the biggest dilemma is where to lease a VPS :)

I think I'll skip Hetzner and go with Time4VPS or Avoro. I didn't decide yet.

Sounds good, i think it is a great idea to spread the witness nodes across different servers / companies

Where do I find the active signing key to be inputted into the .env ? it is not part of the normal 4 keys is it ?

Hi, you're welcome.

It's the private active key of the account you'll be using as a witness. So it is one of the infamous four Hive key pairs :)

You put the public active key in the form here (https://tribaldex.com/witnesses) by clicking on the Manage Witness button.

There you can also enable / disable your witness node.

The same can be done via script by calling:

 node witness_action.js register

or

 node witness_action.js unregister

Hive-Engine node software is now at version 1.8.0. There is a light node option too. Things are developing quite well.

Thanks for the information, with the help of Rishi on the discord I was able to finally able to get my witness online at home, it's running under the fireblaster account. It's hosted at home in my highly available infrastructure at home with IPv6. If you can send a vote to my fireblaster witness it would be much appreciated :) Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction.
