Maybe this is extreme, but why do we need branding for Hive at all? Tech specs for devs and witnesses is needed for Hive, in my opinion, that's it. And we have them, but probably can be improved.
As you remarked, the strengths of Hive can be better revealed to the regular potential user through its communities and dapps. They need branding and marketing, not Hive the blockchain!

No branding for Hive and branding for the dapps is also a nice idea.
But if you see the picture that most of people are working on on-boarding for Hive. Dapps are also working on their own but they have couple of thousand users at most.
So user who are working on on-boarding on hive will able to show complete picture instead of just blogging platform.
Starting with correct description of platform will be a great start.
That's the problem. I don't think you can have a good description for Hive that makes justice to every community and dapp that contributes to its growth and (potential) success.
And with the description we have/had for Hive/Steem, we haven't taken off. Just my remark, that's why I believe the focus should be on onboarding into communities/dapps. And the efforts should not be only theirs, users can and I believe do help, sometimes more when incentivized, but not necessarily.
