Today I had to do something I had not done before, which is to pay an official to help me with a service, and this is certainly a crime called " Bribery" in many countries, including mine, but which unfortunately has become very frequent and visible lately, and this is what I want to talk about because I have practically had to do it on several occasions to be able to leave the country.

This consists of paying an amount to someone in exchange for some extra service in the public institutions, whether they are policemen, lawyers, doctors or any professional in charge of any public institution, and what happens in my specific case is that in Venezuela there is a significant shortage of gasoline, which generates lines of cars trying to receive gasoline, and in some cases it can take days to achieve it.

In this case we may think that the logical thing to do is to wait all the time to get gas, but the reality is different, and is that we all have something to do besides waiting for gas, and this is where the demand for a faster service begins to be generated because there are other responsibilities to attend that can be more expensive than a bribe for speed, for example the case of a medical accident in which you can lose your life for not having the ability to transport you by car due to lack of gasoline, but there are many other similar examples.

This is something that I have also had to do for other documents that are necessary to be able to leave the country and where the public institutions that generate them are not working, so I am forced to pay someone within the institution to do it, and here we fall back into the same logic, because if my other option is not to have the document I need to live better, then the result is more expensive than having paid an amount of money to a corrupt person.

This is the big problem with countries that have a very large government, because the more documents are needed to do something and the efficiency of the institutions that generate them is low, we will simply have 2 options, which are to pay extra for speed even if this means a bribe or simply not having the expected result in the expected time, and this can sometimes mean things like death.

Needless to say that I don't feel good and I wanted to vent with this article, but also to say something I think about this, since corruption is a bad thing for a country (even if it is something generalized in society, because I have not been and will not be the only one who does it), but it can become the only way to get things done when institutions do not work as they should, and there are times when paying extra for corruption is cheaper than waiting and waiting and waiting and waiting.

The reason I have had to do it these days is so I don't have to do it again because every day I am more sure of my decision to leave the country to one where I don't have to do this kind of thing in order to achieve my results.

Hoy tuve que hacer algo que no había hecho antes, que es pagarle a un funcionario para que me ayude con un servicio, y esto es ciertamente un delito llamado “Cohecho” en muchos países, incluyendo el mío, pero que lamentablemente se ha hecho muy frecuente y visible últimamente, y es de esto que quiero hablar porque prácticamente he tenido que hacerlo en varias ocasiones para poder salir del país.

Esto consiste en pagarle una cantidad a alguien a cambio de algún servicio extra en las instituciones publicar, ya sean policías, abogados, médicos o cualquier profesional que se encargue de alguna institución pública, y lo que ocurre en mi caso específico es que en Venezuela existe una escasez importante de gasolina, lo cual genera filas de carros intentando recibir gasolina, y en algunos casos pueden tardar días en lograrlo.

En este caso podemos pensar que lo lógico es esperar todo el tiempo para poder tener gasolina, pero la realidad es distinta, y es que todos tenemos algo que hacer además de estar esperando por la gasolina, y es aquí donde comienza a generarse la demanda por un servicio más rápido ya que hay otras responsabilidades que atender que pueden ser más caracas que un soborno por la rapidez, por ejemplo el caso de un accidente medico en el cual se puede perder la vida por no tener la capacidad de transportarte en carro por la falta de gasolina, pero hay muchos otros ejemplos parecidos.

Esto es algo que también he tenido que hacer para otros documentos que son necesarios para poder salir del país y donde las instituciones públicas que los generan no están funcionando, por lo que me veo en la obligación de pagarle a alguien dentro de la institución para que lo haga, y aquí volvemos a caer en la misma lógica, ya que si mi otra opción es no tener el documento que necesito para vivir mejor, entonces el resultado es más caro que haber pagado una cantidad de dinero a una persona corrupta.

Este es el gran problemas con los países que tienen un gobierno muy grande, ya que mientras más documentos se necesiten para poder hacer algo y la eficiencia de las instituciones que los generan es baja, simplemente tendremos 2 opciones, que son pagar extra por la rapidez aunque esto signifique un soborno o simplemente no tener el resultado esperado en el tiempo esperado, y esto a veces puede significar cosas como la muerte.

De mas esta decir que no me siento bien y quería desahogarme con este artículo, pero también decir algo que pienso sobre esto, ya que la corrupción es algo malo para un país (aun cuando sea algo generalizado en la sociedad, porque no he sido ni seré el único que lo haga), pero puede llegar a ser la única vía de conseguir las cosas cuando las instituciones no funcionan como deben, y hay veces en que pagar extra por la corrupción es más barato que esperar y esperar y esperar.

La razón por la que lo he tenido que hacer estos días es para no tener que volver a hacerlo porque cada día estoy más seguro de mi decisión de irme del país a uno en el cual no tenga que hacer este tipo de cosas para poder lograr mis resultados.
