What Ozzy Osbourne Taught Me About NFTs

(My new Cryptobat by Ozzy)

I don't care much for $ETH based NFT's. I find it all very cookie-cutter and scammy. If the team is in the club the project does well. If they aren't, it does poorly.

I understand the value of some of the projects like BAYC and I would even argue that they are currently undervalued, but still most projects that come out are just noise. Even if noise is the very statement the space needed to make right now, its still just noise.

However, when in late December I saw that "Cryptobatz by Ozzy Osbourne" was coming out, I dropped everything to go battle the soon to be 100k person Discord for one of 7000 whitelist spots. I could barely read the discord it was going so fast but against all odds I got one.

At 42 years old with 29 years of playing guitar under my belt, I've been an Ozzy fan for as long as I can remember. While I knew Ozzy could give a F**K about NFT's and it wasn't him sending out tweets with the latest NFT meme-slang from his account, I still wanted one. It was the first project I'd seen that I felt connected to and I wanted to rep Ozzy like I did as a teenager wearing a concert-Tee I'd worked and saved for.

When I signed up for the discord though I noticed something disappointing - the people who were getting whitelisted weren't people sharing nostalgic stories about Ozzy. It was the people shouting LFG!!! and WAGMI! and those posting memes and answering everything with the same 5 gifs.

After about 12 hours of trying to get noticed in a sea of thousands of people with my genuine stories about what his music and concerts have meant to me, I changed up my tactics to become the perfect 23-year-old-nft-bro and within an hour I was whitelisted.

Still though I had hope for the project. I listened to the calls and the team were very frank that even though the press releases said otherwise Ozzy didn't really care much about NFT's but him and Sharon were very excited about the community it was forming and moving into new mediums.

They also said Ozzy and Sharon have really been very involved with almost daily contact with their (Sutter Systems) team. Furthermore, Ozzy really was the creative director who had final say on all the art and direction.

So when the reveal happened today and it was loaded with bats with party blowers and vapes sticking out of their mouths with bunny ears and rubber duckies resting on their heads, I was more than a little disappointed.

In fact, I felt immediately disconnected from the whole project.

There was almost no Ozzy in any of the art. It was all $ETH NFT fanboy copy+paste traits from other projects and they honestly weren't even done well.

This team took 50 years of highly successful and potent Ozzy imagery and trashed it in favor of neon blue square reading glasses and clown hair that's been popular for about 8 months and already done to death by literally thousands of projects in that time.

And all I can think looking at it is that it's all about to get washed away soon.

While the next leg down in the crypto sell off started before the reveal, this is what I will remember as the final straw of this phase of the crypto economy.

The point in which you see that the people running it are so stuck in their tiny worlds and it's all so concentrated and ridiculous that they've lost track of what it is they are doing-making projects that connect with and represent people-in favor of memes and having the best bandwagon project that resonates with the same few thousand people over and over again.

Now I realize that it's not NFT's that are going to take this market down. It's clearly central bank policy but we all know that already. What I'm interested in is what actually survives on the other side of this and to me, today was enough to see that the current culture of ETH PFP NFT's is likely to get washed away in this coming flood.

And there's a good chance that Ethereum, as the powerhouse it is today, goes with it.

If the value in this type of NFT project is in the community you gain access to, this just cheapens everything.

Because obviously this isn't the type of community you would pay to be a part of - Nothing to do with Ozzy and actually just another standard crypto children community which has no value.

You always say it so much better than I can. That's exactly it.

What better opportunity for a project to bring people into the crypto NFT fold and show them what the space can bring to them as fans.

A community where people can come relive moments and be collectors and gain access where just being an active part this thing you enjoy creates financial opportunity and teaches what web 3 can be.

If only those who are building out the tech understood the value of culture beyond what they've recently created.

Man, I went from a kid on christmas morning to just bummed out when I saw what they did and the opportunity they wasted.
