Bitcoin Fees Are Taxes Coerced By The Bitcoin Network?

(Edited)

If there's one thing we know about Bitcoiners, is that the majority of them are not pro taxes and currency debasement.

Here you have some Bitcoin upstart, member of the newly created Space Force (Don't get me started), and MIT student. For whatever reason he has become a darling of the #Bitcoin community and has been making the rounds on the Podcast circuit. I thought his ideas relating Bitcoin mining to national defense were interesting, but then he came up with this beauty.

Many Bitcoiners ribbed him for it, and he just kept doubling down.

One thing my grandfather taught me was to always "consider the source". Here we have someone who derives his income from the federal government. He is part of an organization that was recently spun off the Air Force. For better or for worse this organization is a drain on the taxpayer. It makes sense that he should be measured in his approach to talking about his employer, but he leaves little room for doubt as to the lens he views Bitcoin under. To a hammer, everything looks like a nail. And to an unabashed statist, no thing worth doing should be voluntary. If a network requires a fee for use, it must be viewed as a tax.

Fox in the hen house much?

US Hash Force, indeed. This guy thinks he can coopt the US military into the commercially decentralized mining of Bitcoin (Whatever TF that means), and that the average Bitcoiner is supposed to view that favorably. Anyhow, just another pop-tart clout chaser that will fade back into obscurity. I thought he had an interesting viewpoint, but I'm over it. Have fun orange-pilling the military space cadet.

Anyhow, I'm sure many of you have run into this guy on Twitter or on the Podcast circuit. Your thoughts?

Too bad HIVE isn't used as a currency at the level of Bitcoin. So much better!

Lol, I give this guy a couple of days in the limelight, if that, before whatever this narrative is is closed down

Tends to go like that once people start identifying flaws.

I think he might actually be a good dude who's confused. Like you said, it's very difficult to convince someone of the truth when their income depends on believing a lie. Also, if he ends up sending his employers on a wild goose chase thinking they're going to control Bitcoin, I'm okay with it. It will help stave off any hostility from the state, at least temporarily. Honestly I think all we need is a few more years before they realize both that they can't control it and that it's also in their best interests to embrace its adoption amongst the citizenry. El Salvador got a huge jump start on everyone there, and it's going to give them a huge advantage when the superpowers are forced to do the same or get left behind. I think Nigeria might end up being in an even better position because they're coming at it from the bottom up there.

I agree, I think he's just not too humble in his flawed opinions. Part of that is because some Bitcoiners have been gushing over him for being an outspoken 'Space Force' dude.

A user fee is not the same as a tax. In the case of bitcoin, you are paying fees for the use of a service because there is a real cost to processing transactions (or witnessing blocks or whatever). And since those that do so are not running a charity, of course they want to make a profit. Calling those fee a tax is a bit like calling the fee that uber charges a tax.

Exactly, Uber is a good analogy. I thought the same way about the 3% Merchant fee for Visa. Is that a tax?
