Holybread : My suggestion for sustainable game development

First of all I will congratulate the Holybread team (@simplegame and et.al) for taking over this game and making it live on Hive. I am also impressed by the team dedication on reworking the game mechanics to make it more interesting for the players. Think, it might be very easy for team to just raise the Hero level and let it continue for another six months but they decided to fix the game for a sustainable eco system and player experience.

I am somewhat late entrant in the game and played in bit and peices.(I also left the game when there is no news of the original dev team) and come back again when new team took over the game but still I have played this game considerably (Thanks to lockdown and covid -19) and reached under 100 .I am putting my suggestion what I feel implemented and improved in this game.

Changes that need attention.

1. Quest items stats have no correlation with item level and they are too time consuming

First you need to ask a quest,choosing the desired one and afterward collecting them. It is good but they took time to load and the items we get has no correlation with their level and stats.(lower level item can have better stats than higher level item). You get 10 energy every hour so it is 240 energy a day and so it means you really need 4 hours per day to complete the quest if you dot want to use "extra bread or gold".

2. Ranking algorithm need to be fixed.

Ranking Algorithm needs a fix,even if you do not have desired hero level after reaching the rank it is very unlikely that you will drop down in the rank.

Changes that will be really nice.

3.New Hero class like Barbarian and other related future development.


I know they all are working in new features in the game and it will really move the game forward. Players always look for something exciting.

4. Removal of Breadcrumbs

I think this is also a good move. Keeping multiple currency in a single game do not make much sense.

Changes, I do not feel should be implemented.

5.Heroes able to wear a item irrespective of it's Hero level

It looks very lucrative in listening but in short it is going to kill all market opportunities for a starting player. Player at high level will go on producing items on high stats, so a new player will buy a item from an existing old high level player and the item that new player will produce will have no market.

6.Potion not stacking up

I am somewhat in agreement that same type of Hero ability are now not able to stack up. But same type of potion ability will not able to stack up with same type of hero ability does not sound logical because potions are temporary boost up.

7. Gold trading should be allowed between players.

Gold is going to be very important in the game like buying the potions and upgrading the Hero skills. I believe team should find the way that gold can be traded between the players and it can benifit both the development team and player.

8. Hero can be burned for Gold values.

I think only relying on the market for selling the hero is not a good idea. Since Hero inventory capacity is also limited and when hero will be launched then you really need space for heroes. I think converting heroes into gold will be a nice idea so that you are not forced to sell hero cheap in the market for creating space in inventory. I believe a simple formula like k*1.5exp(hero level) can be used to convert hero into gold where k is rarity constant.

Love the article and feedback.
Some of your points have already been addressed in our roadmaps/developer blogs.

Like #1 Quests... we agree they need to be completed redesigned. That is why instead of doing a small update to them. We are working on rolling out Dungeons code.

#2 we have stated we want to move to a pure ELO system and give players insight into their ELO gains/losses per battle.

#5 we don't agree it will work the way you are saying, but we will always monitor the game and make changes as needed.

#6 & #8 this will be discussed.

#7. We don't feel in creating a secondary market for any in-game currency. We feel we have a better solution for creating value for players that has not been talked about. We are not ready to reveal it yet.

To touch more on point #5.
The code is being rewritten. Currently high lvl players can only find high level items. When we roll out the changes High lvl players will be finding low level items as well as high level items.
The base chance of finding items will not be impacting by a Hero's level.

Other things will impact your chance of finding "higher" level items but we have not reveled them yet.

Actually I was just informed that Gold "trading" may come into play when we get into Guild design
