# 862 - Modern Commemoratives Half Dollars - Part 16

avatar

Today we will continue the series "The Modern American Commemorative Half Dollars".

The info below comes mostly from: https://moderncommemoratives.com/

"The United States Modern Commemorative Coin program began in 1982. That year, the US Mint released commemorative half dollar coins to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the birth of George Washington. Since that date, commemorative coins have been issued nearly every year to celebrate famous American people, places, events, and institutions.

Each commemorative coin program is authorized under an Act of Congress. The Act typically specifies the subject to be commemorated, the denomination of coins to be issued, and the maximum authorized mintage for each. Additionally, most commemorative coin programs include surcharges added to the cost of each coin, which will be distributed to specified beneficiary organizations or fund projects that benefit the community."

They were issued in Brilliant Uncirculated and Proof finish.

They will be presented in the order they were minted, but only one of each design.

The sixteenth is the PR70 DCAM 2003-P "First Flight".

"The 2003 First Flight Half Dollar rounded out the offerings related to the First Flight Centennial Commemorative Coin Program, which also included a silver dollar and $10 gold coin."

PCGS graded 1,650 2003-P "First Flight", with 115 as PR70 DCAM. 109,710 2003-P "First Flight" were minted in Philadelphia.

I bought this coin in 2013 for $143.00 and today's price is around $155.00. The issue price was $13.50.

The obverse of the half dollar features Wright Monument located at Kill Devil Hill near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.

The obverse was designed by John Mercanti.

The reverse features an image of the Wright 1903 Flyer making it historic first powered manned flight. Orville Wright is aboard the Flyer with Wilbur on the ground below.

The reverse was designed by Norman E. Nemeth.

It is amazing what the Wright Brothers have accomplished! It was appropriate that they are honored for their contribution to the entire world. Thanks for sharing this commemorative coin.

They minted not only a half dollar, but a silver dollar and a gold $10. The complete set.

Only to be followed by the invention of the 'In Flight Movie' some decades later.

This coin reminds me of the license plates of North Carolina which to this day depict the Wright Brothers and their plane. A cool coin!😎🤗
