Home on the range…..

Afternoon everyone ….

During our stay in Las Vegas for our silvergoldstackers meet up. We paid a visit to a pair of local coin shops. The first one that we stopped at, I would highly recommend. It is called Archangel Coins, they had a very diversified selection of stuff for any style collector or stacker.

They had graded collector coins, raw collector coins, modern semi numismatic coins, silver rounds and bars as well as a few pieces of poured silver. They had a bunch of different options for gold as well including Goldbacks.

I had a few pieces in mind that I was looking for. But unfortunately they didn’t have any in stock at the moment we were there. So I did what I typically do at a local coin shop. I went through the bin of silver rounds and bars looking for some finds.

Almost everything had a price sticker on it. But that price ended up being negotiable, which is the sign of a good coin shop. I ended up buying eleven pieces that day during the visit.

I look for unusual items or items that I know I can flip for a profit. This piece falls in the second category.

It’s a 1973 Patrick Mint one ounce silver bar. It’s called the “Prairie Schooner”. The sticker was $30, but he gave it to me for $27. These are collectible and in searching sold listings on eBay they go for between $42-$57.

The bar is in the original mint case and is in perfect condition. It will shortly be listed for sale.

Here is the bar….

Why wouldn't the shop owner do their own research and list it for a price more in line with what you can sell it for? Is it possible they paid far less than the $27 so it's still profit for them? I'm genuinely curious. The advent of the Internet and EBay have made it really difficult to snag good deals on things at flea markets and stuff like that anymore.

See there’s a catch 22 when you own a brick and mortar store. If you ard selling all your good stuff on eBay or other auction sites why have a store? Plus if you try to get every last penny out of every item you’ll hold onto it way longer. Coin shops need cash flow, in order to keep buying. As a store you have to have stuff that people feel they got a deal on as well. When I did have an LCS years back, he’d buy anything you had of .999 silver for 95% of spot. He’d sell it in the generic bin for $.50 over spot. He never even looked at it other then to verify it was real.

Hmm, interesting. I guess I still don't understand how they stay viable, but it must be working if everyone is doing it.

That's a nice bar. Well designed and from the shine I would guess brand new.

Have you ever come across a bar: Farnam Pet Products before. Picked one up at a jewelry shop awhile back and can't seem to find much about it.

It was most likely made for company as a promotional item or an employee gift. There’s tons of stuff like that around. It’s rare for them to be made by swell known mint though. Usually by the cheapest priced mint they could find.

Is it worth taking the time to list and sell it on ebay for a $15 profit? I guess that is an hour's pay for some people, so if you can do the paperwork/packing/sending in under an hour, you're good. Still—the listing on ebay always seems like such a pain to me. Then again, if you can get that high end in the range you list, $30 seems more of an incentive to do all the work of selling it.

But anyway maybe that's why guys like you can make money on ebay while guys like me don't.

Anyway, good find. Bargaining at coin shops in Japan doesn't seem to be as easy as in the States. At least I've never had any success doing it.

The good and happy thing is that we get to see all these things because we don't have enough money to buy them right now.
