World Coin Wednesday.....Italian Style

(Edited)

Morning everyone....

Today is the revival of yet another one of my tags. That would be #worldcoinwednesday. This is an easy one for anyone. Just pick any coin from any country other then the one you reside in. Tell us a little bit about it and snap some pics. It’s that easy.

We are on our way to Italy today...

This is a coin that has crossed my path several times through the years. I’ve always wanted one, but had never seen one in great condition before. There is a ton of detail in this coin and only the higher grade ones still have it.

The coin is a 1960 Italia 500 Lira coin.

Here are the specs:

Value 500 Lire (500 ITL)
Currency Lira
Composition Silver (.835)
Weight 11 g
Diameter 29.3 mm
Thickness 2 mm

Obverse

Bust of woman in Renaissance dress, representing Italy, surrounded by 19 shields. From lower left the shields are: Genova, Torino, Aosta, Milano, Trento, Venezia, Trieste, Udine, Bologna, Firenze, Ancona, Perugia, Roma, L'Aquila, Napoli, Bari, Potenza, Catanzaro, Sicilia, Cagliari. The last two are hidden behind the bust.
Below the name of the engraver.

Lettering: GIAMPAOLI

Engraver: Pietro

Reverse

Christopher Columbus's ships, the Nina, Pinta and Santa Maria sailing to right. Below the value, with mint mark and name of the author (within sea waves).

Lettering:
REPVBBLICA ITALIANA
VEROI
L. 500
R

Engraver: Guido

There were just over 24 million of these minted. There are not many examples left in high grade.

So here she is.....

Ah, the good old 500 Lire.

The silver was worth more that the 500 Lire nominal worth at some point in Italian inflation history ^^
Maybe thats why only few are left?

I thought this is a nice coin too so I added it to my Silver fleet, I just don't remember where I parked her.

I wonder if they named the female that represents Italy that is depicted in this coin, like we call ours "Lady Liberty". I like it!
Thanka for sharing, bestie! Take care 🥰🌺🤙 and a ton of hugs 🤗🤗🤗

I don’t think they did. I have many books on world coins and they never mention it. Feel better🤗🤗🤗🌹

Love this one 510 — I bought one like it out of the case a couple years ago. Beautiful specie buddy 👍

No doubt Ron. I love the thought process of the designing of the old coins. There is not just a design but it tells a story as well. Thanks for stopping by brother.👍
