When I asked a few people these questions, I got identical replies and almost the same reasoning from everyone. Many people, including me, would prefer to work remotely over a full-time job that needs them to be at their workplace at regular hours.

At the same time, the tough part about working remotely is that there are no breaks and much more is expected of you because you are not in the office but in the comfort of your environment, whether at home or elsewhere. You have no breaks and may have deadlines to meet depending on the type of job and skills required.

When it comes to procrastination, I feel it might be an issue for people who choose to work remotely. They would believe they had unlimited time and would devote it to other things, especially if they are a family person or have many other interests and remote employment. Finally, this does not end well for such a person because they may find it difficult to fulfil deadlines and combine their real-world interests and professional life. Because remote employment combines your personal and professional lives.

Even with all of the disadvantages of remote work that I have discussed, I would always prefer working remotely to working full-time. My rationale is that I value my privacy and dislike being on the road for extended periods of time. I grew up in a city where traffic is widespread, and if one is attempting to get to work, one will most likely arrive late due to the so-called traffic. The aggravation I felt prompted me to explore alternatives, and when I discovered one could work remotely, I realised that was just what I needed.

For me, having to spend most of my time at home is like nirvana. I am someone who would like to make time for my future wife and children, to see them frequently, and even to organise outings together, where we go out as a family or even try out new meals from other restaurants, and all that sort of thing.

untitled.gif
Seee how cute homer simpson his while having time for his kids. Who wouldn't love a father like this...

Because my father wasn't always available to us, I never got to enjoy family gatherings. He was usually busy and travelling, so we only went out as a family when there was a normal family occasion, such as a family member getting married, having a birthday party (which we rarely went to), or celebrating the arrival of a newborn child. This is typically the only time I got to spend with my family, and I never liked it or felt like I enjoyed my childhood. I definitely want my future children to have a unique experience.

I literally had a boring childhood and was raised to be an introvert...

Everyone would probably like to work remotely, but it all comes down to the abilities one possesses and the challenges one can solve. Otherwise, the dream of working remotely would remain fiction and empty words, never to be realised.

A reason why a person chose full-time over working remotely...

While I was asking everyone this question, I discovered that someone preferred to work full-time rather than remotely. The individual stated that she preferred full-time work since she enjoys monotonous tasks. She liked the sense of having to wake up in the morning and know what to do next, of having to dress up to look really great and meet other people.

untitled.gif

In my opinion, she is an extrovert because she enjoys physical interaction with others and receiving compliments on her appearance. All of this is what keeps us sane. This is a good explanation, and I am sure there are others like her who have the same thought or feel the same way.

The fact is that certain remote jobs might be depressing at times since you may not have someone nearby to readily or physically reach out to when there are hurdles to overcome while still meeting a deadline. However, when you work full-time and have your coworkers around you, these issues can be readily tackled as a team and the problem is solved much faster.

Good take. You're lucky to have the choice. As an essential worker, I have to be onsite. My only concern about remote work is outsourcing. Good article.

There are also jobs that are both full-time and remote. I am a senior 3D animator looking to transition to the game development industry. As such, I have a pending job application in a game studio that offers full-time work, plus training and company-issue desktop computers, and a permanent work-from-home arrangement.

I would love this... I would also love the fact of being able to switch between going to work every day and also staying at home.. because sometimes someone might need that routine feel or a change of work environment...

Wow.. Being a 3D animator is cool bro! To be in the game development industry, what did you need to learn?..

I am still applying to become a game artist. But I have been in animation since 1998. I started out as a cartoon animator. Then after five years of doing that, I shifted to 3D animation in 2005. The skills I have as a 3D artist/animator are the same skills one needs to be in game development, but with some changes in the workflow.

Oh, I thought in game development, one would need to learn to program for the functionality of the game. You have been this for a very very very long time... Long before I even know anything like Money existed.

Coding is the game programmers' job. I am on the creative/artistic side of development. Yes, I've been an artist since I was four years old. But, ironically, I took Computer Science in college instead of Fine Arts. So, that's why can thrive in technical environments as well as artistic/creative ones.

There are many conveniences to working remotely, many of which you have highlighted here. And I think that's mostly why people would choose it over full-time jobs.

People like me like our space (especially our workspace) and do not like to travel much. So, dealing with traffic jams, especially if you are in a city that's crowded, is never on my agenda and I would try to avoid it at all cost.

Remote jobs help you worry less about the barriers to working efficiently and effectively delivering services or products. However, there are caveats to working remotely.

The biggest issue with working remotely is being self-motivated. Working full-time somehow provides one with the ginger needed to get up and grind. With full-time, you have to dress up, get breakfast (or not), gather things you need for the day together, and then set out to meet the call time. They are not all fun to do, but it's more like a routine that automatically sets one into the mood for work.

With the issue of self-motivation, remote work is definitely the way to go for me. Just like you, being at home is "it" for me. And also, I would like to be there often for my family. There may be "see finish" once in a while, but it really does not matter and shouldn't happen much if one can hold his family together.

Some people enjoy the thrill of setting out every day into familiar territory, knowing exactly what tasks they must complete. But for me, I prefer the advantages to working remotely, like having to spend less just by working at home and saving all that transport fare.

It's remote work for me.

Most obviously, we have the same likes...

People like me like our space (especially our workspace)

You mean people like "us" like our workspace. For me, I don't like to travel a lot but at the time, I love visiting new places and trying different meals. That is always my main purpose of trying different places..

The biggest issue with working remotely is being self-motivated

That's the main point... The only way I get myself motivated is by eating and also sharing my challenge with friends. Glad there are places like StackOverflow, where questions can be asked to other developers.

Foodie, you are truly a foodie, to the extent eating gives you motivation, that's really cool sha. And it's true, asking others in the same field as you questions is something that will be great help.

You're absolutely right, we even need it to help our brains function very well. I agree with you on that, there is nothing that can give you the motivation that good food gives πŸ₯°.

Well I love remote jobs but I also love traveling because it helps widens my horizon and it facilitates my learning experience and process. But as a remote worker I get to choose a convenient time to travel, so I think that is what makes it a lot fun.

Indeed working alone, one needs self motivation, because there are days when it seems like it's too hard to go on but if one has someone around like as a full-time worker with colleagues, it would be a lot easier.

0

Exactly my point. I like to be in control of my travels. I do not like them to be too frequent (they stress me), so I think remote jobs will help reduce them.

I do not dispute the advantages to full-time job, especially in regards to self-motivation. I just feel remote jobs endear themselves to me more as they seem to provide the control I seek.

I do agree with your points but I as well think "remote" jobs are most times not so remote.

I think it's another 9-5 with a little package of free will.

A remote worker wants to ensure all tasks are complete, so he begins early in the morning, takes a break, probably see a movie or play some video games and then get back to work again.

Most especially the tech guys or folks who're into coding, we can practically say they work more than just the duration of 9-5.

I think some remote work as you have stated are depressing. You're alone in your room or workspace with plenty of thoughts and trying to manage to complete the task of the day. THAT can be depressing for someone who doesn't enjoy the company of himself.

More reason I would prefer a blend of the two.

I'm hoping to work remotely from Thursday to Saturday and then Monday to Wednesday get to visit the office, feel the presence of people, enjoy the atmosphere...

I believe a work plan like that can be created. I feel it's the best balance. To me, this is what I I'll enjoy most.

@starstrings01 thanks for sharing this wonderful piece, I will also create a post around this to share the observable differences between a 9-5 and a remote worker. Thanks for the inspiration πŸš€

brother you get the whole point.. tech guys actually work more than 9 to 5 because they may not even finish the day's task within that time range and have to go extra hours all night to get the project done.

having a blend of going to work every day and staying home is just it actually. but I would love it if my house is not far from work since I don't like staying long hours on the road.

(Edited)

This is why I said working a remote job is a lot harder because you don't have a time to resume and a time to close, every time is a work time for a remote worker.

Although some people might be oblivious of the fact that remote jobs requires more time, they think is easier, I just laugh when I see these set of people, hehehe.

But what if you have no traffic barriers, would you still prefer to work from home?

0

Yeah for remote, every time is work hour.. but it is also interesting if the job you are doing remotely is something you are passionate about so it would not really feel like work, and burn out would not be that much.

Exactly, we only complain when we don't really have passion for what we do but for people like you and @olujay that have passion for what they do, they start asking for more hours added to the 24 hours that we already have, lolz.

See what I'm talking about, that's the spirit of a genuine remote worker. I'm really proud or should I Say happy for you 😊, God will help us to learn to manage the 24 hours πŸ₯°πŸ€².

That's why remote jobs are better pick for me because I get to start working at any time and close at any time, it's not really because I wanted limited time to work that was why I choose remote jobs, it's because I want to get things done at anytime, especially, early.

Working with a company can reduce our performances because, they either wants us to close early or late which might not be so good but when you work on your own, you can easily continue until you are tired or until you have completed the job.

But like you have said, it can be boring most times, but I would love a walk at this point and maybe get some rest.

Well I'm introvert for sure but I'm between the best of two world, a restaurant was always my dream and I did it needed to be close to ppl more than ever in my entire life but with painting and makeup I can be a more reserve person, can be at home in peace. So, sometimes, mostly i choose peace but in time to time need to interact outside

I don't know, why is it that most artists love their space? It's very common among them and I'm even almost generalizing it but I'm sure there will be a unique one out of them.

Well, I think the restaurant will help you to relate well with the world and since you love it, that means it's one of the ways out for you being an introvert, it can help you balance it.

I am a heavy procrastinator, and I still want to work a remote job. The idea of having to go out to an office, work a predetermined amount of time and all sounds limiting to me.

I want to work from my home when I want to, and relax when I want to. The liberty to work and rest at the comfort of my home is worth more than whatever a full-time job has to offer.

There’s also the added advantage that with a remote job, I can work several part-time jobs as side hustles. A full-time job will most likely eat up all your time and you’ll barely have enough for yourself, talk less family, hobbies, or another job.

Exactly why I don't want to work full time. But remote makes you open to many opportunities. In fact unlimited Opportunities.

Considering how much traffic has dealt with me during my office jobs here in Lagos, I would have gently preferred a remote job but on a second thought πŸ’πŸ’, I am an extrovert and so I love socializing with my fellow workers, and just like you stated, if I should encounter any hurdles in my task, it will be sorted out almost immediately unlike when I am alone in the house working.

Honestly, I will prefer both if possible just like the way some bank treats their staff since COVID-19. Using my elder brother as an example, he works remotely on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays and
Only visit the office twice a week. If given this opportunity I will prefer it otherwise I will choose a remote job but have to battle family distractions and the rest while creating room for my social activities.

Wow, it's really nice to see such an opportunity to work both ways. For a state like Lagos it would be very possible because of the trafficjs and all that and that's really so cool.

Working with a team is always better than working alone but not all the time too.

I am at home almost everyday and I am running different small hive projects underneath. These makes me see myself as a remote worker even though I don't get paid for it but yet, I do it for the passion in it and sense of responsibility it gives.

You have clearly made some important points to support why people can choose either of them and just like you have said, working remotely has more challenges in the actual scene but it works well for those who love their own space. For me, I will always prefer working remotely, because I love learning new things possibly everyday and working full-time will make that somehow impossible.

When working full-time, you only tend to learn how to improve on your aspect of specialization, then only few times you learn something outside your field and that's one reason why I don't like full-time jobs. Working full-time also controls my time and I'm someone that always likes taking the things of God first, so what can I do when my work clashes with the time to meet with others for fellowship, I guess I will miss attending then. This is another reason why I will choose working remotely over working full-time.

Working remotely trains my mind to be at alert all the time, it gives me a sense of responsibility for myself and others, a urge to want to be better, the confidence to be true to who I am and avoid pretence and all that. I would also prefer working remotely because I know it's not easy but it will surely make me stronger.

This was a really beautiful write up sir, I actually didn't know the actual meaning of remote jobs not until today and I want to thank you for making me update my knowledge, hehehe.

Seriously, you didn't know the meaning of remote jobs.. I am glad my article came through.

See ehn, full time jobs is just like clustering your hands only in one thing and not having them spread out. One may become good at specialisation but yet na risk when one you are specialized at is not more of need.

Yes I didn't, but I do now, thanks to you.

Exactly!! That's just it, the thing is being specialized in some thing means you can easily be replaced because there are others who are still specialized in that area too and might even be better than you πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚.

Honestly, I once had the side of remote work absolutely but after considering the two sides like you graciously put out here, I'd love a combo of the two - hybrid. But maybe much less full-time.

One thing to note is both full-time and remote has its good and otherwise - not necessarily bad though. And also not all jobs can be made remote, for example, a waitress. Except the whole food outlet is completely autonomous! πŸ˜„

For me too, even though I only get to witness the kind of traffic that exists in your state once in a while, I would not want to witness that at all. I always get to my destination with a banging headache anytime I travel down there. I can't afford to add that to work stress at all.

Bro, having both is actually nice. But at my present location and state, a fully remote work would be great. unless the company would love me to come over to their country (definitely not in Nigeria) and work there then, I don't mind having it mixed with remote and full time.

I prefer remote jobs to full-time.

I like the points you gave bro. We have the same view.

People that prefer full-time probably do not mind monotonous tasks. For me, going through the same routine over and still facing issues regarding transportation and extra expenses isn’t enticing.

I’d rather stick with a remote job since it even sits well with my personality: I do not like to travel

I used to think working remotely wasn’t a thing as we experienced covid but to my surprise it is not a new thing . For me , I feel I’ll opt for working remotely because it affords less commuting time. It also creates space for more autonomy ,greater flexibility and better work–life balance.
