CRV Diary 10 New Year Recycling Like Rabbits

(Edited)

I've made it all the way to 10! That’s right, this is the 10th recycling diary. Does anybody else recycle like I do? It’s almost like getting paid to exercise. Show me your receipt. Let’s see your score. I especially want to see what you come up with if you’re in another state.

Let's jump in!

Let's get dirty!

Recycling GO!

This is the back of my car with the recycling bins and treasures still in it. Some people have their vehicles packed to the rim. I try to imagine where they get it all or how long it takes to collect it.

After I park, I chose my favorite retired trash barrel. I try to get the least damaged and anything that's not supposed to have wheels. The missing wheels and the damaged (missing portions of plastic) barrels weigh less than the original weight written on the sides. Think about it. They get the barrel new or almost new and they take it's weight, write it on the side and establish the new barrel's tare. This is the amount taken away from the weigh-in after we put our recyclables in it. As the barrel gets used pieces fall of or it gets worn down. This lessens the original weight taken when it arrived at the facility and affects my final weigh-in. Probably not too much, but if I have a choice and it's easy to chose, i'll take the barrel that is in the best condition. We can see the tare weight written on the sides, in yellow in the image bellow.

Look, this lady is formulating here strategies now. She not dancing. She has limp possibly from a recycled hip.
"Wait, cans are $1.75?" Does it say that on my receipt?

Look, glass is only 0.11!
I hate collecting glass. I hate the sound, weight, fragility, and the price.
I only take glass when I have my own to recycle or if my regular pile of cans and plastic start getting high enough to make a run.

Before

Glass, I hate it. Stupid noise, stupid payout, but it's there. I'll take it anyway. Topo Chico mineral water in the glass bottle is good, one of the best.

Plastic looks like a lot.
I love sparkling mineral water.
Can you tell?

Aluminum looks small, but that's because I stomped on most of it.
As I collect cans, I smash it down to make more room in my various bins.

After
Stop at this image and try to guess how much I'll collect.

I'm done, but before we see my score/total redemption value, let's look at some other stuff.

Glam/Random Stuff

The forklift was busy today. Looks fun to drive and stab stuff.

I thought the forklift was going to punish me for not knowing that the large water bottles don't have a CA redemption value.

This image below shows the colored/unwanted glass. I hate when they dump a bunch of glass into it while I'm around. That smashing glass noise makes me want to ravage something or "get Karen" on anything that moves.

Someone actually dropped off a score board. I wonder if they get scrap money for that. We usually need to separate the various types of metals from complicated items. Maybe they took it for free and then load it up on a different scrap truck.

The REAL Score

I had a can of coconut water. It was a can similar to a soup can. Just one was worth 0.20. I had tossed it in with the aluminum cans thinking it was the same.

The weight attendant removed it held it to the side and then waited by itself and called out, "metal." I learned a valuable lesson. Those cans are worthy of my time/management. On the receipt it's marked "#2 HDPE Large." I have more of these. The next run will be interesting.

$15.27 was my take and I think that's good enough for some tacos or a bowl of phở. Not bad for just walking around and some mild exercise.

Thanks for reading and supporting.

Dang, I wish we had a recycling center like that near us in New Hampshire (okay, there might be one, but I've never bothered to look). Your trip reminds me of our local dump though, complete with threatening fork lifts (usually looking askance at people if they put metal in the household trash). Nice haul, @steemseph!

Yeah, maybe you do have a recycling/rebate/redemption center. If you already have a bunch of these items at home, it’s like free money. The hardest part is organizing it.

I know what you mean it’s intimidating at first. I think they’ve warmed up to me a little bit. The cashier is really cute and most of the time she gives me a big smile. I think the attendant is cool with me, but I also think they mostly don’t even care.

The worst interaction I ever had was my own fault. I was trying to accommodate the attendant by sliding the trashcan closer to him. As the trashcan reached the end of its slide it fell over. It almost looked like I was tossing it at him in a disrespectful manner. That’s something I would never do to anybody in a service capacity. I apologized with every apologetic Spanish and English word I could think of. I quickly jumped at it, showed concern, and tried to correct the spill. At first, his face was like, WTF!!! I think my big nose and hairy face help the situation, and he realized I wasn’t the typical local knucklehead. (😇 he probably thought it looked like Jesus.) I think my actions also remedy the situation. They didn’t stick me in the trash compactor. 😊

That's amazing you get paid to recycle. It's very much like Thailand where every local area has its own centre where people take cardboard, plastic, metal, tins and glass to sell. I don't think it's for a lot of money but people are always going through the bins.

In the UK, each house has multiple bins and it's been compulsory to sort your trash for trash for years.

I do wonder if it is so environmentally friendly after driving there by car. Many times these comparisons are too complex to work out.

Great post and really interesting. Thank you :-)

I have contemplated the same thing. I work in a few places where people drive up and searching for recyclables. One of the guys has an electric vehicle, gets out, and walks around with a bag. I would imagine he has a route with various other locations before he arrives.

Another guy has a small truck and dumpster dives. He pulls out items that I don’t mess with. I think he’s going after metal scrap and not so much CRV items.

Fortunately, for me, the recycling center is about 2 miles away. I only collect recycling from outdoor exercise locations or work locations. I only collect when it’s convenient. I have another advantage, but I won’t reveal that until the next post. Look for the next CRV diary featuring a summary of diaries 1 through 10. 😊

Thanks for following.
