Throwing wood on the fire

avatar

There was just far too much wood and rubbish with more on the way, so we succumbed and ordered a rubbish skip (container) and now I have to fill it. I have been amazed at just how much material has been jam-packed into small areas and I am not even sure if this container is going to be enough to take it all. We are only putting the wood scrap in there though as the price for disposal goes up heavily when it is mixed waste. This wood has been out in the rain so can't be used for much now, but I will keep some of what is to come.

I began this after work and figured that I need to take every opportunity I get to use my fitness watch and started a "general" workout. The watch gives an update every 10 minutes and I found that after each round, I had the idea of "what's another ten minutes" when perhaps I might have quit a little earlier, since I knew I wouldn't get it done tonight. I don't know how accurate the calories burned are, but when I have manually tested the heart rate (counting with finger on pulse), it has been pretty close. 103 average is a nice low-grade rate that is at the bottom end of the fat burning range. I need to work at this range for about another gazillion hours to get to where I should be, about 10 kilos down.

Screenshot_20200707_204054.jpg

I am not actually that fat, but I am short and rather solid, with shoulders almost as wide as I am tall - Kind of like a wombat - though my nose isn't quite as hairy. Ideally, I would love to be around 72-74 kilos, but I am currently sitting up at 85ish, where I have been for far too long. Part of this is due to the medication I am on as well as having hypothyroidism, but I don't really want to use that as an excuse as I think people use "health issues" far too often to explain their weight. There aren't many diseases that warrant people being 150+kg - other than "lifestyle disease".

Of course, we each have our own life to live and make our own choices, but when healthcare spending is always a political discussion point, we also have to consider our role in the statistics. The amount of disease associated with obesity is vast and is likely far more expensive socially than something like smoking, but doesn't raise the same kinds of taxes but has far ranging implications.

I was also thinking about this from a resource consumption perspective and don't know what the average person would need to eat in order to put on a kilo of fat, but assume that the food weight consumed is far greater than the kilo itself and that all has to be produced and transported around the world also. If you imagine that if every person on earth put on 1 kg (about 2.2 pounds), that would be 7 billion kilos.

image.png

I don't know how accurate this is, but that would then require an additional 1000 calories each person or 7,000,000,000,000 (7 trillion) more calories consumed on average per day. That would also go in reverse then, where if (on average) everyone lost 1 kg a week, 49 trillion calories less would be consumed. Many of us could probably afford to lose a few pounds, some could do with putting some on. Don't quote me on these numbers or look at the weight issue in isolation, this is the same with anything - small numbers add up and therein lays our consumer advantage.

The way we consume is what drives economy and it is us who decide which companies get support through the purchases we make. If a company has no customers it fails and that is the same for an entire industry made up of thousands of companies. Small changes in a different direction by the majority of consumers adds up to a mountain of energy moving away from where it once was, to power where it is now headed. What that target is could be anything, but once that mass is heading there to support it, it grows, it evolves, it innovates and it becomes powerful.

One day it could be an economy that we own, but just because we can't skip straight to that point now, doesn't mean we can't start moving in the direction. A billion people buying a dollar's worth of bitcoin doesn't do much, but when we do it daily, it triples the current capitalization in less than a year and, there is then a billion holders of some Bitcoin. In much of the world, a dollar doesn't buy a coffee - in some places, an entire week of dollars won't buy a coffee.

Decisions, decisions - the world is hinged upon them and the more we believe the lie that we as individuals don't matter, the harder it is to understand that it is us in the group that controls all else. Every company, every government, every ideal - is consumer driven.

It doesn't take grand acts by individuals to change the world, it takes small steps by many.

Part of this, you pointed out in your response to my earlier comment. I remember seeing a video of you dancing and I don't remember seeing you that fat. Although it was a long time ago. I think, for example, that a genetic part influences our metabolism. Of course, lifestyle and diet are key to being well inside and out. In Venezuela, for example, in recent years, people have been eating more carbohydrates because that's what the government gives away in bags and because protein is very expensive; however, most of the population is thin, but malnourished. In other words, skinny, but sick. I think the ideal is to maintain a balance in what your mouth, your brain and your soul consumes. Greetings, @tarazkp

This is how my head works, very basic. I take a thought and see where it leads for a while - then write.

in recent years, people have been eating more carbohydrates because that's what the government gives away in bags and because protein is very expensive; however, most of the population is thin, but malnourished.

Carbs alone are bad as there is nothing in them - carbs in combination with proteins and fats are terrible - proteins and fats with a tiny amount of carbs is good. Metabolism and genetics play a role of course, but I don't know many diseases that would make half a country obese :)

I think the ideal is to maintain a balance in what your mouth, your brain and your soul consumes.

We are what we eat!

I always hear 3500cal for 1lb or 7000cal for 1kg. But the factor is 2.2 which means it's quite off one way or the other.
On my app it says how much fatter I am than the rest of the world. Slowly increasing that number, but let's just say it's another average as most people are probably under weight or ideal weight.

Yeah, I am not sure and there are other factors in play, so the numbers don't matter much.

My BMI says I am obese and it was the same when I weighed 15 kilos less.

I am just "big boned" :D

I don't care much for weight, but I feel bad and know I need to do something, even though I probably look about average. I can't imagine how uncomfortable really big people must be, but maybe because rot is incremental they get used to it.

I feel about the same. At a certain point, it must just get uncomfortable carrying all that weight around, and then when health problems develop. Best lose it before that starts.

For most people I know it clearly results from overeating, that's my case, too. I'm fairly active, but I think attacking it from both ends is always best.

But unless people change eating habits and lifestyle, there is little hope. It's always been fairly obvious to me about which foods are bad or whats a large amount, but there are some surprises.

Yep, it takes a couple of habit changes.

I have to get going on it, I am getting too old and once the rot sets in, there is little chance of repair.

In the motorcycle world it is 9 lbs (4.5kg) equals one Horsepower of total performance. If you strip 9 lbs off your motorcycle you get 1 hp back.

Which means I am around 4 hp overweight.

You are absolutely correct in that it takes millions and billions of small, dedicated steps or ideals, but real change can come with enough little steps.

That is an interesting way to look at weight - I wonder if you were a GP racer, how much it would cost in time and wins to be a few pounds over weight - and then what that would cost in sponsorship.

As a consumer, you choose between thousands of options, constantly, each day; and your preferences are accurately passed along to producers, who adapt in response.
As a voter, you choose between a small handful of pre-screened applicants, once every few years and your preferences are irrelevant.

I don't mean changing government through voting, I mean through consumption. Change the choices made in where money flows, government changes too. The irrelevancy of voting is because of where the value is held.

Do you think if the majority of people had their wealth in bitcoin/etc, the governments would remain unchanged?

I don't see government surviving as an entity, if even 25% of people had >50% of their wealth in crypto.
It tries to pass itself off as inevitable, but it's a house of cards.

I agree. This is what I mean by the way we consume in order to change government. Consume crypto, things change as it undermines the power mechanisms they use to control - plus, it generally makes people far more aware of what it means to own and take responsibility - plus, the mobility of wealth changes the ability to move regions and governments will try to undercut each other, to attract the most "free wealth" - Government structure is a rickety old ship.

In late 2013, while working, I'd have the blockchain.info transaction tracker going on my screen in the background. Those little green transaction IDs (guessing as they hit the mempool) scrolling and scrolling all day. I think the largest amount I saw live was around $8 million. A friend asked me what I was watching, and I explained I was watching the governments of the world lose their iron grip on the throat of humanity.

Health issues is definitely valid. I have known a couple of people who probably exercised and ate healthier than most "acceptable" people but no matter what they did their dumbarse bodies simply refused to drop the weight or change shape (and in some cases would desperately cling to every single morsel of fat they might consider eating) because something was out of whack. I think there's medication you can get to correct those things but that's assuming you can get anyone to believe that you're not just a lazy fat person trying to find a "quick fix" because you'd rather not get off your fat lazy arse and exercise.

That was them and I don't know about other people, some of it is probably that insidious lifestyle disease XD

I'm not sure if these things can work out bone density either. Knew a guy in student accommodation at uni whose skeleton you could probably bludgeon whales with, was trim and taut and didn't look like there was a shred of fat anywhere (there probably was but we didn't have these toys in those days XD) but according to all these know-it-all statistics he was very much morbidly obese.

Aww but it's much easier if it's a grand act of an individual because then it doesn't require me personally to have to make the effort to change things XD

Glad the fitness watch is motivating you to move that little bit more :)

I know people with similar issues - but even they aren't 150kg either - When I first arrived in Finland I was surprised at how few really fat people there were, nearly everyone was "normal". That was 17 years ago and it is a very different story now, with obesity rapidly climbing and the morbidly obese not a tiny, tiny fraction anymore.

I had a fat test done once at the gym - I was 68kg at the time and the report said that based on BMI, I should lose 11 kg :D - My fat percentage was around 10% < those were the days...

Aww but it's much easier if it's a grand act of an individual because then it doesn't require me personally to have to make the effort to change things

Totally! I am waiting for the person to invent clean energy and give it away for free :)

That is the amount of ENGAGE you have - you need 1001 to distribute using the > !ENGAGE 10 kind of thing :)

The token is a bit of fun for people to get and there is a little value behind it as @abh12345 follows with a vote and there is occasionally some market buys too. Just a little reward for people who comment well.

The lifestyle disease. So true. I have been waiting for the cool statistics picture since you bought your watch. Finally. Super cool!

I think that following a diet and then returning to a bad healthstyle is defeating the purpose. The change has to be done in the philosophy of life. I guess that is why diets fail : people return to old habits expecting new results.

If you keep working out like this you will be way to thin to make this kind of work anymore hahah.

I was reading the numbers with so many 0000. Can you imagine this tiny blue ball called Earth holding these fat people? I wonder how come we don't get dropped in the vast universe lol. Heavy ants.

I have better statistics, but I am not sure if anyone wants to see how little I do :P

I guess that is why diets fail : people return to old habits expecting new results

It is why everything fails. People "get out of bad relationships" only to find themselves in the same spot again - and think it is the other person.

If you keep working out like this you will be way to thin to make this kind of work anymore hahah.

The only other peerson to do it is my wife, so I have to get skinnier than her, but that would mean cutting off my legs and an arm - so, kind of defeats the purpose. :D

I think this is what is causing climate change, people slowing down the rotation of the earth by being too fat ;)

abundance of food and driving cars, can be two of the main reasons why the lifestyle diseases exist.
To beat the diseases, we have to change the way we live or else they easily catch up to us as we get older.
I try to get around with my bike and I have started fasting. they have been very helpful for me to keep my body weight under control. :)

once upon a time, back in caveman days - we didn't store food for very long, and it wasn't available 24/7 from a shop. We were probably constantly intermittent fasting.

I try to get around with my bike and I have started fasting.

lol, I read and answer sentence by sentence and didn't get this far. How has it been?

Been life saving man! Maintaining weight is not that big of a problem anymore for me. :)
It all started after I read an eyeopening article about how our 3 meal diet is slowly bringing the diabetes to us. I'll leave the link below in case you want to check it out. :)

A long time ago I read a book called "Life without bread" (low carb - high fat/ protein) and it goes into the way energy works and a million other things. It changed my thinking, but I still struggle with a sweet tooth - where all of my teeth are sweet.

Will check the link :)

Everyday i get a little insight into how powerful the crypto world can be. Up until now I didn't even think it was possible for crypto to have a say or any influence whatsoever on the government. I understand that it will probably take time and a lot of collective effort but I believe in the possibility now.

I love the mathematical logic to back up a seemingly un-equation-able metric. ((not really a word but hey whatever)) When used creatively and in a lateral thinking manner the strangest ideas become possible. Sustainability, health, establishing and solidifying new financial systems. This is why I love formulas based on numbers, incrementals powered up to exponentials, and out of the box thinking in general.

The way we consume is what drives economy and it is us who decide which companies get support through the purchases we make.

This is absolutely 100% true of course BUT only if people allow it to be. The key words are as long as it is 'us who decide' far too many people defer any choice to media, ad execs, the Kardashians ((I feel dirty just writing the name...)) and the Jones's who live next door.

The greatest myth people ever bought in to is that one person has no real power, we all know that 1+1 = 2 and 2 + 2 = 4, surely the leap is not do great, right?

But hey what do I know, I'm just a wordy Brit? And as for you... You look like a wombat!

Take good care Taraz. This post and many more like it going forward has the very real potential to change the world one idea at a time, or as the Military strategists would call it...

Hearts and minds!

Sometimes just reducing intake is the key and keep exercising if you were already. It's hard at the beginning but you get used to it. Also I try to skip restaurants the most I can.

It is just my eating choices and while I say I am fat, I am far from it - just not where I would like to be or where I feel good. Too "uncomfortable" for my liking.
