DAOs: The Future Of Work

avatar

Technology has, historically, served to replace human labor.

Throughout the last few hundred years, we saw the practice of manual labor diminish as a percentage of the whole. Industries that were exclusively labor, such as agriculture, converted to high tech operations. This allowed for greater production with a significantly lower percentage of the population involved.

With each technological age, what machines could do better than humans only increases. Jobs such as running a switchboard or elevator disappeared. So did those who were copied documents on a typewriter or answered phones. Automation freed people up for other jobs.

Today, the concern is that, since technology is getting so advanced, a lot more jobs will be eliminated over the next decade. This is leading many to question what people will do. While history shows us that technology can generate more jobs over time, there is no guarantee this will hold course. Also, there is usually a time lag whereby jobs are lost before they are created. A mismatch of skillsets is also a problem when the technology advances so rapidly.

While many fret about this, we are seeing the foundation for the next 100 years being laid. Much was made of the Decentralized Autonomous Organization (DAO) and its future as a business structure. This is going to be one of the things that radically changes society.

However, before we reach that point, we are going to see digital organisms start to spread. The difference between the two is the fact that DAOs are fully autonomous. It is going to take a few decades before we reach that point with automation. Even though it is moving quickly, there are still a lot of jobs done by humans. In 2040 or 2050, that will not be the case.

Cryptocurrency and all of its tentacles is forging new opportunities. We are looking at a future where lifestyle determines work as opposed to the other way around. The fact that businesses in the future will be tokenized communities shows how radical a transformation that is taking place.

Presently, we are watching the infrastructure being laid that will serve as the foundation for this new experience down the road. Mark Cuban wrote a blog post discussing DeFi and how it was going to eliminate the banking system. This is a simple concept based upon the fact that DeFi is much less costly to operate as well as to build upon. This alone is going to attract the greatest financial minds as opposed to the more costly, slower present financial system.

What is tremendous about DeFi is that anyone can participate. At the same time, anyone who does participate can be involved in the "ownership" of the project. The ability to be involved in governance means that people are no longer passive community members. Those who utilize the service by bringing their crypto to the table are able to get a piece of the action. There are no minimums meaning inclusion is almost total which enables platforms to lock up huge amounts of capital. While it is concentrated in a couple different areas at the moment, that will not likely be the case down the road. We will see DeFi projects tied to each community that forms. Essentially, it is making a community a financial system.

In such an arena, there are always tasks to be done. Whatever the community needs, it is up to the members to provide it. This is where incentives enter the picture. Those with the skills that are required, whatever they might be, are able to take on those tasks for rewards. It is a voluntary system which requires no employment contract, HR department, or bosses. In short, everyone is able to participate in whatever role he or she decides.

Of course, one is not relegated to just one community. We all utilize different businesses throughout the week. Take this same concept and apply it to DAOs or community-based digital organisms. Perhaps one wants to watch a streaming movie. If that was a community that ran the service, one could simply be a passive viewer or perhaps an active creator. Something like that would require people with technical skills to run the network, individuals with hard drive space for storage, and those to curate and review what is posted. One with a passion for films could make this almost a full time profession is that is desired.

Under the present digital system, most people are users. This puts then on a different side of the table from the monetary situation. Ultimately, this creates an adverse relationship between the users and those who are involved with the monetization of the platform. It is a situation that repeated itself hundreds of times throughout the last decade.

With digital organisms, we see this change completely. The monetization of the platform is established from the start. Since the users are those who are involved in that aspect of the enterprise, they are no longer the product. The service being provided is what is crucial. Also, each person involved is responsible for the brand that is being built. This is a point few are grasping onto at this moment.

Since the community is voluntary, it will reflect the values of those members. Over time, those who are in disagreement will end up moving on. Again, this is a voluntary system so if one does not like what is going on, leave. There is nothing keeping anyone on a particular platform.

Of course, this is going to require people to change what they think. They are not accustomed to taking "ownership" for their decisions or actions. Most of us were reared in an environment where blame is the main trait. It is easy to complain about something since it was the fault of Mary in accounting. This is not the case with digital organisms. If we each have a stake, then our monetary future is aligned with the others in the community. It is up to us to help the process forward.

We will also see a change in the tolerance of others. Those who are not committed to the community will find it very difficult. Rewards will not come their way and they will be basically shunned. Anyone who approaches it simply as an extractor will be treated like a leper. Life will be very difficult. We have a couple hundred years of evidence how destructive extractors can be in an economic setting and it is likely the tolerance for such people (or entities) is going to dwindle very quickly.

Digital organisms are already forming. We see a lot of economic activity being generated. Over the next decade, this will grow massively. It is probable that this arena ends up overtaking the present system within a decade or so. It is simply too powerful. This is also something that aligns with technology and the goal of having things spread out. In short, it is a new ownership model that fits the progression of humanity much better than something that was created in the 1800s.

Right now it is hard for most to see. However, this is no different than the Internet in the early 1990s. Few saw the potential that was being established at that time. Personally, this seems like it will be hundreds times more impactful that the Internet, which changed the course of humanity significantly.

Work as we know it is going to die off. As automation takes of larger portions of society, DAOs will emerge. In the meantime, the digital organisms we see unfolding before our eyes are going to provide individuals with plenty of opportunities. This is going to be where people find their meaning in the future. It is going to allow those to basically monetize their interests be aligning themselves with others who share the same desires and values.

And that is where time and effort will be dedicated.

Technology is Indeed a blessing to mankind, it does more anything could imagine and I believe in years to come it's will do more than this, that we are seeing

Technology always allowed humanity to move forward. It is not a straightline or without its downside but, the overall, is improvement.

Decentralized autonomous organisation, although I don't fully understand the concept, but can I say one of its prospect is creating small multi businesses where people can co-own an organisation rather than to just be a foreign member?

Think of a company like Amazon or Alibaba being fully end to end automation. That means from order to delivery, it is all done without humans in the process.

Another is to look at the Hive Develop Fund. Those monies are distributed autonomously based upon the voting of the community. Any change in voting is adjusted.

So from proposal to funding is done without people.

Wow well that seems rather explanatory, I believe this system thriving in full massive scale is bound to change the world exponentially.

It will be evolutionary in terms of the progress i.e. Amazon automation more of its operation, but when it reaches critical mass, it will be really big.

I think we will look back in 10 years at today and things will appear archaic.

For a fact work will no longer determine our lifestyles

Automation may seem like a bad thing now, with time we will appreciate it's existence

Defi is gradually changing the way we commit our money, time, and resources

The same thing that happened with the advent of the internet is what we will be witnessing with defi

Those who want to be a part of the process will grow and progress

While those who come around as extractors will be shunned as you said

It is left for each person to decide where he stands

For the world is moving at a very fast pace, and getting left behind should not be in our dictionary

That which is automated is appreciated already. Look at the decline in defects with automobiles as compared to 40 years ago. And look at the increase in quality.

Much of that was due to automation. Sucked for the workers in those plants of course but for the end user, it is a benefit.

Same thing with switchboard communications. Things happened a lot faster when people were removed from that job.

I agree

Automation has really improved a lot of devices that we use daily

And it does benefit then end users, and takes jobs from the workers

Looking at the pace things are happening so fast, a lot of persons need to step up their skill, if they do not want to be left behind

The challenge is what skills does one acquire. Entire industries can be obliterated in a manner of a decade.

What is going to be around in 10-20 years that one should focus upon? That is a tough question.

I imagine skills for the sake of generating an income are just about obsolete in regard to the masses.

If humanity is entering its retirement phase won't we all just be sitting around playing pinochle?

Considering other discussions we've had, based on ideas you've floated, it seems people without a useful skill set will likely end up being data generators to feed the soon to be all knowing AI warlord that unites all the blockchains under one coin.

When organizations like habitat for humanity and others realize the power of this tech there will be entire communities of seriously dedicated people springing up all over & coming together to ensure everyone has a full stomach and a warm, dry, safe place to sleep.

Basically, think of all the greatest humanitarian efforts from history coming together VOLTRON STYLE and throwing down a BLAZING SWORD grade ass kickin' to poverty and hunger.

Yes, this is true.

If humanity is entering its retirement phase won't we all just be sitting around playing pinochle?

Of course, that would be the case.

it seems people without a useful skill set will likely end up being data generators to feed the soon to be all knowing AI warlord that unites all the blockchains under one coin.

In my programming class, we call this data science. It is where the crowd is flocking to you recently. We want to bring the AI into full swing, and we are trying everything humanly possible

When organizations like habitat for humanity and others realize the power of this tech there will be entire communities of seriously dedicated people springing up all over & coming together to ensure everyone has a full stomach and a warm, dry, safe place to sleep.

Oops, I just said that, and you have confirmed it. Everyone will definitely want to be a part of this. In short, there are already beginning to prepare in anticipation

Basically, think of all the greatest humanitarian efforts from history coming together VOLTRON STYLE and throwing down a BLAZING SWORD grade ass kickin' to poverty and hunger.

Hahaha.....very funny but worth picturing

For a fact, this is really a tough question

But I think someone who finds his inclination will able to be a part of the revolution

Why?

That is because, if we stop following the crowd, and look within us, we will find useful ideas, that will make the world knock on our doorsteps

Imagine being someone who comes with how maximum control can be enforced in all the turmoil that those changes will bring

Control? Yes control is something we all desire because if we feel we are not in control, our brain has a way of breaking sweats here and there

This is just an example

Imagine if another person comes up with a solution in another area that those changes will birth

Whoever that person will be gets that piece of the pie

What we should do is not scamper around looking for the skill to keep abreast with development

But find the gaps that those changes will not be able to fill, and fill it

Boom, we in charge, and in action

I don't even know if what I am saying makes sense at all

I wonder how this is going to impact the creative aspect of cultures. It seems like if you are able to focus on what you want to versus what you have to that it would lead to a kind of renaissance again for us. People following their passions instead of the predefined rolls in society.

I would say that is the result. Freeing up people from what they have to do, the dudgery type jobs, leaves them free to pursue more "creative" endeavors. That could naturally be automated to a degree but human activity provides the personal touch.

So yes I think we could end up on a renaissance type atmosphere where we can explore, pursue, and create.

The peculiar predicament of the present-day self surely came to pass as a consequence of the disappointment of the high expectations of the self as it entered the age of science and technology. Dazzled by the overwhelming credentials of science, the beauty and elegance of the scientific method, the triumph of modern medicine over physical ailments, and the technological transformation of the very world itself, the self finds itself in the end disappointed by the failure of science and technique in those very sectors of life which had been its main source of ordinary satisfaction in past ages....
Work is disappointing. In spite of all the talk about making work more creative and self-fulfilling, most people hate their jobs, and with good reason. Most work in modern technological societies is intolerably dull and repetitive.

That is true although I think we can attribute the part about people hating their jobs to the system we are mired in. While science and technology advanced, our system is still mired in a mindset from a few hundred years ago.

The economy is based upon scarcity, hence we operate from a maximize profit perspective. At the same time, there are many who still espouse the "Protestant' work ethic. After all, if you are not working hard, you are not worthy. Leisure is something we seem to afford to only a small class of people. Everyone else is just lazy.

Amazing write up as always sir. Reblogging for the https://coin-logic.com community. We are looking at things like daostack.io to get started in the DAO world that allows no coders to participate and build a DAO. We are also building a DAOish crowdfunding functionality into our new smart contract site that can act as a DAO in a way where the contributors have to vote on the release of funds.

All in all, you are correct in the fact that this is the direction the world is going and we need to either get aboard the train or it’s going to leave without us.

It will be a progression. Actually, FinTech already started it in the banking sector. A lot of what was under their umbrella is now part of what is referred to as the "shadow banking system". Things such as mortgages, at least in the US, originate outside the banking system.

Really good points. Positions like HR and accounting will not exist in a DAO. Neither are there managers. And computers running blockchain and smart contracts code take care of quite a lot that is currently done by people.

It also gives people an opportunity to be far more independent rather than work inside a corporation.

That is true although many do not realize when technology takes their jobs. Instead they blame it on company layoffs, mergers, or going out of business.

It takes a bit of effort to see how technology is often at the core of that.

Well technology is unavoidable and I don't really see how the job markets will be the same. I wonder if machines will just take over all the coding and we will just have programs created for whatever idea we have. No effort and all the work done. Of course the ideas/program can just be sold.
