Future Of Remote Work: Virtual Reality

The global workforce is looking at a big change in the future.

It is being discussed how much the coronavirus is going to change the way businesses are structured. I am one who feels things will be radically different in a year or two.

Many are touching upon the idea of remote work. Since people are being forced to remain home, many businesses are starting to embrace the idea of having that be ongoing.

For many companies, this is a viable option. Anyone who logs into a server or cloud database can operate remotely. It matters none where the screen is located. Individuals who fall in this category are prime candidates to continue.

However, much is made of video conferencing. Before the security issue came to light, Zoom was a stock that was Zooming. Their usage went through the roof.

The challenge is that video conferencing is nothing new. It is a technology that was around for decades. One of the biggest reasons it was not embraced is that it simply cannot replace in person meetings. There are too many variables that go into a meeting. Not only are there a number of participants but also Powerpoint and video presentations.

As humans, we use a lot more than one sense when communicating with people. A lot of this is not picked up on a video call.

That said, there is a technology that could solve this and that is virtual reality. We already see companies embracing this technology for training purposes. Down the road, it is likely that we can see VR meetings being set up. Since it will be an immersive experience, most of what takes place in person could be replicated.

Thus, the idea of remote working could take on added meaning.

Could this be the use case that is able to push Virtual Reality to the forefront. The technology has repeatedly disappointed over the years. However, with a valid use case, we could see a lot more money flow into the sector, meaning that things are sped up.

The technology certainly needs a push. Headsets are expensive and people do not seem to be adjusting to them. Thus, we need to see more improvements in that area. We also need to see the lower end computers getting more powerful to be able to run VR applications.

None of this cannot be overcome in the next couple years. If manufacturers and software developers find an overwhelming use case, they are likely invest the resources to make it happen.

Video conferencing could replace a portion of our in-office activity but Virtual Reality could substitute a great deal more.

When VR comes into its own, remote work might be a reality.

Yeah, now these technologies would begin to find relevance. Sad, many had ignored it over the years., especially in some countries like my Nigeria. It's time we dig out the best out of technologies to keep life and economy going while social life is suspended.
