Holy Silver - Part 4

(Edited)

Back with another cool silver piece of Greek Orthodox iconography. Like the rest of the collection, this is yet another family heirloom and I intend it to stay that way... unless the next generation decides to blow it off on earthly sins.

Let's first see some pics before learning more about it

The engraving on the top is enough to identify this particular icon copy

Το Ιερό Μανδήλιον

Or the "Image of Edessa" as it is known in English

According to Christian tradition, the Image of Edessa was a holy relic consisting of a square or rectangle of cloth upon which a miraculous image of the face of Jesus had been imprinted—the first icon ("image"). The image is also known as the Mandylion (from Greek μανδύλιον "cloth, towel"), in Eastern Orthodoxy, it is also known as Acheiropoeiton (Εἰκόν' ἀχειροποίητη), or "icon not made by hand".

Feel free to visit wikipedia which covers all the basic tradition there is too know behind this particular icon!

Now, let's take a closer look on some details:

On the back the COA informs us that the piece is made of 0.950 silver. Not bad!

Our workshop creates pictures based on Byzantine technique with 950 silver and paint. All subjects are museum copies from 14th century until today. The painting is handmade and every quarantee brings the artist's signature

As always, a size comparison with a regular coin, this time a 2 euro coin

Not as big as other pieces I have featured, but still quite respectable!

All in all, a really beautiful and unique piece. Definitely my favorite from what I have shown you so far!

Below are some links with the other pieces I have shared so far:

Do you have a date when it was made? It is painted or just a photocopy?

I have searched inter about Edessa and found that Edessa on a silver coin was minted during the reign of one of the city's historical rulers and served as a symbol of the city's wealth, power, and cultural significance.

All these things you have shared with us made of silver are very beautiful to look at. I have been fond of collecting silver coins since childhood. Whoever invested in Silver two years ago is now making a solid profit. Thanks for sharing the great detail about it.
