Our Pineapple Baby Is Doing Just Fine

It was a cool morning ..

The fog had just lifted, and The morning to dew was cold and covering our feet. Tiny droplets of water rest of it the edges of every blade of grass, and we were aware of their presence.

The start of the weekend had arrived .. and we decided to sit out on a little adventure. Like so many other weekends, I brewed a fresh cup of coffee, and took that coffee with me out to the garden.

With coffee in hand and mind on the growing season .. I swiftly made my way toward a small plot in our yard where we cultivate vegetables and fruits (if we are lucky). Our journey was long and tough, not many have survived such journeys. We passed old encampments where many fires were made from whatever the wilderness folk could find. It was a eat or be eaten type of world, where they were only trying to survive these brutal, brutal conditions.

Always time for a laugh .. He he he he he, I really have to stop this is all lies. This is my fire pit that we made out of an old steel rim. Works just fine and was used a couple of weeks ago. I think it’s just about time for another fire, they are always so much fun.

Molly was along for the journey .. although, her intentions were quite different than mine. Her feet were also covered in dew and moving swiftly through the grass. Her goal was to find a suitable place to deposit a number two. Ummm yeah, poo. Hey if you ask her she works very hard perfecting the process.

30 to 40 steps later for me, And maybe hundreds of steps later for Molly, we arrived at our destination! The watermelon patch.

This area is always heavily guarded .. I am not concerned or scared of burglars, plunderers, plant sabotages, small chipmunks, birds that lurk high above, insects or snakes. Why you ask, because we have the best protection available… Molly! However, I’m sorry to say that was all bull. Molly will be the first to run at the sign of a fluttering leaf in the gentle breeze. Poor girl. But! She has all the courage in the world when she’s out here with her Daddy. Hehe.

She’s such a good girl. Obviously unaware of the treasures she protects.

So, what is she protecting?

What is it that is buried deep within the green leaves of the watermelon vines? Well you’re in luck! Because I’m going to tell you.

A Baby Pineapple!

It wasn’t all that long ago .. the beginning of the summer I believe, when I was writing about starting a couple of new pineapple plants. Some of you may be aware that it takes a good deal of time to grow a new plant. And then some of you may know that it takes a greater deal of time to actually grow a pineapple from that plant. If you grow a new pineapple plant or you have an existing plant, you can expect a 2 to 3 year waiting period at the least.

And since having moved it from the end of the strawberry patch, and the end of the mulch pile, it’s been doing pretty well. I started off with two plants but now only have one. The other one was ripped out of the ground and mauled apart by what I assume was a groundhog. I since have taken measures to keep the groundhog out from under my shed and out into the wild where he belongs.

The other little pineapple plant survived .. so I transplanted it into the watermelon patch. I figured it would be less noticeable, blending in with its surroundings, and out of harms way. It seemed like the groundhog was disinterested in the watermelon, so it seemed like a good idea.

So far it is working. No shenanigans in the watermelon patch!

I imagine sometime in late September early October .. I will dig the plant up and pot it. I’ll move it indoors into a more comfortable environment. Our weather will be changing at the end of September or the beginning of October to colder nights and the possibility of frost. Pineapples don’t like frost so it needs to come in. I don’t plan on keeping this pineapple very long. I want to make sure it’s going to survive the transplant, then it will find a new home with a friend who was interested in having one. I don’t know if she remembers how long it will actually take to grow pineapple?? LOL.

We have a well established, and house broken (hehe) Pineapple plant of our own .. and she is happy in amongst our other house plants. We have harvested three pineapples those for over a span of 15 years. That’s not bad! The first one was quite big, followed by one that was half it size, followed by the third which was very very tiny but very very sweet.

2D381F75-85FC-4548-ABAB-44624617E662.jpeg

They don’t need a ton of care .. I just water it on a regular basis with the rest of the plants, and allow it some direct sunlight during the day. The spot it’s in allows it plenty of light and warmth. On occasion I have to trim some of the bottom leaves because they either turn brown or they’re in the way. The tips of the leaves are sort of pointy and actually stab you when you walk by if you’re not careful. Thus they Needed trimmed.

I’ll keep you updated ..

When I decide to move the plant indoors and repot it, I may do a post about that. Not sure how exciting that would be, but some of you may be interested and knowing if it had a successful move indoors.

Until then, enjoy your weekend everyone! Molly and I have to go refill our coffee cups. We are all tapped out.

Happy International Doggo day to Molly.
LOL these dogs are so funny, just this evening we saw a couple of calves coming down the road we took for our walk and Spark and Zoe were running for their lives.
From inside our compound they bark at these calves like they have no fear.
I hope Molly has overcome the fear of the watermelons.
I gave up on the pineapple, in a container garden there is no space for plants that take up to 3 years to produce fruit
Dragon fruit has taken its place.
Have a lovely day.

Oh yeah! I forgot about that day. Happy Dog Day to you too 😊

Good idea with replacing the pineapple with dragon fruit. It DOES take forever to produce.

As for Molly, she prefers her watermelon cut up into small pieces that are less scary. hahahaha.. Spark and Zoe, the master protectors from behind closed gates. hehe.

yeah watermelon sliced is any day better than huge monstrosities rolling around scaring little dogos.

I never would have guessed that was a pineapple if you had just showed me the picture of the leaves in the pot like that at the end. Looking really nice! A couple of years ago I had to put some wire mesh down for my parents to keep a critter from getting under their deck. It was a long process of digging down and attaching the stuff. It has worked great so far though!

Good! I was thinking about burying wire, then I said let me try this first, if they dig under it, then I'll get out the wire. The pineapples sort of look like yucca plants too. Your right, hard to tell what it is without having known.

Easier to buy them from the store, and the wait is a TON less, but fun to do non-the-less. Thanks for the support!

Hope all is well with you and the furbaby. Molly and I missed you for sure. I'll head over to your blog to see if you posted 😊
