Does capital punishment solve anything?

portada-m.jpg

In fifty-five countries in the world the capital punishment is still applied. States decide whether a person has the right to continue living or not. It is an issue that continues to be debated. There are those who support it and others who consider it an excessive sanction.

One of the focal points of the discussion is whether a human has the right to take the life of another. This from the point of view of a religion such as Christianity would be completely inconceivable.

I am of the opinion that a person's life should not be taken under any circumstances, not even when committing serious crimes such as war crimes, where the lives of many human beings are affected.

Those who defend the capital punishment justify it by arguing that it sets an example that can prevent criminal acts.

According to this, the fear of losing one's life should curb the behavior of criminals. However, in countries such as the United States, where the capital punishment exists, crimes continue to be committed that end the lives of innocent people. Increasingly, we are seeing more and more press reports of people shooting innocent people in schools, streets and shopping malls. The death penalty is doing nothing to stop this type of crime.

The real reason for maintaining the capital punishment seems to be economic. It is much cheaper to take the life of a criminal than to keep him imprisoned for twenty, thirty years, or for the rest of his days.

I recognize that there are people who are irrecoverable, with a mind so damaged that it only causes harm to others. This is the case of those murderers who enjoy watching people die, who have made death their main source of pleasure. These types of people will never recover and are a danger to society. But even in those cases I consider that they have the right to continue living, imprisoned yes, and deprived of social contact. I believe that this is a greater punishment than taking their lives.

Another reason why I do not agree with the capital punishment is the possibility of error. No judicial system is exempt from making mistakes.

There have been cases of people sentenced to long prison terms for legal errors, for tampering with evidence. Later it is proven that they were innocent and they are released, correcting in a way the mistake made. If the same person had been condemned to the death penalty nothing could have been corrected. While one is alive there are possibilities of correction, but death ends everything.

I live in a country where justice is not impartial. Where the law is applied according to certain privileges. There are many situations where people are imprisoned for the simple fact of thinking differently.

For us it would be terrible if the capital punishment existed, which would undoubtedly be used to get rid of "political enemies". This happens in other countries with situations similar to ours, where Democracy almost does not exist and where justice is applied without respecting due process or human rights.

Fortunately our legislation has a tradition against the capital punishment and it has been respected. So far no reform of the legal system has been proposed to incorporate it. I believe that in my country most of society is convinced that it would be a great mistake to give the State the power to legally end people's lives.

This is my participation for the challenge proposed by friend @galenkp in week 149.

Thanks for your time.

Hola @irvinc

Saludos.

Hello, @irvinc

Yes, you touch on an essential topic. Life in general is a prodigy that deserves to be protected. Fortunately, for now, the death penalty is not a legal option in our country. Well, unfortunately, those who are outside the legal framework, and don't give a damn about human life. But I can't imagine if the State promoted the death penalty: Pandemonium.

Greetings.

I agree with you that in this country capital punishment should never be applied, because we know the weaknesses of our judicial system, and I consider that in no country in Latin America should it be applied, for the same reason, too many failures, greetings, a hug.

It does not work, people who disrespect life will not change. Human error another problem.

Abolished in our country, rightfully so too many died without fair trial.

The possibility of making mistakes is very great, sometimes applied to innocent people. The best thing is not to have it. Thank you very much for stopping by and commenting, dear @joanstewart . A big hug from Maracay.

I agree with your point of view my friend @irvinc, human beings are not infallible and there are many loopholes in the laws. For me the death penalty is not the solution.

It is not a solution at all, it should be eliminated where it still applies. Thank you very much for stopping by and commenting dear @mafalda2018. A big hug from Maracay.

My dear @irvinc, did you make me analyze what would happen in our country if the death penalty existed? And I share your concern for all the people who would be involved in non-real crimes to eliminate them, just because this regime does not want them to be there, for which we must thank God that this does not exist. It was very nice to read it. God bless you greatly 🙏🏼🤗

In countries like ours the death penalty would be a great danger, it would be used in the worst possible way. Thank you very much for stopping by and commenting my dear @cochanet . A big hug.
