BRIGHTER TOMORROW

"damn you door" Chuks swore as he kicked at his door. "ouch" he shouted as he limbed back to check his toe which felt like it's been broken as a result of the kick. He's been struggling to open the raggedy door for minutes now with no success. The wooden old door with its worn out knob has been extra frustrating today than every other day.

"can't believe I used my money to rent this trouble for myself" he mused as he inspected his toe which seemed not to be broken, but was still very painful. He decided to sit outside by the broken up verandah for a while and reminisce about his life's journey. "nope, today isn't for bad thoughts" he thought to himself as he stood up to give the door another try.

As he climbed the two steps stairs, he looked around the veranda which gave access to about 5 rooms in the compound and couldn't help but notice the cracks that seemed to have taken over the whole place.

"this one has more cracks than my life o" he thought as he chuckled to himself, walking back to his door.

As he was about to slot in the key into the keyhole, he noticed that he was pointing the wrong key at the knob, he has actually been struggling with the wrong key all the while. He sighed at his oversight as he switched keys and within a few seconds, he was inside his room.

Sitting by the edge of his bed, loosening his shoe laces, he looked round the whole room feeling irritated. This little 3m by 3m room has been his parlor, bedroom and kitchen all in one. A safe haven where the best of his sorrows find succor.

He looked around his resting place and his eyes fell on the cooking pot at one corner of the room which was supposed to be stainless but looked like what is being used by a herbalist to prepare concoction for the mentally deranged.

The curtain by the window hung awkwardly with one edge higher than the other, the loose clothes heaped on each other on a single nail drilled into the wall with just the 2 pair of shoe he has and his slippers beneath.

"if I died today, my next of kin would be poorer than me" he thought to himself as he scans the remainder of his belongings which included the heap of dirty clothes that lent a foul smell to the room.

He stood up to open the blinds to aid ventilation, and as he folded the worn out piece of clothing, the rope holding it cut and it fell on the floor. As he turned to pick up the curtain, he noticed the reflection of the sun light in the mirror on the opposite wall. He turned around staring out the window into the void that bore the retreating ball of orange and red.

His heart felt light as if a great burden has been lifted from it. Alas he will be able to make something useful of his life and leave this shit hole. But before he leaves, he'll make his landlord understand that you don't treat prospective millionaires like him with so much disdain. Then he turned around, puffing his shoulders as he began to feel the effects of not having a fan.

"it won't matter in a short while" he thought to himself undressing and as he sat on his bed, his stomach rumbled.

*"you too won't matter either" he thought as he lay on the bed thinking about what to wear to his new office the following day. He needs to make an impression on his first day at work. That's if the sunlight caressing his face will let him have a good sleep.

We all hope that tomorrow will be better. That is why we work today for our better future tomorrow. Nice description of the rooms and emotions, could feel everything myself when reading it.

This is an interesting story, @diikaan, almost a character study. We are in the mind of someone who is despondent, but who has not lost hope. He is almost consumed by the impression his depressing apartment has on him. But then, in the end, he watches the sun set and in that moment feels he is watching his ill fortune evaporate. As your title suggests, there will be a better tomorrow.

One wonders, as one reads, if this character will be able to enjoy his good fortune,or even exploit it. So much of what is wrong seems to be a reflection of him, and not his apartment. Dirty clothes. An unwashed pan. Even using the wrong house key. So much of what is wrong actually originates with him. Will this change when he begins a new job? One hopes so.

Thank you for sharing this story with us. We appreciate that you support other authors with your comments.

He has a perception that with better fortunes, he'll be able to take better care of himself and his surroundings. And anything that he might be too lazy to do, can be paid for. That's what he hopes for!

We are the reflection of our thoughts and our actions. If you do good you will receive blessings..., if you do evil do not expect to receive gold coins. I liked the plot.

There's so many great lines here I really enjoyed. You definitely nailed the setting and used it to build your character well, and we imagine his despair and hope in his simple room that he feels is beneath him. Great story.

You do have a way around your descriptions, it felt like I was in the room with him. The part you talk about the sun being a ball that glares out orange and red was nothing short of brilliant, excellently done

Okay, I've read a lot of one Scene stories and this is by far one for the best. There's a lot of detail you put in one scene, what happens to him physically as well as his thoughts..

I honestly wish I could vote twice
