That little girl left behind - then the old woman nobody believes - is there any light and joy in this poor woman's life? She has a granddaughter. I hope (however foolishly) that this granddaughter will come around and treasure the history of this grandma! And learn the lesson of the people taken off to the camps...
Nice mechanism, @dirge, telling the story as a monologue from an old woman to her grand daughter. It's a great way to weave in both current observations and a look into the past.
