Theinkwell Poetry Challenge | Peace With Pain Itself
Ashamed and scared and nervous,
Vulnerable to the bullies,
An insecure child,
They could always hurt me more.
Then I managed to make
Peace with my little sins.
So I was ashamed no more,
But only scared and nervous.
For they could always hurt me more.
Now, I have learned some tricks
To defend myself
And even to hit back.
I am not scared, just nervous,
For they can always hurt me more.
Soon I will get to make
Peace with Pain itself;
For they can always hurt me more,
But they can't stop the clock.

"They can always hurt you more, but they can't stop the clock" is a quote I picked up from Paul Kalanithi's book "When Breath Becomes Air" which is one of my all-time favorite books.

and
Great use of the Kalanithi quote - "They can always hurt you more, but they can't stop the clock" #love it!
Thanks, Keangaroo 😁
❤️ you'll soon be no longer nervous
definitely 😉 thank you
You are very welcome ❤️❤️
That is really neat that you spun a poem off of something you read in a book. This is a poignant poem, and it captures the alternating way kids choose to fight or give up in resignation when bullying is relentless.
Thank you Jayne
I guess it was stuck in my head since the day I read it hehe and that was years ago!
A good poem, with a content of great emotional force and of denunciation, and a rhythm that catches us. Greetings, @hazem91.
