Victor kept his head down as this priest said his final words of prayers. He couldn't bring himself to look at Frank's mom as Frank's body got lowered into the ground. They say real men don't cry, well Victor thought that was bullshit. He allowed the tears flow freely from his eyes as memories of how his best friend had past came flooding in.

Victor, an upcoming artist had gone to meet a music producer and he had asked his friend Frank, to tag along with him. He had this new song that he wanted to pitch to the producer.

Victor and Frank had both gotten on a bus heading for the producers studio when their bus got pulled over by the police. Victor remained calmed, he knew the usual routine. So when the police asked him to get down from the bus, he obeyed and did as he was told. The police frisked him and when they saw his phone, they started going through it. That was illegal but they were the ones with the guns so they could do whatever they wanted.

Victor knew what they were looking for. They were trying to find anything incriminating to have a reason to arrest him. A foreigners picture on his phone was enough to label him a fraudster. They couldn't find anything on his phone so they gave it back to him, then they asked Frank to get down from the bus.

One look at Frank's face and Victor could tell something wasn't right. He gave him the “What's wrong?” look and Frank gave him the “I have something on me” look back.

“Be fast will you?” The police shouted at him and Frank did just that. He ran.

Frank ran and the police followed. But Frank's speed was no match for them, so they used something that they knew was faster, they shot at Frank.

Victor remembered watching Frank's body hit the floor as the bullet went through his heart. It turned out Frank had some marijuana on him and he had been so scared of what the police would do to him.

Victor cleaned his tears as he slowly walked away from the burial ground. He had come to pay his last respect and he had done just that. No amount of tears would bring his best friend back, life had to go on.

This is a tragic story, so believable, so relevant. The action in the story turns on one line especially:

Be fast will you?” The police shouted at him and Frank did just that. He ran.

This is the fateful moment when Frank makes a critical decision that ends in his death. The casual tone in which you describe the events, so ordinary. Death intrudes when we least expect it. And death does not come only to those who deserve it.

We feel your sorrow and sense of injustice as the story ends. Thank you for posting this story in the Ink Well community.

This is a devastating story, @prayzz. It really hit me hard, given what is going on in our society today. I have spent a lot of time in recent weeks hoping and praying that things can get better, that police forces will be held accountable and that they will be trained to de-escalate difficult situations instead of turning quickly to violence. Your story is quite appropriate for the times.

Hello @prayzz Weeding out the good from the bad is never easy, especially when society has tolerated the bad for too long. All of what you write happened hundreds if not thousands of times early on before the advent of cell phones with cameras and cameras on many city streets, and security cameras. Then the deeds of officers unworthy to call themselves protectors of the common people went unnoticed, unreported, and unsolved.

Yes, I know the story all too well. Even now, it's hard to reconcile. The acts bring the deeds to the forefront for all to see. No matter the circumstances, change is needed, and demand for an overhaul of the entire policing system is rightfully demanded.

Thanks for sharing.

True.. Change is indeed needed but unfortunately, it can't happen overnight but we all hope it happens soon.
