CREATIVENONFICTION #31 : A TERRIBLE SMELL

avatar

Nothing is indeed more memorable than a smell. A good smell makes you want to curl around its source and sniff while smiling while a bad smell sometimes makes it difficult to breathe.

This Prompt brings back memories of a time when I used to be a bit lazy in cleaning. Not important cleaning like I used to call it, but some other kinds of cleaning.

I could remember times when I would procrastinate and keep pushing up the day I will do a general cleaning of the house. The excuse I give myself is that "I just got back from work and I am tired". I will proceed to move it to the weekend.

When it's the weekend, I will be like "I have been working all week, I need to rest", then I will proceed to move it up again.I keep rotating it till I finally get to do it reluctantly.

Little did I know that some kinds of smells don't need you to procrastinate, you will get it cleared pronto.

It happened when I noticed I always hear this "scratchy" noise/sound in the store where I keep some of my books and some things I don't need anymore but have yet to sort out because I am "always busy".

I noticed the sound whenever I enter the store and I made a mental note to check it out one weekend.

This time around, I did want to find out the source of the sound and it turned out to be a small rat.

I hate having them in my house so I tried to find ways of killing it but I guess the need for survival isn't just for Humans as the rat dribbled me in an attempt to flee for its life. It ran out or so I thought and I cleared the whole place and threw out things that are no longer redeemable.

I told my husband about my ordeal in the hands of the rat and he laughed at how the rat made me do an "impromptu exercise" by running around to kill it.

I never knew he bought some rat poison and threw them in some corners of the store. After some days, I started perceiving a strange smell and I figured it was the smell of a dead rat that was when he told me he got rat poison in case the rat decides to come back.

I was on my way to work and I told myself I will find out where the rat died and remove it when I get back from work.

When I got back, I don't understand the level of decomposing as it was just mild that morning when I wanted to go to work but now the smell is so unbearable that I couldn't do anything but find out where that rat is, I couldn't even eat even though I was tired because no aroma of food can overpower this smell.

I knew I needed to take care of it ASAP so I swung into action. I cleared, I cleaned, I arranged and eventually, I found out its location and immediately went to give it a befitting burial outside.

The smell lingered for some time but was not as strong as it was initially. I scattered some air freshener around the house and in time, my house smelled lovely again.

This ordeal made me learn that keeping things well arranged will not invite them into my home so I always make sure I keep things well organized because I don't want the situation to repeat itself.

Thank you all for reading.

one thing i hate the most is using rat poison and having it die inside the house at an unknown location. its always so painful because the smell is just be everywhere especially if you use an air conditioning at your home

Oh dear rats! So offensive, a reason I don't like using rat poisons at home because it would make them die hidden and I'll have to face bad smells to find them out.

You're not the only one who procrastinates general cleaning, that shit is demanding and stressful 😂

The smell is just too terrible. As for the general cleaning, I can't come and kill myself o

Thank you for so much for visiting.

Procrastination is indeed a thief of time. I can remember when I used to procrastinate about my cleaning too. It didn't end well😅

The stench from dead rats is totally unbearable and very nauseating. Good thing you got rid of the dead rat.

Well, at least there was a positive outcome and you became more organised. There's nothing worst than the smell of poisoned dead rats, and that's the catch side of setting poison for them.
Luckily you found the rat and were able to restore your environment to its former glory and better.
