A long time ago, at a time when kings rules and barbarian were feared. A small kingdom prospered under the reign of their King. He was a wise and just King, who only wished to provide a good life for his people.
As he grew old, he decided to build a wall around the kingdom, to protect it from the barbarian. He began to build it, half way through, he fell sick and died. Word spread of his death, barbarian began to troop into the kingdom, wrecking mayhem and causing damages to people properties, taking things forcefully and run away, killing anyone that tried to stop them.

The Prince and their to the throne tried to fight them off, but they always returned. Causing leave for his people. This caused him to ignore the completion of the wall his father had started. He was too busy getting rid of those that had snuck in.
This went on for over a year, he realized he couldn't go on fighting for the rest of him life. So now, as a King, he called his noble trusted council and sought their advice. They beseeched him complete the work his father had started. Finish the wall..
But how could he focus on the wall when the barbarian were killing his people?

They then realized the only way to succeed in building the wall was if the barbarian were distracted. So they organized a team of skilled soldiers, a general led them. A rampage around the kingdom, dealing with the barbarians severely. While this was going on, the king resumed building the wall.

Soon, the barbarian in the kingdom were finished, so the General focused on stopping more from entering. But none came. For over a month, not a single barbarian tried to invade the kingdom. It was suspicious. So he sent spies to gather information, and what they got was shocking.
The barbarians that used to be individual group chad now been organized by a war lord, and they were preparing for battle. Against the kingdom. They didn't want the King to build the wall.
The King couldn't stop building, he was almost through. The General told him not to worry, he and his men would give their lives for the kingdom.

Not too long after, the barbarians attacked now organized. The General and his men rode out to meet them. As the wall got built, then fought tooth and nail. It was a fierce battle, one that took a huge toll in the barbarians and the kingdom.
So fierce was it that no one survived the battle. All the soldiers and the barbarians, the warlord and the General included died in that battle.

Two days later, the wall was completed. Sealing the kingdom against future attacks. During the celebrations, they didn't forget the men who had risked their lives to ensure the wall got built.
To keep the story fresh in the people's mind, the King had built a giant statue of the General in the middle of the kingdom, reminding everyone of his sacrifice.

And so the story got passed down, generation to generation, the legend of the General. And so the wall still stands till today, so does the legend. It reminds the people that the only thing that is truly worth dying for. IS HOME.

An interesting story. The general sacrificed his life together with others. The king did well by putting a statue to keep remembering them for what they did to their kingdom.

The legend of the general--this would also make a good title for this story. You develop the theme very well. The tone of the story is consistent with a tale that might be told about heroic feats of old. You describe the push and pull of battle so the reader understands why the General had to sacrifice his life in order to save his community from barbarians.

Thank you for posting this story in the Ink Well community.

Hello @ubani1,
Your last paragraph is perfect. I'll start with that, because that is the last thing in the reader's mind. An epic war is waged. The very existence of the kingdom is a stake. The dimension of the sacrifice is enormous. All warriors must die in order to save the people.

The way you tell story, that loss of life is tragic, but justified. There are a few rough patches in the story where style interferes with the flow of the piece, but still it all comes out well in the end.

I hope you keep writing, and posting your stories in the Ink Well community.

What a good story brother, in which the king had to sacrifice his life and those of his soldiers to keep the life and integrity of his community protected, also very good idea to create a statue in honor of the fallen during that battle. Greetings.
