Sex Change in Thailand - Papaya trees that is...
Sex changes and papayas? What?
Yes its got to be Thailand! Let's face it. Sex changes in Thailand are far from rare. Often times the most beautiful girls are guys. Or used to be guys, or still are guys or somewhere in between. Confusing yes. Important? No, unless you're trying to find out close up. Live and let live is generally the motto over here. As long as you're not harming anyone do whatever you like. As long as you're happy!
Ladyboys and papayas
What do ladyboys and papaya trees have in common? Well apparently it is possible to change the sex of a papaya tree also. I have to admit that I was quite surprised to learn that and studied the technique. This is my first experience growing papaya or any fruit bearing trees. I was quite excited to watch some of the trees grow quite strong and tall then produce flowers. Sadly the biggest three were male plants and only one needed to remain. My research told me that to change the sex just chop off the tree near the bottom of the trunk and there is a good chance it will turn to female. That I did and now just waiting for the results. Much easier than a human sex change now isn't it? This guy in the video below is even talking about gay papaya trees.
Let's have a look at the straight (so far) papayas in my garden ;)
A male papaya next to a female. I've been reading up on these plants and apparently the leaves are different. However, they look the same to me so I wait until flowers are produced. Then you know for sure.
The top of the cut papaya tree. I crosscut some ridges in and threw some compost around the roots, some of which stuck to the cut area.
The cut trees looking quite sad. Let's see if they branch out and rejuvenate themselves perhaps turning into females. Let's face it, a sex change in Thailand is nothing new ;)
Now that's a male papaya plant...
This is a female papaya hopefully laden with juicy fruits soon.
Another female papaya producing the goods ;)
A quick update on the rest of the garden.
Now that I cut two large male papaya trees, the ginger and other baby papayas have a chance to get some sun and grow quicker.
The spinach is still growing... slowly.
The aloe vera my friend gave me is growing quite well. All I did was stick it in the ground.
I hope you enjoyed checking out the progress of my garden and don't take these gender terms too seriously! I'll try to keep you updated on the papaya gender change attempt :)
Learn something new everyday! So only female plants produce fruit?
Also, I love Thailand and cant wait to go back!
!bro
Well yes and no. Apparently its possible to have male and female parts on the same plant as well. :) Thanks for commenting! Yes Thailand is a great place to enjoy life :)

Very curious to see how this experiment turns out, be sure and let us know.
I surely will. It's quite interesting to see the development and the different opinions by the Thais of what actions to take hehe.
