Gin Stephens has a compelling story to tell, about a discovery that dramatically improved the quality of her life. Members of my family have benefited tremendously from it. I am writing today to make you aware of it, dear reader, in the hopes it may prove to be very beneficial to you as well.

The journey to this discovery began with what is sadly far too common, at least here in America. The endless search for a "magical" weight-loss plan of some sort or another. Driving an incredible and seemingly insatiable (<= clue?) demand and market for "fad of the minute" dieting programs.

What I have to share with you is more than a diet. Much more ...

Intermittent Fasting - Not a Diet, A Lifestyle!

Gin Stephens first came to our attention through another family member. Who, frankly, did not present a very compelling argument for considering what she has to say. Probably because they were wresting with the key word in that subtitle you see just above.

Fasting!? 😳
Oh no ....

Can anyone read this word dating back to antiquity and claim any neutrality about what they are almost immediately thinking?

Here is what we (at least in America) far too often prefer to think about instead. Yeah, I know. That was not nice ... 😉

Seriously, dear reader, whatever is going through your mind at the moment, please, please read on, before "passing judgment" ...

"Lead by example" is a simple but awesome phrase when it comes to thinking about the type of leaders we might consider following. Here is why Gin Stephens is one such person to consider very seriously:

  • A sincere and compassionate woman who has "been there, done that," she has a remarkably consistent track record of supporting people through her podcast. Through it, she is always providing encouragement and inspiration to her followers.

  • She seems to have a very clear idea in her mind about "the line" between "discipline" and "love." That is rare, but vital in this area, as she knows all about what it takes to be successful. Especially early on.

    Bad news: We don't want to do without! 👎

    Good news: We're talking about ideally fasting for 18 to 20 hours in a 24-hour day. And some times longer. Trust me. In spite of what may be your first thoughts, you will not die. 😉

    Even better news: Within days, given how favorably and beneficially your body responds, you will notice a difference. Not months. Not weeks. Days! 👍

  • Eating. Again this is not a diet. So there is no specifically prescribed food to eat. The focus is not eating for what most people will view as an uhhh ... "unnaturally" long length of time. You are in for a welcome surprise on what a "reset" to this mentality does for your well-being.

  • Benefits. Yes, for most people, there will be a welcome loss of weight. That is only the beginning. Beyond that, here are 3 vitally important additional benefits:

Yes, well, dear reader, there is just one "teeny, weeny" catch. You need to fast to activate it! On this Diet Doctor webpage, we learn about the discoveries on autophagy made by Yoshinori Ohsumi, which resulted in him winning the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 2016.

When we don't eat, release of insulin goes down and glucagon goes up. Glucagon is "kind of the opposite hormone to insulin." Fasting increases the release of glucagon, providing the greatest known boost to autophagy. Which, in turn, stimulates growth hormone for producing new cellular parts. "You need to get rid of the old stuff before you can put in new stuff."

Well into the journey of discovery about the benefits of intermittent fasting, my family member had been so encouraged by the progress made, they decided to tackle another "big hurdle" on their path to better health. That hurdle had a lot of sugar in it!

To be clear, as stated above, there is no specific eat this or that details presented for implementing this new intermittent fasting lifestyle. That said, it is stating the obvious that not all food is "created equal."

You want me to learn to "do without" each day @roleerob, but deny me the "reward" of eating whatever I choose after? I am all about "abundance" brother! You know, an abundance of pizza 🍕, beer 🍺, a "dietary portion" ... 😉 ... of ice cream 🍨 every now (and then) ... Give me a break!

Yep, I did say simple, but I never said easy ... 🙂 Too many of us are well acquainted and have an "up close and personal" relationship with "comfort food" impulses. And the more frequently we "feed" those impulses, the stronger the hold they have on our lives ...

To be crystal clear, intermittent fasting is beneficial, no matter what you are tempted to eat, when your "window" is open. Also, the successful implementation of it will begin the process of breaking down the above mentioned "hold" of poor dietary habits and associated patterns of behavior ...

The power of this book is similar to that written by Gin Stephens and for the same reason. The authors were themselves faced with the "irreversible" effects of diabetes and determined to prove otherwise.

That is, to prove that diabetes can, in fact, be reversed! I am happy to report, just like these gentlemen indicate in their book, that my family member's recent blood tests have confirmed how well founded their faith was in putting into practice what these gentlemen have to say.

Intermittent fasting definitely helps with insulin resistance. Following what is covered in this book will "drive a stake through its heart!" 🙌

One of the cold, hard realities of life, at least for some, is that you are your own best advocate. We all appreciate those who care enough about us to look out for us, but who are we going to "blame," if that doesn't happen? With serious consequences?

There are so many aspects of our lives which "rise or fall" based upon how we choose to answer this "challenge."

The "siren song of the world" is constantly blaring out at us messages, both conscious and subliminal, which will "tell" you to act in a manner which ultimately is not beneficial. And certainly contrary to what you have now read in this post. A personal "favorite" example being the brilliant marketing slogan - "Obey Your Thirst!" Yeah, right. What could possibly go wrong ...

Eat better. Sleep better. Intermittent fasting is a simple no-cost-to-you lifestyle resulting in a greater sense of well-being and improved energy and vitality. Hopefully, for my new "band of brothers," (and sisters ... 😉) I have provided you some inspiration to at least look into what I have presented here. I can not emphasize enough on the importance of intermittent fasting! Add regular exercise to it, and it's hands down one of the healthiest lifestyles you could lead! Very well written!

Coming from a medical professional, I am very pleased to have your endorsement of this powerful concept @simplifylife! Yes, adding regular exercise is not mentioned in this post. I wish I could report I am a sterling example of adding this in, but ... I'd be a little short of truthful ... 😉 It's a work-in-progress.

For my age, I am told by my doctor that I enjoy good health. For this, I am grateful. And I do get outside in the garden regularly and, at least, "play in the dirt" ... 🙂

Now, I just need to be more consistent on getting my bicycle out and "expanding my perimeter" out into the surrounding community ...

Yep! My "base line" is trying to consistently go up and down the stairs into our basement several times a day. To keep those little "lube pumps" in the leg joints going that a physical trainer years ago emphasized. Hahaha ... 🙂

My word @roleerob what a post! You sure make an effort, which is wonderful. There is tons of, ahem, food for thought here - sorry about that! I knew someone else who would try this exact approach to body health and he would fast only allowing himself water, which if you're fasting you must still allow yourself to drink water. He would also stand by this approach. Now I have read your post I intend to give it a go at some stage. As you know I am currently in the second phase of my treatment so can't engage this at the moment, but I think it certainly has tons of merit. Our body shouldn't really be processing food all day long when it could be doing other things to ensure healthy maintenance. Thank you so much for sharing this post and I will check out in more detail the works and ethos of Gin Stephens.

I can hardly recommend something more highly than what you have just read. What value can be placed on our health? While I have no thought of prolonging my life, I have a very keen interest in being as functional as I can manage, for whatever number of days have been granted to me.

Yes, you must keep yourself properly hydrated. The link at the bottom of this post shares my own personal story about what I went through years ago. Dealing with a terrible intestinal infection that can be fatal ...

There is always (well ... maybe not always, but usually, if you look for it ...) a silver lining and one big one for me, coming out the other side of that ordeal, was finally learning to drink water. It may sound silly, but it certainly wasn't for me.

I think one of my friends in Taiwan was on this diet, she ate all her meals within an 8 hour window every day. Is this the same one? I've heard some people shorten the window downs to 2 hours!! That's really crazy!!! Just wondering, how far is your family member in this diet now? And what is his/her thought so far?

Yes @livinguktaiwan, from your description, it is the same or very similar. The shorter the window the better the results. My dear one typically (you can allow yourself some "cheat" days ... 😉) eats only one meal a day. Refers to is as OMAD - One Meal a Day!

They are 3 years into it and have lost ~ 70 lbs. in weight. As beneficial as that is, the other benefits detailed in this post are greater still for them. They are "evangelists" for this lifestyle and have successfully gotten others to try it, as well as confirm how well it works. There is a lot of science behind why it is so transformational.

Great stuff, a very interesting read, all that food talk has got me hungry:)

I know a lot of people who fast and myself although not a conscious thing have always had a natural draw towards eating in a small period of the day.

I never eat breakfast and tend to go through to mid afternoon until I eat so adapting this to 18 hours would probably be quite easy.

... then it sounds like you would have a "leg up" on many in adapting to this lifestyle. It has many health benefits. Like you, I found it easier to adapt to than those of my dear ones who are more inclined to pretty steadily be eating something!

Iv'e always been that way, never enjoyed eating breakfast whereas some can't do a thing until they eat, I don't really have a set meal time, I eat when hunger registers.

... I'd say too many of my countrymen are overweight from eating too much of the wrong foods. Food that is very low in nutritional value. I provided some examples in this post.

Combined with eating more than they need, it is a "deadly" combination ...

@roleerob Do Americans suffer from obesity by eating a lot of junk food like hamburgers, pizza, and fried chicken?

Are the foods in the photos you posted are fresh, natural foods that prevent obesity?
Many Koreans now have obesity because they eat a lot of hamburgers, pizza, and fried chicken.

Yes @silvergrifin007 those type of foods are examples. Very commonly, they come from people eating at what we call "fast food restaurants." They are relatively inexpensive meals and "tasty," but not very nutritious. Their is an old saying here, "you get what you pay for" ...

Sorry to hear Koreans have the same problem!
