AKIRA Anime Review | Neo-Tokyo is about To Explode

Akira is one of those animes that remoulded the whole appearance of the anime industry. It was released in1988, but still, it's hard to conceive the whole idea of the film. Katsuhiro Otomo is the man behind this brilliant masterpiece, Akira is created from his own 6 volume manga, which's volumes released both before and after the anime.

Akira's first half is made from the first part of the first volume, and the second half is from the last volume's last part. So there's still a lot of stories left to tell even after the movie ends.

On the first outlook, it may fall between a sci-fi, cyberpunk genre. But it deals with both spiritual and technological ideologies. I've seen it a lot of times, every time I watch it, there's something new I could read from the story. At first, the ending was like full of chaos, eventually after reading about it and re-watching it grasped a lot of ideas.

There's a lot of action scenes in the anime, which's perfection still most of the animations couldn't achieve. Its action scenes can easily complete with live-action movies. A lot of people tried to make it as a live-action film after the release of the anime. Keanu Reeves announced one. That much is the scope of this anime.

The animation is so perfect that even the smallest thing has pretty deep detailing. Chasing scenes are animated in the next level.

Basically, it's the story of two friends Kaneda and Tetsuo, two orphans. They are living in a dystopian society which placed in the time period 2019, which's 30 years after the explosion showing at the beginning of the anime. They are motorcycle thugs, Kaneda is the leader of their team. He bosses around everyone, Tetsuo didn't like it but he tried to hide that inside him.

As the story progresses there was an incident that leads to unimaginable consequences. There's also a parallel story that happens in the town, it was about the kids who have psychedelic powers. They left the government prison and now they are in this outside world.

Tetsuo accidentally hits one of these boys, then everything changes. When Authorities gets back the boy they also take Tetsuo with him, he was injured. When analysing him they find a change in him. He's having powers now.

I think it's time to talk a little bit about Akira, it's the name of the most important characters this anime. Akira is the one who is the reason for the explosion that happened 30 years back. He's the most powerful one from those kids. There's spiritual gang's who believes Akira as some kind of God, their story is also happening in the background.

Tetsuo gets all the same powers of Akira but in an inverse manner. He's just the opposite of the Akira. So after getting out of prison he starts his search for Akira. When seeing Tetsuo the spiritual gangs doubts him as Akira. After the search finally, Tetsuo finds what's left of Akira. Some issues in a few test tubes.

All this time Tetsuo was losing control of his body. Finally, he becomes completely out of control and turns to some kind of a monstrous baby appearance. Tetsuo starts to devour the whole of the city.

Then it's the time of the appearance of the long waited Akira, he again creates that mushroom cloudy layer to keep Tetsuo within. It was what he did 30 years back. Then we see the whole mushroom cloud shrinking and finally becomes invisible. Then we see the world after all these explosions and wreckage Tetsuo has caused. We can see Kaneda riding his bike again in the middle of the wrecked town.

There's still a lot story left to tell, and there's a lot to understand from this. It's more of an experience. It's the story of the survival, the survival of humans after all of these disasters. People living again and trying to build the world as before.
