HEALTHY OBSESSIONS: BIKES BIKES AND MORE BIKES

avatar

poppy edit.jpg

I love #motorcycles and always have, any type shape or size I just can't get enough of them. I was once accused of being obsessed with them something that I agreed with seeing no issue with that tag. But for some obsession is considered unhealthy and the definition suggests so.

When someone is obsessed, they've lost control of their feelings about the object of their obsession. The adjective obsessed is often used to simply mean "very interested," but when someone is truly obsessed, their interest has become compulsive, and they've begun to lose control over it.
https://www.vocabulary.com/

Whilst I can accept that being obsessed with a person who doesn't have the same feelings for you is a issue is it really a negative to be obsessed with a piece of machinery or a hobby or am I just happy to wear a badge with negative connotations?

Since I was a child I have owned and raced bikes, through my youth they gave me the power to escape on my own and as a adult bikes became a hobby and a investment. I have over the years purchased a uncountable number of machines and currently have more than I can remember. I am constantly looking at classified adds and on auction sites with a view to add to my collection, often buying basket cases that the average person would consider junk.

ariel 1200.jpg

But here's the thing these scrap heap ready bikes give me hours of pleasure and disappearing into the workshop with a rusty relic of the road to appear months later with a restored gem is one of the most satisfying feelings I get.

IMG_7263.JPG

That feeling is extended to riding them also, getting out on the open road with the wind howling around you while sat on top of a roaring macing is unmatched. Something that has become more enjoyable now that the wife also rides and we can tear up the tarmac together.

his hers2000.jpg

So back to the title of being #obsessed, someone who spends their life conserving nature, looking at their stamp collection or painting a masterpiece, for these people their passion is all consuming and therefore by definition obsessive but is what they are doing a negative thing? I feel not, so the question is should we take another look at how we define this word?

Until such time as some one can explain to me why being dedicated to a interest is a negative I shall continue to wear this badge with pride, "OBSESSED" you bet your ass I am!

Thanks for taking time to look at my post, until next time stay safe folks!

That's amazing! I completely agree. The emotion that two-wheelers give cannot be explained by words :)

I think you have to ride to understand the feeling, compared to being cocooned in a car i'll take the bike and the elements every time.

Oh yeah, looks like bike heaven to me.

@johannpiber, A good friend may also like this and @bigtom13 might also have a peep!

Where are the bikers on Hive? You will love this!

Really great stuff here and congrats on your restoration work!

Btw. What is the name of the one in the last photo? I have never seen it before?

Thanks, the little bike at the end is a Brockhouse Corgi powered by a 98cc Excelsior 2 stroke.
@missionmx started a community #motorcycles but not much traffic there.

An amazing little bike that you have there. A Blockhouse Corgi of all things.
There should be many bikers on Hive, but the mission is to gather them.
Have you guys considered alternative tags? Such as #motorbikes?
Yes, I think you have.

I have and tried them in the past with little effect, I also thought about starting my own community and may still do that in the future.

Your own community might be the answer my friend.
All that you need is the right contact might even be a witness that knows where the bikers hide here on Hive.

I think it may be the way forward i'm going to do some digging around and try to get some idea of where the bikers are.

Thanks a lot my friend, that's a great post, I just wouldn't know how to ride the bike on the last photo ... because there's not enough air in the tires 😉

Hahaha, that last little bike is a "Brockhouse Corgi" of all things Sir Johann and Paul hasn't restored it yet.
I asked him what it is, as I have never seen that design before, but I have not Googled it yet.

The war Arial's are my favorites and I like how he puts the histories of the bikes in his posts.

His post before the one that I tagged you in, explains all about the the thousands of Arials that they built to rescue the troops that were trapped as the German army was advancing.

You also have a great week and thank you!

I have never seen such a motorbike before, but there are a lot of them to see if you google it 🙂
Right, motorbikes played a role in WW2 - Harley and Indian rode for the United States.

Still have to get to Google my friend. I remember there was some movie with Steve Mcqueen on a Harley, but I forget the movie's name.
They did indeed play a very important role in the war.

We also have a very old aeroplane here that as was used as a mail carrier in the war and I like all of the old things.

Blessings and thank you!

I'm late with my replies - watched some YouTube videos yesterday evening and when I woke up it was too late ;) lol

I know he was riding motorbikes, but I cannot remember such a movie. I have done a quick search, but have found only this video where he's riding a Triumph:

I like these old things too, if the people take care of them and not just let them rust.

Just remembered, it was "The Great Escape" and I am confused about the bike.
No need to worry about the lateness, as I do the same my friend.
Lovely sunshine here today and tomorrow.

Now when I talk about the "Cape of Storms" named as such in the early days by the explorer Bartholomeuw Diaz (Don't know if I spelled correctly), have a look what I am talking about here below!

BB162k7g.jpg

That is certainly not a weak little tree, but a giant and he finally surrended to the high speed storm winds!
End of days for a new Volvo!

Yes, the YouTube Video was from that movie "The great Escape", and Steve McQueen was riding a Triumph 😉

I think to throw such a tree it needs a strong storm which blows for quite a while against the it.

We have such strong winds here to from time to time, but luckily very seldom in the area where I live.

Cheers and !BEER

Yep agreed that it was indeed a Triumph.
Very few people here can escape the force of the winds here and the South-Easter is called "The Cape Doctor", as that blows at times all year round and they say that it's so strong that it blows all of the germs out to sea!
People have to hold on to poles when they walk in the streets.

Cheers and thank you!

Well, I think that this wind is a bit stronger than our usual winds here. Of course we have strong storms too, but I could not remember that I ever had to hold on somewhere because of the wind.
... it blows all of the germs out to sea! - that's a nice saying 🙂

This "Cape Doctor" a south-easter wind record was measured at 160km Sir Johan.
Then we don't speak here of the winter gale force winds.

Winds that can flip fully loaded big trucks and rip out trees, destroy house roofs and can create real havoc whenever they feel like it!

Just to give you an idea of what I am talking about.

Blessings and thank you!

160 km/h is as fast as my motorbike goes. That's fast enough for me - wind and bike 😉

I have seen videos where such strong winds have knocked trucks over and destroyed houses. These are strong forces and you can't do anything against it apart from search a safe place.

Good morning @papilloncharity, have a great day - cheers and !BEER 🙂

Good morning Sir @johannpiber and hope that you will have a good day.

Yes, indeed there are also videos about the strength of the winds here and as you say, best is to find a safe place.

We are fairly well protected here, as we are in a bit of a dip and it would be ideal to live in one of the high houses with open views. But then we would be exposed to the winds, so it's not a good idea.

Cheers and thank you!

Yes, I also think it's certainly better to have not such a good view, but therefore be safe in the house.
The day was quite nice, but now the sky has got very dark and I think we'll have a little rainstorm later.

Oh yeah, we are slowly learning how to handle the winds here my friend.
I have a problem since childhood with my left inner ear and stong winds leave me in much pain.
Until I got the idea to wear an ear plug that I make with cotton wool.
Now I can walk around in any winds and have no pain.
Funny how life works.

Always good to have rain late as it is so nice to lay in bed and listen to rain.

Cheers and thanks!

True and now I even sleep with it in my ear 🙂
Of courseI make a new one every knight and am getting very good at making earplugs with cotton wool 🤣

Well, at times it rains and at times it doesn't.
At times we laugh and at times we don't.
At times our wives want to kill us and at times they don't.
Some really bad poetry here just to get a laugh 🤣

Have a good night my friend!

Cheers and thank you!

I hope with the other ear you can hear enough what you are dreaming 😉

Good morning @papilloncharity, I hope you had a good night🙂

That poem was what I needed this rainy morning. I had planned a nice ride today, because I took the day off, but in the middle of the night it started to rain and I don't think we'll see sunshine today. So I take these words from your poem: it rains, but I laugh andhope my wife does not want to kill me 😂

Have a great day.

Haha 😂

It was raining here, but not in Slovenia - after finishing my replies I repacked my stuff from one backpack to the photo backpack and drove by car to Slovenia for the first time since the end of February. I have just made a short visit to one of my favorite places there and left when more and more people disturbed the silence of the roaring waterfalls 😉

Oh, I'm sure that my beloved wife sometimes think would love to visit me every Sunday on my grave ;) lol

I will go to Mrs. Google to show me Slovenia and it must be a magic place if you are going there.

Hahaha, I am sure that many women think that about their husbands now and then Sir Johann.

Hope your Friday was good!

I was at the Šunik water grove: https://www.soca-valley.com/en/attractions/nature/rivers/2015121119254077/the-sunik-water-grove/
From my home it is an about 1 1/2 hours drive over 2 passes. I have made some photos, but I'm way behind with editing, so they'll have to wait a few days, and I really seldom think of taking a video, although I always have my small Canon G9X camera with me.

All women are the same as well as we are all the same, but that's what the women say ;)

Thank you for the link and it really looks like a fantastic place.
Then I carried on and Googled Slovenia and it looks like a lovely place. The second oldest monastry is there.
You guys in Austria is also lucky to be surrounded by so many countries.

On the map they look like the same distances as South Africa's neighboring countries.
I have done some 2 day driving trips here when I was younger, leave early, sleep at 12pm-4am and drive again until about 10pm the next day.
But I think that some of the countries are much closer to you guys?

Maybe one day me and the wife will visit Austria.

Cheers and thank you!

That's the official tourist spot, which is very beautiful and I love it, but even more I love the forest around and there's a second stream too, where usually nobody else is 😀

I can be at the border to Italy and Slovenia in about half an hour. They are the nearest countries in the South. The others are reachable within a few hours.

Tell me before you come that I have time to leave the continent ;) lol
Austria is a beautiful country, you will see 🙂

Indeed a beautiful place, and one can spend days there if one has the time. And that forest you are talking about, I am dying to see!

Wow! You have the bike, and you have the car for the family. If I were to live there, I would never be home on weekends. France, Rome, and all of the other countries will see me very regularly.
You are so lucky.

I will be a very happy man if I were to visit Austria, especially with you not there! Lol.
I suppose you will flee to the Siberian flats of Russia. But beware, I will find you there! Hahaha.

Cheers, and thank you.

Good morning 😄

the forest is just an old beech forest between the two streams, but I have never met anybody there, what makes it special for me 😁

Paris: 1,200 km, Rome: 800 km
These are the shortest distances using the Autobahn/Highway. If you want to see some landscape you have to add quite a few kilometers to these distances. So, weekend trips would be only stressful, but you may believe me that I have thought of making such weekend journeys too 😉

I'd go to South Africa because you would never search me there 😂

Yeah, that's the idea, as no people means peace and serenity!

Very tempting to tackle those weekend trips, especially on a 4 day long weekend trip to the far ones.

Good evening Sir Johann,

Hahaha, very clever, as it is the last place that I would search lol.

4 days separated from my family? I have been a few times away from home for my job and a few times a month I'm at work over night, but sleeping somewhere else just for fun I can't remember.
This is why I always make day trips - I need to see them at least in the evening.

This will of course change when the kids move out and live their own lifes, but my wife will stay ... I think 😉

No Sir Johann, a long weekend means that there is a public holiday on Friday, or a Monday.
So no work on the Friday, or the Monday and the schools also close on Public holidays, so you can take your family with you in the car and book a place at the destination to stay.

I don't know if you guys in Austria also have public holidays?

I used to pack my family up and travel down to to sea. A round trip of about 1300 kilometers.

If you play your cards right, your wife might consider staying hahaha
Otherwise we will have an old Austrian mountain goat put out to pasture lol.

Cheers and thank you!

OK, one last reply, but then it's time for the mountain goat to sleep a few hours 😉

I know what you mean, but we don't like such short trips of 3 or 4 days over the weekend, because the roads are packed with other people and it's no fun to drive when the whole country has holidays. Most of the free time we'd be sitting in the car. On such long weekends we usually visit my parents. Usually we have 2 weeks off at a time and in this case driving a whole day long does not matter ;)

Oh yes, we have public holidays - I think we have 13 days a year and sometimes they are on a Thursday or on a Tuesday, what makes a real long weekend if you take the day between off too.

Very clever indeed if you are allergic to crowds of people.
Talking about crowds, I called to wish my one grandson a happy birthday and got some shocking news.

My daugther is a psychiatrist and she is on the staff of a very big old age home.
They have 320 elderly residents, some of them also in frail care.
Now there's only 240 left due to this covid virus. She said that thus far they have had up to 6 deaths in one day!

We used to support the home for 17 years before we moved down here 2 years ago and I used to preach there on 2 sundays of every month, so we know many of the old people well. Now many of them are gone.
Shocking news indeed.

So it's a good thing for you guys to keep a safe distance from people and you must also warn your parents.

Cheers and thank you!

Since this Covid crisis began I have a very good excuse to avoid other people 😉 lol

These are very bad news, especially when you knew many of these people, I feel sorry for you.

My parents live in that small village and I think they are quite safe, but they do still take care and try to stay safe, of course, because the crisis is not over yet, although many people think so.

Some are saying that the crisis will still be with us next year Sir Johann.
Mainly due to people ignoring the safety requirements and we see many on the roads that do not even wear masks. They also don't keep distances and just carry on with normal life.
So sad that some will never care.

Glad to hear that your parents are safe my friend.

Indeed, it is sad to think about all of those dear old people, but such is life my friend.
The flesh is powerless.

Cheers and thank you!

I would say that it will be with us even longer, the virus will mutate and the people will still don't care. Many listen to the wrong people and don't believe that the virus exists and many just don't care about the other people.

Oh yeah, eveyone has an opinion and there's a lot of confusion around.
Then of course there's also the conspiracy theorists that are having a field day, even sowing more discontent.
We have such advanced IT communicattion systems today that stories can be shared in seconds.
One can only wonder how the old people struggled with communications during the "Black Death Plague" in the 14th century.

Of course selfishness also play a big role nowadays!

Cheers and thank you!

Haha, I just said in my other reply that I don't want to discuss conspiracy theories. Even if there was a bit truth behind a few of them, they are still wrong and scare the people.

A few days ago a former friend posted the latest truth he has seen on facebook. He believes it and spreads that sh*t.
I Said "former friend" because he did not stop telling people of the hoax virus and that they shouldn't wear masks nor follow the restrictions.

That is the danger of these false "truths" that people love to spread around.
All that any nitwit needs to do is to research a tiny little bit about the facts, before thay take any action by spreading the rubbish.
I feel sorry for the guy, as he thought that he had a scoop and now he looks like a fool.
But it continues to happen all of the time and people will just not learn.
Good that he became a former friend.

Some people are born with "suspicous minds" my friend.
I also have no time for insecurities and the scary stories that they spread.
Birds of a feather will flock together and they always support the one that's made a fool of when shown the truth. The norm is to insult the truth bearer.

You did well to leave it alone!
