My experiences in Community Management

I was just another girl on the blockchain until I decided to start running a show, Beauty Parlour with @bookoons. The show was inspired by my natural hair. I knew how tough managing mine is and I just wanted to connect with others on a journey like mine and share helpful tips I have found useful for me. That was the beginning! I interviewed many personalities, male and female from all over.

It was during this time that I got my first job on the blockchain, hosting a discord show that was my brain child on a discord server (STACH). I proceeded to co-hosting shows, hosting birthday parties, anniversary parties and curation parties. It was a real fun ride as I was engaged almost every other evening.

I have since worked with a diverse array of projects and overtime I have learnt some survival skills in community management which I will share with you shortly. However before I do that, let me answer a few basic questions I have been asked in my 2 years as a community manager.

Q: Is community management fun?
A: Yes it is.

Q: Is community management easy?
A: No, it isn't.

With those fundamental questions answered, let us get into the tips.

  1. It requires planning; you don't just jump into work with thorough planning. Your t's must be crossed and your i's must be dotted. This makes you organized and efficient, also makes you exceptional at what you do because you are on top your game at every point in time.

  2. You must have strong communication skills; yes, I said (wrote) it! Your communication skills must be topnotch, you must find the best way and words to communicate to your community, not just showcasing your verbiage and great command of the lexicon. You must consider comprehensibility of your information.

  3. You must include your community in your conversation; they aren't a dump ground! Do not just drop information and leave, you must be available to attend to them, further explain and help them understand you. You must ask for feedback and use it appropriately.

  4. You must be in their mind; as trivial as this sounds, it is very crucial. You must think like your community when making decisions, what I mean is that, you must consider their point of view and standpoint, don't just force them to accept you. It is not a dictatorship.

  5. You must encourage networking; encourage your community to integrate and network, this way., they are included and have a sense of belonging which helps your community to grow.

  6. You must be there; this is pretty straightforward. You must be there for them when you are needed, ensure you touch base with them as often as possible.

  7. Do not be grumpy; I must be honest with you at this point, this is the hardest part of your job. Some community members will ask you questions that the answers are so obvious and right in front of them. In times like this, you may feel frustrated but please, do not lash out. Respond as politely as you can even if it requires you taking some time or some deep breathe.
