Bozzlife: Thoughts on Starting a Esports Team

I've been toying around with the idea of trying to get an Esports Team going in the school district I work for. I am not fully committed to the idea, but I think I am finally starting to break the ice with the other administrators about it.

In the past every time I would bring up the idea of an Esports team they would laugh at me and not quite take me seriously. Over the past couple of months, I have started to realize that there is a huge potential out there for students who may wish to go this route.

The scholarship money alone from colleges is almost better than what a top football player will get to play at the college level. This would also give students who might not otherwise be involved in a school sponsored activity the opportunity.

I know there are still a lot of logistics that need to be taken care of. There are several schools in the state who have teams already and it sounds like some of the events that they have attended in the past haven't been very well organized.

Last time I brought up the idea to my colleagues I was asked if I was volunteering to be the coach of the team. I told them I wouldn't be opposed to it, but I wanted to make as much as the head football coach makes. Of course they laughed at that as well.

I think this could be a really great opportunity for our students, I just need to wrap my head around how to roll it out.

Have you been involved in an official esports league in the past? How did that work out? Was it organized by your college or high school? Was it worth it to you? I'd love to hear your feedback!

If I can arm myself with as much information as possible then I will feel a lot more comfortable with this whole thing.

Great initiative and I do hope you prevail!

Think of sponsors like the game developing studios themselves. They have something to gain from popularizing such stuff, no? Or open-minded companies, even some local representatives of giants like those fast-carbon drink/food producers.

I am watching (well, listening to, mostly) The Overwatch League as we speak.

That is awesome. Yeah, I need to talk to a guy in a couple cities over who already has one up and running. I think he can give me a lot of the info I need to get started. I just haven't had a chance to chat with him yet.

That's awesome, I've never imagined esports would become such a thing! Having scholarships related to professional gaming sounds surreal, really cool.

I hope you have success on pushing forward this idea. It could help a lot of kids!

I think so too. We will see what happens with all of it. We are entering testing season, so it might get put on the back burner until the beginning of next year.

I've never been involved in an esports team, but the first think I can think of is cost.

Do you have the infrastructure to set-up an esports team and how much is it going to cost.

Will you travel or is everything going to be online?

Where is it located?

Is there any student interest?

Interest from other schools in the district or even across the state?

How would you fund the program? If ticket sales fund most sports would your venue be able to seat people or what's the legal issues with streaming the games online or putting them on YouTube?

I don't know if "UIL" was just a Texas thing, but I'm assuming your state has some sort of organization under which all extracurriculars are handled, what are their thoughts?

I think it's only a matter of time, and as an avid sports viewer of League of Legends think this is an incredible idea, so sorry I'm not much help from the advice category, but hopefully one of my question helped.

Some ideas on how to sell it maybe get parent's permission to let their kids stream or create content. You could go help them create a business and learn some side skills like video editing or branding.

I'm sure out of the scope of what you're wanting to do as a volunteer, but I have definitely imagined setting up a community "computer lab" for kids to play video games and build an online business streaming, creating content, or some of the many other opportunities. If money wasn't an issue I would already be doing this. I even imagined how I could set this up via Steem, as it already has a built-in "beneficiary" system and could have the lab open for free, but require anything created at the facility to make the facilities account a 5% beneficiary.

No worries, you actually helped a lot. You make a good point about the gate fees and how those might be mirrored in something where all matches are online. I have some grant opportunities available to me, so that might be one route I take. Equipment cost isn't that big of a deal to me. I can use my tech budget to work with that. We are a pretty small district with only one high school so that wouldn't apply either. I am going to check out the MHSAA site to see if they have any info.

I am gonna be no help here as the decades of gaming was guild based and never e-sports.

What I know is that you are being very progressive, and using your efforts to help youth and give them more opportunities in education. You will win big or learn and either of those things are worth it when helping students.

Make sure you post the story so we can follow and consult!

Thanks! I will do what I can. It might be something that doesn't happen until Fall. We will have to see.
