DIY Mothers Day Gift

Hi fellow Hiveians and DIY Enthusiasts,

Here today with another fun DIY but of a different flavor!

This one was in the spirit of Mother’s Day! I was only going to make a card using my computer. The little munchkin was with me because he’s always gotta be around. I can’t blame him, leaving a room is exciting still so I will take what I can get for attention from him while it lasts lol

So I had gone upstairs to do some ‘cleaning’ and have the little guy in tow. I try to do this on the weekends for a bit to give mama (@ssiena) a break, being a homeschool mom and professional mother, she doesn’t get much of a break except when I’m home, such as the weekends! (In normal times, I don’t get home from work until pretty late, still gives her time with me and our son but usually only like 2.5 hours) As an aside, I dislike these Hallmark holidays like Mother’s Day. It’s just an excuse to spend money nowadays more than it is about the actual thought about loving someone. I don’t need a designated day per year to appreciate my amazing wife, do it every single day!

We also enjoy doing things ourselves versus relying on others so naturally I was going to make her something instead of just going to the store and buying something. Fun fact, we did something similar for our wedding, we made it ourselves!

So several years ago my wife was on a crafting kick so we bought a Cricut machine. If you aren’t sure what it is, it’s a computer programmed cutter for various materials. You use a design or make your own and the computer transposes it onto the medium you are working with. It’s pretty awesome!

So back to the story earlier. I was upstairs and told the little one to be quiet but we are making mommy a Mother’s Day card. We spent a bunch of time picking two and went downstairs to get some water and the second he saw her he yelled ‘mommy we made you a mommas day card!!’ And let the cat right out of the bag lol oh well, he’s so excited with stuff like that I can’t blame him, it’s fun having surprises for people.

So naturally after a lot of laughter, she is wondering how I’m doing it, am I using the Cricut? I said no...but I would like to! In all the years owning it, only she’s used it so I wanted to give it a whirl.

The app is pretty self explanatory and easy. I need to get better at it for sure, I have an awesome idea for something I want to make now that I’ve got the hang of it! More to come on that later. I chose the flower below and made sure it fit 12 inches by 12 inches, the size of our Cricut.

Once I figured out the correct steps to actually get something cut... it was easy lol (you have to put the cutting mat down otherwise it doesn’t reach the cutting tip unless you force it, which would damage it, good thing I didn’t do that [especially after breaking the washing machine lol]). As you can see, it gets things loaded on the left then those rollers move the paper back and forth as the cutting head moves side to side. Pretty awesome machine now that I understand it!

Slightly hard to see but the whole thing is moving. The paper is getting cut under that blade on the right. The left side blade (which we don’t have) is for scoring, the right for cutting.

It’s a little hard to see here as well but you can almost make out near the white lines, you can see the line that’s cut in the paper. Thankfully my wife also loves to scrapbook, so we’ve got huge amounts of great card stock paper. This one was pretty cool so I picked it, I like the colors and waves of it.

Once you pull away the part you don’t want, you can see the pattern. It was really cool to see the end result from the machine. I’ll definitely be using it again!

What you have to do is start to roll it from the outside towards the middle. This will give the flower effect. I rolled it with the color on the outside instead of the inside, which I ended up liking.

Once you’re done rolling this is what it looks like! I think it came out pretty good. I ended up rolling it tight but then letting it unfold a bit so that it felt natural. There’s also the bottom you have to glue so it would look weird if it was tightly rolled like a cigar instead of a flower lol.

The last piece for this flower was to glue it to the little base. The base is the middle part that curves the other way, in the original cutout picture above. Makes a little flat seat for the flower, pretty cool!

I made another flower with the same paper only this time I made it really small.

The original intention was to do this, which I ended up doing but I also saw the bit of symbolism that was cool. The big flower is the parent and the small flower is the baby. Came to me as I was giving it to her, was pretty cool.

The total project we did, I was really happy with the results!
