Stripping

...paint.

Hi fellow Hiveians,

Who doesn’t like a good stripping? 😉 As the restrictions continue, one good thing to do is stay busy. Keeping busy keeps your mind engaged and not dwelling on doom and gloom. Thankfully there’s a lot to do when it comes to owning a property, even if it’s just a condo. You’re responsible for what goes on in your place. We’ve been preparing to sell the condo for over a year since we knew we would need to move, regardless of what’s been happening in the world.

One of the worst things we tried was painting the stairs. We removed the disgusting carpet on them a year and a half ago almost and had the bad idea of painting them a color instead of staining them their natural pine appearance. Even worse, we picked a dark grey color. Most home owners or real estate agents would cringe at the thought but the only way to learn sometimes is to make a mistake. Checked that box!

We thankfully are now in the process of getting rid of that paint. The saving grace is that it’s only one coat that was put on. Sanding it down to try to remove it was brutal, so that isn’t going to be worth the time. We grabbed this non-poisonous, supposedly eco-friendly paint stripper and are trying it out.

As you can see, that step was sanded instead of using paint stripper but didn’t work out as well as I would have liked. In comes the stripper product.

I was surprised at the consistency of it. I had only ever heard of using a liquid (ethylene?) paint thinning material before but that was like water. This stuff is odor free which is what we wanted since it’s hard to use a strong smelling thing like typical paint thinner. This stuff is the consistency of pudding almost, very interesting!

Have to get it out with a paint brush and brush it on. Not sure if the toxicity of it either so kept it safe and wore the typical protective gear. The little one tried to help as well, which is exactly why we also didn’t get one that was poisonous or smelly, he’s never far behind when I’m doing projects in the house. I can’t blame him, it’s fun to do but also something to actually do. It teaches him new words, concepts and keeps his mind engaged learning new things. We let him watch TV but whenever we can, revert to actually doing things with us and foster that curiosity.

The stuff comes out like mayonnaise when you put it down. It’s probably got some of the same ingredients of the cheap stuff I imagine lol it takes 3-24 hours to strip the paint off, really hoping that it works as advertised.

If we could get the stairs stripped from the paint we mistakenly put on it, that would help us get one additional thing good to go. Owning property certainly has its benefits when you’ve got a lot of time on your hands. It isn’t for everyone, like those who don’t like or know how to do work but for me, it’s definitely keeping me busy, which in turn keeps the little one busy. I’ll take that!

If you look around your immediate surroundings for things to do, you can definitely find things to do. Don’t sit and binge watch episodes, getting away from the TV will keep you sane, make time go by and give you satisfaction if you complete things. If you don’t know where to start, try that one small thing that’s been bothering you for a bit but haven’t tried. Got a bunch of holes in the walls from nails and nicks? It’s easy to fix if you watch a video or two and dirt cheap! Small things like that will keep your mind engaged and I think you’ll really like it. Let me know if you’ve got something you want to try in the comments, I would love to hear about it.

Stay positive!

Paint stripper is such a bastard. You're right about DIY though.. it can keep the wolves at bay. Dying to go home and do stuff on our home!!!

It’s good to keep busy. Some days @ssiena wants to just relax but I don’t do well with that lol never have. If there’s projects to do I’ll be tinkering to work on them.

Looking forward, in some ways, to having a house. Lots to keep me busy and show our son what to do! He loves helping me, I hope that continues lol
