Expectation Vs Reality for Productivity

Today when everything is fast-paced everyone wants to set high expectations for them or for their subordinated because they feel that keeping high expectations will increase productivity eventually. Now the problem with this is that people tend to lose confidence because they have set high expectations for them and thus in reality that was not feasible.

I will just give you an example, I have set a high expectation on myself that I will be losing 5 Kg in 15 days at the start of the lockdown. Now it's not a high expectation for many because losing 5 kg is feasible, but for me, it was as there was a lockdown, I could not go to the gym or for a jog. And I failed miserably because I can only lose 0.5 kg in fifteen days and also lost my confidence because of the unrealistic expectations. If I would have set an expectation of losing 2 kg in a week than even if I lose 1 kg in a month, I would be super happy because 50% of the expectations have met, but in my case, it was around 10%.

The problem with these generations is that we compare ourselves to others, like what they have accomplished and their results (not their hard work though). Along with that, we become harsh on ourselves to attain the same and thus eventually we forget that not everyone is the same. What we actually do, is to set a realistic target and thus we should be celebrating small wins daily because in that way we are enjoying the process. When I started learning Coding, I was fascinated by great websites or games, and I wanted to build a game in like 6 months of my coding journey. It was the high expectation, but again what I actually have done is that I enjoyed coding and thus started creating small games which used to be completed in like 1-2 weeks. And I used to show it to my friends and thus eventually I was celebrating those. Though I have not created a game which will be used by millions but still created small games to show it to my friends.

Now there is a big difference in Coding as well as Losing Weight especially for me, for both I have set high expectations but doing coding I eventually celebrated my progress whereas while losing weight I actually lost confidence. One of the reasons for it is that we should manage our expectations, and thus we should be a focus on what we are doing and eventually celebrate the wins daily. When I am working on some big tasks at my office, we have been suggested that we should create sub-task for that big tasks and those sub-tasks should be like how much you can do in one day. And when we complete that sub-tasks in one day we get a sense that we can complete the tasks on time. This should be done in our real life too. When we are setting expectations we should try to break it to daily, that if we can accomplish this much daily that means we can accomplish that much in a month or year. And we should work hard to complete that task in a day, no matter what.

Similarly, if I would have done the small success for my losing weight, I wouldn't have lost confidence. The issue is with the starting small and thus eventually build on that or the minimum daily target to accomplish every day. This should be done in every field like if you are learning new things, learn every day, if you are coding, code every day etc. When we focus on small goals we actually build the greater self-confidence and thus with great confidence we can try to achieve the bigger targets. This will eventually increase productivity as well as positivity and thus you will eliminate failure. Because failure does not exist anymore, it is just a step backwards where you just take feedback of the situation and thus you will be the best person to know how to respond to that situation.

So to start with, take smaller steps like a task or tow which can be completed in a day and thus you need to be very careful in doing that daily task. Celebrate your daily success by doing anything which you want to do. Practice it every day without fail. Try to challenge yourself in doing it every single day. Don't be harsh on yourself if you skip a day, not every day is same so if you miss a day then you should keep a track of it and thus eventually move forward in continuing it from the very next day.

Breaking down long-term goals to smaller pieces (mid-term goals), and even smaller pieces (short-term), make them more achievable... And as you are accomplishing these small goals, you are getting more motivated to keep doing them!

On the other side, high expectations (high goals in your case) can have a demotivating effect when they are not reached... I have sometimes problems with too high expectation from my coworkers... And that can have even worse effect, but I try to re-adjust that thing...

That's absolutely correct, it's always better to take small steps to reach the end goal

Nice story to explain why goals should be SMART ( "specific," "measurable," "attainable," "relevant," and "time-bound." )

Great article and good points about having to high of expectations. I agree with @ph1102's comment in that breaking down your long term goals into manageable short term goals you will see results happening and will be less disouraged. Thanks for this good content, keep moving forward.

Thanks for the comment, yes smart goals is what we actually need and those smart goals should be as small as possible so that it can be acheivable
