The psychology of easing lockdown restrictions

All around the world countries are in lockdown due to the Covid-19 pandemic - some have more extreme measures than others. It is coming to the point now where some countries are looking to ease the lockdowns and get their economies moving again. What does that mean for the everyday citizen?

Humans are, by nature very social beings. I feel it will be hard for countries to ease the lockdowns and keep people from heading off and seeing families and friends they havent seen in months and potentially spreading the virus again. We do need to ease back into normality, otherwise the virus will flare up again in no time, and countries will end up in lockdown again. Most countries will still limit mass gatherings, but it will be much harder to restrict smaller social gatherings, which could still be a great place for the virus to spread. I know personally I wont be extending my social circle to much when the lockdown eases, and wont be seeing anyone at risk as it is just not worth it!

Humans also like to question authority and not be told what to do, which makes lockdowns difficult. It will be probably more difficult coming out of lockdown as the lines between what is OK and not OK to do will become blurred and it will be harder to police. For example in New Zealand, during our strict lockdown (essentially stay at home unless you are an essential worker or exercising near your home) there were people out fishing, surfing and mountain biking. All these activities put others at harm - first responders if they get into any problems. Imagine what it will become as countries ease restrictions and it all becomes more complicated - it will be very hard to police! I know many people dont believe it, but most governments are doing the best they can for the health and economy of their citizens.

Not everyone has the same opinion about this virus - some think it is very serious and others think it is no worse than the common flu. This also makes it hard as not everyone is on the same page, and some are very relaxed about it all while others will remain anxious for months to come. I am not here to argue about the virus itself, but to explore what the easing of lockdown will mean for individuals.

Although the majority of the world has been doing well with complying, I still wouldnt rule out mass riots in the future around this. Especially as many people are struggling financially, and some will be asked to keep their businesses closed while others will be able to open their doors again.

Here in New Zealand we are still in strict lockdown until atleast the middle of next week. Our government is making an announcement about whether the lockdown will be extended or lifted next monday, so we anxiously await that.

Stay safe everyone. It is a strange time right now, but try and enjoy it as much as you can 😃
