avatar

5 minutes from Porto airport is Leça da Palmeira, for many people consider it the most beautiful land in Portugal, in fact it is a very beautiful land with a lot to visit. This is whoever has a flight and wants to go earlier this can be a very good going before the flight if you arrive earlier than the scheduled.
It is a land with an incredible avenue with many tourist and historical points to visit.
Today I will talk a little about this land and its monuments.
The land belongs to the district of Porto inserted in the city of Matosinhos.
Unfortunately we don't have a metro in those areas and the only way to get there is by car or bus.

Today I bring you one of the main icons of the Local (tidal pool )

The pool that has been a work of art for 50 years
The Câmara de Matosinhos only wanted to build a swimming pool. Until Siza Vieira took the project and created a monument - Piscina das Marés.

Classified as a National Monument since 2011, the Tidal Pool of Leça da Palmeira was supposed to be a simple salt water tank, but Álvaro Siza Vieira's genius turned it into a fundamental work of Portuguese architecture.

Unanimously highlighted by the importance it acquired in the creative journey of the then young architect from Matosinhense, Piscina das Marés, opened in 1966 and owned by the Municipality of Matosinhos, embodies an approach that underlines the relationship between the artificial and the natural.

The history of Piscina das Marés
The history of Piscina das Marés, one of the most emblematic works by the Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza Vieira, begins 20 years earlier, with a letter from the Câmara de Matosinhos, committed at the time to recover the importance of the area as a seaside resort. In March 196o, the municipality assumes, by the penalty of civil engineer Bernardo Ferrão, that “the construction of a salt water pool near the beach of Leça (…) is an old aspiration”, and that the time had come for materialize. Budget: 200 thousand escudos.

Once the site was chosen, in a depression that had saved a lot of work in excavations, in November 1959 the municipality decided to contact a public works company, specialized in maritime works. However, in the course of a project that was thought simple, the need arises to think about the urban framework of the work with the surrounding landscape. At this stage, a 26-year-old young architect is called. Bernardo Ferrão knew Siza Vieira from collaborations with his brother, the architect Fernando Távora.

Two of the first decisions were to build a children's tank and give up the idea of waiting for the sea to come and go. To comply with hygiene rules, the pool would be filled with sea water, yes, but treated. On March 25, 1960, 10 days after the letter with the descriptive memory, the National Information Secretary, Moreira Baptista, paid a visit to the place where the Tidal Pool was to be built, as we know it today. The work was part of a larger strategy to make Leça da Palmeira a strong bathing attraction. In addition to the inauguration of the Boa Nova Tea House, the opening of the movable bridge over the Port of Leixões in 1959, which connected Leça to Matosinhos, is worth mentioning.

50 years later, Piscina das Marés remains in operation
In the second phase, concerns came about the attached facilities, that is, the changing rooms, the toilets and also the intention to build a restaurant that, due to lack of means, ended up being replaced by a cafeteria. For the construction, the architect makes his predilection for simplicity and concrete clear: “Buildings built with decreed concrete walls and wooden cover, covered with copper plate, on asphalt screens.”

50 years later, Piscina das Marés remains in operation and continues to be cited as one of the most emblematic works in the career of the architect who also designed the Serralves Museum, in Porto, the Museum for the Iberê Camargo Foundation, in Porto Alegre , in Brazil, or the Galician Center for Contemporary Art.

Siza Vieira, Tidal Pool and Leça da Palmeira
Siza Vieira designed the Boa-Nova Tea House shortly before, almost simultaneously with the Quinta da Conceição Pool, in the late 1960s. The Architecture course at the Porto School of Fine Arts had been completed in 1955, what makes these monuments some of the young architect's first works. The initial idea of the Municipality of Matosinhos was, in fact, to build a tank, powered by the coming and going of the neighboring Atlantic Ocean.
