Baiturrahman Grand Mosque is a mosque located in downtown Banda Aceh, Aceh Province, Indonesia. Baiturrahman Grand Mosque is a symbol of religion, culture, spirit, strength, struggle, and nationalism of the people of Aceh. This mosque is a landmark of Banda Aceh since the era of the Sultanate of Aceh and survived the tsunami disaster on December 26, 2004.
Masjid Raya Baiturrahman adalah sebuah Masjid yang terletak di pusat kota Banda Aceh, Provinsi Aceh, Indonesia. Masjid Raya Baiturrahman adalah simbol agama, budaya, semangat, kekuatan, perjuangan dan nasionalisme rakyat Aceh. Masjid ini adalah landmark Banda Aceh sejak era Kesultanan Aceh dan selamat dari bencana tsunami pada 26 Desember 2004 silam.
The original Masjid Raya was built in 1612 during the reign of Sultan Iskandar Muda. There are also those who say that the original Baiturrahman Grand Mosque was built earlier in 1292 by Sultan Alaidin Mahmudsyah. The original Royal Mosque features a multi-layered thatched roof which is a distinctive feature of Aceh's architecture.
Masjid Raya yang asli dibangun pada tahun 1612 di masa pemerintahan Sultan Iskandar Muda. Ada juga yang mengatakan bahwa Masjid Raya Baiturrahman yang asli dibangun lebih awal pada tahun 1292 oleh Sultan Alaidin Mahmudsyah. Masjid Kerajaan yang asli menampilkan atap jerami berlapis-lapis yang merupakan fitur khas arsitektur Aceh.
When the Dutch East Indies invaded the Sultanate of Aceh on April 10, 1873, the people of Aceh used the original Raya Mosque as a battle fortress and attacked Royal Dutch troops from inside the mosque. Royal Dutch troops retaliated by firing flares at the mosque's thatched roof, which caused the mosque to catch fire.
Ketika Kolonial Hindia Belanda menyerang Kesultanan Aceh pada 10 April 1873, masyarakat Aceh menggunakan Masjid Raya yang asli sebagai benteng pertempuran, dan menyerang pasukan Royal Belanda dari dalam masjid. Pasukan Royal Belanda pun membalas dengan menembakkan suar ke atap jerami masjid, yang menyebabkan masjid terbakar.
General Van Swieten also promised local leaders that he would rebuild the Great Mosque and create a warm place for apologies. In 1879 the Dutch rebuilt the Baiturrahman Mosque as a gift and to reduce the anger of the people of Aceh.
Jendral Van Swieten pun menjanjikan pemimpin lokal bahwa dia akan membangun kembali Masjid Raya dan menciptakan tempat yang hangat untuk permintaan maaf. Pada tahun 1879 Belanda membangun kembali Masjid Baiturrahman sebagai pemberian dan untuk mengurangi kemarahan rakyat Aceh.
Construction began in 1879, when the first stone was laid by Tengku Qadhi Malikul Adil, who later became the first imam of the new Masjid Raya, and was completed on December 27, 1881, during the reign of Aceh's last Sultan, Muhammad Daud Syah.
Konstruksi dimulai pada tahun 1879, ketika batu pertama diletakkan oleh Tengku Qadhi Malikul Adil, yang kemudian menjadi imam pertama di Masjid Raya baru ini, dan diselesaikan pada 27 Desember 1881 ketika masa pemerintahan Sultan terakhir Aceh, Muhammad Daud Syah.
Many Acehnese initially refused to worship at the new Baiturrahman Grand Mosque because it was built by the Dutch, who were originally their enemies. But now this mosque has become the pride of the Aceh community.
Banyak orang Aceh yang awalnya menolak untuk beribadah di Masjid Raya Baiturrahman yang baru ini karena dibangun oleh orang Belanda, yang awalnya merupakan musuh mereka. Namun sekarang Masjid ini telah menjadi kebanggaan Masyarakat Aceh.

Last year was the last time I had visited one of the historical tourist destinations of the people of Aceh, besides being a place of worship, the Baiturrahman Grand Mosque was indeed known as one of the local destinations that must be visited by the community if it was already in the Capital of Aceh, the city of Banda Aceh.
Tahun lalu adalah terakhir kalinya saya pernah berkunjung ke salah satu destinasi wisata sejarah masyarakat Aceh ini, selain sebagai tempat ibadah, Mesjid Raya Baiturrahman memang dikenal sebagai salah satu destinasi lokal yang wajib dikunjungi oleh masyrakatnya jika sudah berada di Ibukota Aceh, kota Banda Aceh.
This is a kind of local wisdom that has been passed down from generation to generation, not only praying but capturing a few moments in the mosque of the pride of the people of Aceh is one of the things done by the community.
Ini adalah semacam kearifan lokal yang mentradisi secara turun temurun, bukan saja berdoa, namun mengabadikan beberapa moment di mesjid kebanggan masyrakat Aceh ini adalah salah satu hal yang dilakukan oleh masyrakatnya.
