Working from home! Already 14 consecutive months!

The client I am working for, did close down the office on the 13th of March 2020. But within the team we already decided from the 1st of March to take turns in working from home. Since I was one of the first I did start working from home since the beginning of March. This all of course due to the Covid crisis.

I was used to work 1 day per week from home. But an entire week was a different cup of tea! I was already used to digital meetings due to working a day per week from home, but no real live contact with the colleagues is strange.
Luckily the first week, the kids were at school and the wife at work. So, I did had enough time to get used to it!

But then the work of the wife decided that homework became mandatory.

So it was cosy with the wife around the dining table. Did I know that she had meetings for about 7 to 8 hours per day? No I didn't!

Suddenly the complete lockdown was forced. So not only 2 people doing their work, but also 2 kids had online classes (in best case).
So it started to get crowded at the dining table!

So desk investments were needed! We bought 2 desks at that time, but it did had a long delivery date. This happens when you do want to pay too much :)

We placed a desk at the oldest his bedroom and on a central in the house.

The problem for me personally was that those desks weren't deep enough. So after the beginning of 2021, a new investment round was needed. I did set up my office space at a small spare room in the house!

And this is where I am working since feb 2021. But already steadily working for 14 months from home. Didn't see a colleague in real life! Didn't went to the office, nor the client's one, not the one of the company I do work for. the only thing I need to purchase is a good office chair!

For sure there are some advantages, just like there are lots of disadvantages. But I do know that we won't be back at the office for 5 days in the week after all of this is over. I do guess that it will be max 3 days a week at the office and the other 2 from home, which I consider a great mix!

So, what is your home office? And have you already been to the office?

Cheers,
Peter

Very similar experience for me. I put some money on a good screen and an office chair as well.
I think 3 days at the office and 2 at home would be a nice addition in the future.

I did use an ipad stand to stand the laptop in. Could use a better monitor but it is fine as it is now!

My office went virtual to test it to see if it could be done, before the week test was done, everyone was sent to remote work. After a year, I got a new chair, because the old one eventually caused me a lot of discomfort. I hope to continue to work remote and so does my boss. At most, we only want to be forced to go to the office 1 time in every 2 weeks.

This will be a complete new situation after COVID. Companies will save a lot of offices.
I do miss it for some meeting being physically together. Body language says a lot more than a face expression!

LOL...yeah... body language does give off more than just a avatar or a shoulders up view.

The biggest two pro's for me out weigh any negatives

  1. Ability to play my music without headphones
  2. Nobody walking in and having a long loud discussion with someone else in a nearby cube

A standing desk and ergonomic chair go a long way...hardly miss the office at all. Yeah, most offices here looking to do either a 3-2 split or alternate weeks.
