Hello everyone, did you check out the live drawing class on BBC Channel 4 yesterday? This episode was two hours long and you could draw along live while the artists on the show drew the same pose. It taught some basics in figure drawing such as proportions, foreshortening, tone and composition. I thought it was good for a beginner watching the show however, I found the teachers on the show too technical by focusing on contour drawing without mentioning gesture drawing which I find more important. They may cover it in future.

This was a starting exercise of 3 minutes to draw a pose displayed on the screen. This particular one was the statue David which is different to the model the artists were drawing from.

The next exercise you were given 12 minutes to complete and they wanted more of a focus on either hands or feet within the figure drawing.

This next lesson was on foreshortening the human figure and the importance of perspective. This was the drawing I did based on the photo of the model on screen. You were allowed 15 minutes for this one.

This exercise was all about tone. You were told to cover you paper in charcoal so that it was all black and using your charcoal/graphite stick go over the areas of the figure that have darker tones by pressing harder and use a rubber to create the lighter tones in the figure.

There was another exercise after this that was based on composition and story telling. You were given about 20-25 minutes to complete it.

I found the episode entertaining with a clever idea that you could join along. If you like drawing or want to learn it's worth checking it out. Drawing from a screen is not the same as drawing from life of course but you can still learn many things along the way.

Thanks for checking out the post and hope you try the exercises yourself!

That sounds very interesting, I remember such course when you had to do quick sketch and given such short time so that people do not concentrate so long on the fine details but see the object as a whole and pay attention to distinct features. That is a lot of fun, Like how you made David, immediately recognizable pose, like the sitting person, really nicely done legs, the laying person, the feet done so well. Feet and hands are two difficult anatomically parts of human body. Nice exercise :)

Thanks. Yes that sounds like gesture drawing when seeing the object as a whole and I also find hands and feet difficult to draw if it is on a small scale and graphite stick is not sharp enough. :)
