A long overdue stroll along the seafront, UK

Today is the first day I've been out for a proper walk since returning to UK. It feels so good to walk around freely as I know it's considered a luxury in many parts of the world at the moment.

Having being born and bred here for half of my life (the other half living in London and abroad), I realised that I rarely go for a proper walk along the seafront. The last time was when I was back two years ago. It was so cold that day I didn't stay around long. Today was a beautiful day, the skies were so clear blue that I would have hugged it if I could.

THE GRAND PIER

The Grand Pier was first built in 1903 and was burnt down twice, the last time being in 2008. It's such a pity that they've rebuilt a modern futuristic one, removing all my childhood memories. Those were the days when my parents bought me here. I remember I was clutching my pennies in one hand ready to play on the arcade games, and my favourite 99 in the other hand. 99 is an ice cream in a cone with a chocolate flake stuck on top. No one goes to a seaside town in England without having a 99.

WESTON EYE

An observation wheel was installed on the seafront in recent years. It's 40 meters high, nearly one third the height of London Eye. On the rare occasions I've walked past, I can't say I've ever seen anyone on it, but then these are rare occasions. I'm pretty sure one would get a good view of Wales just across the Bristol Channel, as well as Steep Holm.

STEEM HOLM

Steep Holm is a small island nearby and forms part of UK's line of defence in the 18th century. Ever since I found out about it, I've been wanting to visit the island. Hopefully I will get to do it this time I am back home.

THE BEACH FRONT

One thing I never really noticed even when I lived here, were the many shelters dotted along the seafront. They're old, almost antique old and very quaint. I could almost imagine how grand they would have looked during its heydays. I wished the local council could give it a bit more TLC to bring them back to their previous glory.

Instead, now we have these modern seats along the seafront. To be honest, I actually quite like them. They change subtly from benches to seats and looks like a fish, which I think is very fitting for a sea side town. Also, they blend in well with the road and pavement.

One of the things we are famous for is having one of the highest tidal range in the world. The tidal range is the difference in the height of the highest and lowest tide. Sometimes this cause flooding in the area. Last week the high tide caused flooding along the seafront moving some of the beach huts away from their original spots. The squares on the pavement are where the huts were supposed to be. The ones on the right have been moved aside for safety, but there are still a few out of its place, and more scattered along the promenade.

On the way back, I walked down onto the beach. Our beach is also famous for being very muddy. I think that's also got something to do with the high tidal range. And that's why we're not very popular with tourists. After all, who wants to come to play and sunbathe in a muddy beach.

The stroll along the promenade and back on the beach took about an hour and a half. By the time I finished, it was past lunch time. Chips made from fresh potatoes is something that I haven't had in a while. Mustn't forget my cuppa.
