Time to prune and find new followings

(Edited)

My feed has been rather quiet lately and often I find my VP sitting at 90%+. I have some accounts on auto vote because I know they produce quality, but mainly I like to do manual curation, especially when I'm curation for Pinmapple. My curation return is at 11.6%, not a terrific return because I don't play the curation game. And based on the latest Hive Engagaement League produced by @abh12345, I barely make 2.26 Hive curation rewards per 1000 HP. The top of the leader board makes 4.82!!!

TIME TO PRUNE

Today I decided to take a look at my following. I follow 313 people and it's been at the 300ish mark for a while. A lot of the people I follow haven't posted for a long time, some even from as far back as last year. There were some names that I don't recognise at all, it's probably because I saw a good post and followed them, but never had any engagement with them. It's a bit like my contacts on LinkedIn. Sometimes I look at my feed and think who the hell is that?

I figured since the year is coming up, it's a good time to tidy things up and prune my followings. Most of them won't be offended because they're not active at all. Others I followed during my early days because they are whales. We all do that when we start out. In reality, following a whale rarely gets you on their radar for that juicy upvote as they have thousands of other followers. So I'm sure these whales won't be offended by me unfollowing them. There are some inactive users that I am still following for sentimental reasons, especially if they're haven't powered down to zero. Maybe there's a chance they will come back one day and I'd like to know. In the end, I pruned 20% of my users and now I'm following 247 people.

WHAT NEXT?

Time to follow more people I guess, that's what started all this off.

I think there might be some people I support and engage with but don't necessarily follow. That's not intentional. I always see their posts on the Pinmapple community so it's like I am already following them. Some of the people I follow reshares quite a lot of content so there's another group that I support but don't follow.

If it helps, I'm not really into Crypto or gaming, or single image posts (sorry guys and gals). Soft content ie something that my little simple brain can handle easily would be great as Hive is where I come to relax and chill out. By the way, I created a new community called Toys on Hive recently, please do check it out 😊

Toys on Hive.png

I am no whale so my support probably won't make that much difference to one's post payout, but I guess every little helps if you're not too fussy. Christmas is coming, perhaps you can do some of your following, and myself a good deed.

Can you recommend any quality authors that I can follow please? Asking nicely 😀

Congrats on the Toys on Hive Community, I will check it out. It's that time of year when my inner child is at an all-time high.

It depends what floats your boat. We are living in a world of diminishing HIVE authors now, but there are some left.

Nothing too heavy as I have limited brain cells nowadays and they're not very active.

I know what you mean about diminishing Hive authors, it's rare to pick up any good authors when I take a random look at the feed

@khazrakh always puts a lot of effort in his posts, and I tend to read them (and not skim). It's always about crypto though, not travel.

@dannenewton is from the Lincolnshire area, and someone else I follow. He's into insects but I prefer his HIVE ambitions and problems with weight loss posts.

@gungunkrishu does a lot of crypto posts.., again I read them. They add value.

I would say anything over 2 per 1000 HP is pretty good for a mostly manual curator - you are still ahead of inflation (currently at around 8.5% I think).

That's good to know! I don't think I can do the serious manual curation game as I simply can't afford to check in all the time, takes the fun out of things for me. Hopefully if I spread the love around a bit more might help. Let's see

A couple of travellers there I recognise, which I'm probably not following because I curate them all the time. Will definitely check out the others as I want a more diverse following so I'm reading more genres. Thanks for the recommendation.

A little diversity never hurts I guess. I tend not to follow people that do not all have the same content...I like a little variety.

That's for sure, I'm seeing different types of posts from these authors that I don't normally see on my feed. Thanks for the recommendation

You're welcome. There's more but I figure you may have seen them already as they are well-established.

Thanks for the recommendation, Galen. Much appreciated it. @livinguktaiwan often curates my travel post on Haveyoubeenhere 😉. I'm also checking and reducing my following as when I first joined I just pressed following everyone without knowing they are a bot, whale, non-active users,..😆
I really enjoy reading recent story https://peakd.com/hive-174578/@proteancreator/my-grandma-and-her-joints from @proteancreator . I guess you will like @livinguktaiwan :P))

Youré on the I curate but haven't followed list @trangbaby but that's changed now!

The follow for follow culture used to be really when we started a few years ago, we had tonnes of people asking for follow me and I'll follow you back, it was crazy and many people, myself to a certain extent ended up following lots of rubbish accounts. Luckily that doesn't seem to happen much on Hive now.

And thanks for your recommendation, I may have come across that post the other.

Aww thanks @livinguktaiwan for your kind words and such a great inspiration :)) Highly appreciated it. I'm not really a professional blogger as I never write before even my language; however, I have started writing since I joined Hive. Its been great experience and engagement with people on this platform :))

Hey, G-Dog! Thanks for the reference. Remind me to buy you a beer if we ever meet in real life!

Lol, well I'd never presume to remind someone to buy me a beer, it's not my style; However, I'd be happy to drink one if you happen to remember to do so.

Ha, ha, ha. It is something I tend to say when people are nice to me. It could be a beer or something else. This is a sort of tradition I started when a lot of my friends started graduating from college.

Yeah, I say the same here...I just omit the remind part.

Hey ya. You and I have known each other for a while and I always value your posts and interaction. And I just followed you today. I'm a schlub with roughly the same number of people that I follow. At least 250 of them are mostly inactive, but I leave them in my list because if the ever do come back I WANT TO KNOW.

I have always added carefully to my list and pruned relentlessly when needed. I too could use a few more, but when my VP gets too high for my comfort I manually curate like a maniac.

I don't play the game at all. I want to support good content and don't care the rewards.

I have a list at the end of every post. A couple of them are less than real active, but worth the time to read. Every time they publish.

Seems like you and I have the same view towards curation, and I didn't realise I wasn't following you either, even though we have interacted so often 😀

Now you mention it, I do recall seeing you recommend authors at the end of your post. I think that's a great way to pick up new following - from people you trust. Thanks I will check them out in future

Yay! I made the cut!

happy dance

I scrolled through quickly to make sure I'm not recommending anyone you're already following, but given how my brain is/isn't working today, I'll probably recommend people you already do, and forgot those you don't! 😂

I've been a wicked slacker as far as engagement goes here on the blockchain - I think I need to find a better balance between shilling on Twitter & hanging with my Hive friends. Speaking of, see you at Hive Fest!😊

Superwoman Traci, if there is a Hive social butterfly contest, I'm sure you will come out top, I don't know where you find the time and energy. Kudos to you.

Thank you for your recommendations, quite a few names I recognise and some I know I'm following yet.

I need to have a look at my list. I am popping over thanks to @traciyork. Some of the folk I'd recommend have already been mentioned....

I do a combination of manual and autovoting. I admit to relying on Gina in case my VP drops and the autovote doesn't happen. I use that because I am human and need to be AFK 🤣

It's a nightmare finding decent stuff to read these days. Everyone seems to be rehashing crap to post on Leo.
As primarily a reader, it's all a bit disconcerting.
Never mind. We carry on :-)

That's why I give up reading stuff now. When I go on the main feed, a lot of it is low effort single images some which are so blurry that even my 3 year old great niece can do better

hmm so i post a lot on leofinance but not too deep economic things, it's quite easy to chew as i am bored with more "advanced stuff" I also started writing about travel stuff as you know by now and i am into movies as well!

Now i don't have a particular name to say, check the ones i follow if you aren't bored surely you will find someone worth following!

You inspired me to prune my follow list. It was rather sad to see old friends that have not posted all year, but it feels good to make that list lighter!

I feel sad to see old friends drop off as well, that's life I guess ☹️

But then, it's also good to meet more new people.

Shoot nobody is recommending me hahahaha is that because they don’t like my single photo posts hahah well dear I think there are a few great women blogging in the #ladiesofhive community. New ladies that deserve some help , you decide which ladies you have 50+ spots available 😉 stay safe
I will be doing some prime pruning now too
