Guaranteeing the protection of the rights of women at home brings about a lot of factors, things that should be considered in order to encourage gender equality. By so doing, this could lead to a better perspective, proper application, and promotion of the rights of women not only at home but in our society.

It has been the cry of many women all over the world to be given equal rights and be protected. It cannot be denied that there are still lots of places outside the Philippines wherein women are not accorded with the protection of their rights even while at home.

This means that there are a lot of women who are not safe even with family members around, instead of having such thoughts and knowing that their family is a safe space for them to express themselves.

In fact, according to 2018 research from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, 6 out of 10 women are murdered by an intimate partner or a family member. 137 women are killed every day by people they know.

This is the reason why home becomes the most dangerous place for women, especially in Africa and the Americas. Although studies also show that Asia comes third in cases of female victims of intimate partner/family-related homicide.

Certainly, gender-related killings of women and girls remain a serious problem across the regions, it is considered as the most extreme form of violence against women, an issue that has to be addressed in order to curb the incidents of homicide with the very own family members being the perpetrator.

And to make our home safe for women, each and every one of us should help in ensuring or promoting gender equality, to empower women, and thereby ensure the protection of women’s rights.

Now to ensure the protection of women’s rights at home, it should start with the children. I mean for me children should be educated about gender equality in various ways.

Gender equality should begin at home and obviously, each member of the family is at the front lines of change. Older family members should be role models and should show the children role model from various genders. This way children will be encouraged to embrace diversity.

How do we do it? One way is to simply talk to your kids about women’s rights and gender equality. As parents or older siblings, we should act as an example, children are like sponges they take things from what they see and observe in their surroundings. We should talk to them about gender roles regularly.

In addition, we should teach them to eliminate unconscious gender biases, roles that people assumed based on our society’s set expectations about how men and women should behave or dress and even on what kind of work a man or a woman should do.
I am happy that in the Philippines these things are slowly been eradicated, women now indulged themselves in work that was only performed by men in the past.

I remember when I joined SM Department Store many years back, my senior manager asked me if I won’t be intimidated having a female boss, my answer was it is perfectly fine with me. For I really don’t mind, for me women have full abilities as men and even exceed in most cases.

Similarly, by simply sharing or dividing all the house works, from cooking to cleaning equally among the children, would teach them that indeed they all share equal rights, and equal skills or competencies. They should grow in an environment wherein men and women are equal in all aspects.

Finally, we should listen and learn from the children. Young people around the world are stepping up for gender equality. They became bolder in speaking out about the issues or concerns affecting them. Malala and Greta are only two of them, advocating for youth education and encouraging us to take climate action respectively.

Indeed, young people have a lot to contribute to the conversation on human rights or gender equality, we just have to listen to them, empower them to speak out.

Doing all those simple steps could make the children a feminist which I find beneficial for their future own respective families, in ensuring the protection of women’s rights in every home.

(KEEP SAFE EVERYONE AND GOD BLESS!)
