Hello Hivers,

Plantain farming is not just what they call it by name there is a lot to it to be done by the farmer. The planting of the viable sucker, the wetting if their is shortage of water supply, the weeding techniques, the proning and sometimes the transplanting of the young ones again.

Being a plantain farmer is not a day job by practical experience but with a slow and steady practicing with patience. I started this farming work as a career more than 12 years ago before my dad was late, I began to believe in myself and what I do to survive more before I even dream to become a family man and also to train my wife how to become a real time farmer too.

When harvesting a plantain from its tree naturally, it should be done professionally without any damage what so ever. There are some few things you need to know before you harvest a plantain from its tree.

Things You Need To Know About Plantain Maturity.

There are some few signs you need to put into consideration before you conclude that this particular plantain is very matured for harvest.

  • The flower portion of the plantain will turn brownish or get dried. This is the first thing you need to find out yourself on the tree before getting it down and harvest.

  • Secondly, you need to see that all the leaves are dried, this is applied to every plantain tree either during the dry season or wet season. You need to see that all the greenish part of the tree get dried.

  • Thirdly, the plantain itself will look more bigger and presentable to the eyes, although in some cases you need to check it and double-check when its the dry season. Some part of the country seems not good enough when the dry season comes. Alternative cases.

Plantain is different from bananas, take note of that although in the same category of species. They look alike when grown but different when fully matured. It is good to eat plantain unriped because it gives alot of Nutrients to the body while unriped.

  • Iron
  • Phosphorus and more is extremely exclusive in the unriped plantain.
