Splinterlands | Enchanted Defender | More Armor Than Health

avatar

Introduction

All you Splinterlands players, today we will look at the Enchanted Defender. Enchanted who, you ask? Well, I wouldn’t blame you for not looking at this interesting monster in the common list way down below the others. You can be forgiven for not using it too, as was the case with me. But for the sake of trying it, I did, and you will be surprised at the outcomes. We will come to that in a moment.

The first time I played Splinterlands, a little over a year ago, the only thing that caught my attention was the armor that this monster had. But even for newbies like me, the health value was too small to take into a battle. Back then, I did not know about the magic attack passes through the armor and takes the monster in one go. Imagine if I hadn’t known that, there would be no way that I would take the Defender.

We’ll see the Defender in battle, but let’s first understand what Splinterlands is all about for the sake of newbies.

Shall we?

What Game is Splinterlands?

Well, it is one of the earliest blockchain-based collectible games. Though I started playing the game quite late, I should have had gotten going early in hindsight. Anyway, no need to despair. There are so many opportunities no matter when you start.

Splinterlands is a digital card game that allows you to collect, trade, battle, rent, and even earn on the cards. It is one of the most generous games that I have seen where cards, potions, Dark Energy Crystals (DEC. Cryptocurrency) are given out every day to thousands of players for just playing and winning daily quests. And there are tournaments or guilds that you can join.

Just to give you an idea of a few of the uber-expensive cards, take a look at this recent purchase of Prince Julian at USD 3500.

Enchanted Defender | More Enchanted Than Defender

Well, the Enchanted Defender is a monster with numerous ones. It has a health value of 1, speed 1, and attack value of 1. That puts it in a tricky situation of being attacked by the opposing monsters unabated to take down its armor in no time. And if it is a magic monster attacking, the Defender would be gone in a jiffy.

So, how do we explain the use of this monster in a battle? There are situations and circumstances where it coasts through. You want proof, don’t you? That’s exactly what I am going to show you.

Let’s go.

Enchanted Defender in Battle

The best proof of the usefulness of the Enchanted Defender can only be seen in battle. So, let’s have a look at it. Trust me, you will see be surprised. I know I was. 😊

The Face-Off Zone

Both the opponent and I went for the Fire Splinter. My monsters are on the lower half of the screen.

The Defender stands well guarded. However, the opponent's magic attack would be the only problem. If you look at my strategy, the Magnor with the taunt ability will hold the opponent’s focus for some time. The Lord of Fire, providing an increase in health for all friendly monsters, is another advantage for the Enchanted Defender.

So, it should be an interesting battle. Let’s see how it goes.

-------------------------******-------------------------------

The Battle Begins

One of the observations was that the opponent’s monsters were all level 2 to 4, while mine was the base-level ones. That gave the opponent quite a firepower.

However, the Magnor stood his ground quite well and consumed the opponent’s Cerberus. But that soon brought the opponent’s Fineas Rage to the front. The Fineas soon took my Magnor but not before sustaining some grievous injuries.

After the Magnor, my Fineas, at superior health, was fighting the opponent’s hammer and tongs.

The Battle Races to Conclusion

But here’s where things started to get interesting. Guess who became the monster holding fort? Yes, it was the Enchanted Defender.

Games_ED_B4.jpg

While the Defender stood behind the Fineas, it did one more great job. It took the blasts of the opponent’s Pyromancer. The additional armors did find some great use. But the great part was that once at the front, the opponent's ranged attacks couldn’t get through the armor soon enough.

And the result was that the Defender was still standing at the end of the battle. And guess what, the monster’s one health without any armor stood there strong and tall.

Not in a thousand years would have I expected that outcome. 😊

Do I Use the Enchanted Defender Often?

I can actually count the number of times that I would have used the Defender, and I believe it would be greater than one but less than three. It’s a mind-twister. You will have to read it ten times to know how many times I had used the Defender.

In the battle that we saw, you notice how much I had to find monsters to keep the Defender alive till the end? That would not be normal game practice. You don’t get into the battle to defend one monster. You get into a battle to win. At that point, only the best is what you take, and sadly, the Defender does not make the cut.

It may have its use in the Health Rule. That is one place when its health increases to the best available between our monsters and the opponents’ monsters. Even then, if there are magic monsters in the opponent’s arsenal, then we don’t know how far the Defender would go. Either way, it has its uses in some cases.

How Does the Enchanted Defender Level Up?

The leveling up is another area that I found the Defender to be not so great. I mean, you level up only to find the monsters’ speed increasing by one but no changes at all to the health. The only good part is the thorns ability that gets added from level five onwards. Have a look:

Games_ED_LevelUp.jpg

But here’s my question, even if the thorns ability and with a totally leveled up card, will you use the Defender in place of another monster with better health, speed, and attack value? Probably, no. That’s my only submission with the Enchanted Defender.

But the Battle Draws a Different Picture

True that. The Defender was the champ in case of the battle that we played. But take a closer look, and you will find that more than one reason allowed the Defender to stay till the end. To the very end, in fact, and therefore, becoming a champ. 😊

Anyway, that was my personal observation, and I know that there would be many more players out there who would have a different strategy with the Defender. I would be keen to read such strategies for sure.

You had a fantastic strategy, it seemed. And Enchanted Defender is more Defender than Enchanted to me. Keep on battling.
