The last day of winter!

Winter has put on a very special good bye for us here!

I am currently placing my posts in the smaller communities and encourage others to try the same.

It is for the benefit of everyone to build all of the communities on Hive!

Today is our first hot Spring day and all snow has rapidly departed with the onset of the sharper Spring sun.
We have sent winter packing to the northern countries 🤣

083.JPG

A Sacred Ibis making it's way over in the lovely blue sky!

226 2.JPG

Here is a similar shot of the first picture, but the cloud has changed and I was in a different position!

209 2.JPG

Almost looks like Spring colors here above!

203.JPG

I love the far off blue tint of the approaching clouds!

492.JPG

This photo above is a closer shot of the following picture!

496.JPG

This was the full picture at our sunset!

Yes, we have been drowning in the last two weeks of winter and blue sky was very rare, not even to speak of no sun.
South Africa is slowly emerging from a long period of drought and at one stage most of our dams were almost empty.
But thankfully it seems that the drought is now almost history as many of our dams are full of water.

Oh, and the weatherman says that there is more rain to come, so hopefully the farmers will have bumper crops this year.

This year 2020 has been a most difficult year, especially with the devastation on health and the economy that the Covid virus has sown, but we are all fighters and we shall rise again.
At least the rain has brought some great solace.
Such is life!

And That's All Friends!

I leave you with this:

“Health is the new wealth. Happiness is the new rich. Inner peace is the new success. Kindness is the new cool.” —Syed Balkhi

What a beautiful area you have there in your part of South Africa. I am happy that you all are getting a bit more rain. The weather is a bit wonky all over the world. Best of health and thank you for sharing your photos.

Thank you for the visit Sir.
Yeah, we certainly have a bit of a paradise here, as this bay where we live is backed by mountains and fronted by the ocean. There are also many wine, fruit and other farms here that depend heavily on the rain.
The weather is certainly creating havoc all over.

Blessings and best of health also to you!

Are these clouds or the fluff your wife has put outside for the squirrel mama? 😉
The clouds look beautiful and so fluffy - yes, it is looking very spring like now.

Hahaha, I so wish she could pull the fluffy clouds down Hannes.
There will be fluff galore for everyone and even a soft cloud bed for me lol.

Not quite yet, but I will show you what it looks like in about two or three weeks time.
This place changes into a color kaleidoscope lol.

Cheers and thanks!

Oh yes, such clouds look so fluffy 😁

That's the greatest thing in spring - it changes so very fast from gray to green and all other colors 😊

Almost like a magic world Hannes,

One can go to sleep and the next morning everything looks different.
I have a gooseberry bush here in a pot that I am keeping a close eye on to see if I have it in the right place.
If it is happy and start to grow, I will plant it right there.

Cheers and thanks!

Sometimes it goes really fast in spring.
That's a good idea to let it in the pot to see if it likes the place. I have never heard that someone does such.

Yes Hannes, over here spring is overnight stuff lol.

We call it "orientation" as if you leave it in a pot you can move it around until you see that it's happy.

If you plant it and it doesn't perform, then you have to dig it up again to plant it elsewhere and if it's not happy in the new place then you will continue to dig holes until your garden looks like a mole, or a minefield full of holes hahahah.

Cheers and thanks!

Yeah, as said it's a great idea and I will certainly keep it in mind should I ever have my own garden or if someone asks me for advice where to plant 😊

Well, I hope that you will have a garden when you move back to your parents place Hannes.
I see that JJ is now also hanging out Hummingbird feeders in his garden and he seems to be doing great in his new life of retirement.

Something for you to also look forward to, as then you can take rides any time that you want to?

Cheers and thanks!

Oh yes, there's garden all around the house 😁

That's something I'm really longing for: the freedom to do whatever whenever 😁

Right, JJ has bought a super telezoom lens and practices bird photography and patience 😉

Great to hear then and maybe you can even use a patch to grow your own organic veggies my friend, or does that sound like work? 🤣

It will come Hannes when it is due.

Yeah, I got JJ and Steevc to become interested in the zooms, but I also continue to use that word "patience" hahaha.
The chase is over when one retires and it's difficult to shake it off.

But then again I had a friend that used to take his chair outside to sit in the sun every day. For the whole day and he died a year and a few months later.
Almost like he gave up as he made his work his life.

So it is essential for one to understand that one has to stay active.

Fortunately you don't sound like the giving up type my friend.

Cheers and thanks!

Well, that sounds like work which would keep me from the things I want to do: travel and photographing 😊

I have over the years also always dreamt of travel, but the dreams become less over time. Can you believe that I have never left the African continent. My wife and most of my friends have, but I have never had the chance to go.

Yeah, thankfully you and I are both active souls!

Cheers and thanks!

From the Netherlands to the Swiss Alps? That's a daytrip 😉
Seriously, you could certainly plan a very nice route through several countries and/or the Schwarzwald (Black Forest) in Germany and spend a week or even two on the road.

That's my idea for retirement too: to have a small camper van for traveling.

No Hannes, no day trip and doing almost exactly what you described.
My plan is 4 weeks, (one month) and somehow I also want to see the old churches in Prague.
Rome will also be a stop and France and I will pop into Austria to visit you and my friend Gustaf Schwarzenegger that also lives there, but he is not on Hive.

A camper van is definitely the best way to go.

Cheers and thanks!

Gustaf Schwarzenegger? Never heard of him. Is he related to Arnold? 😉

Yes, you will need at least 4 weeks to visit all these places. Our roads might be better than the ones in South Africa, but we have many villages where you have to slow down, and the mountain roads are small, unless you want to speed up and use the boring Autobahn, what I don't think you will.
The distances might look very short on the maps, but they take more time than you think ;)

You are planning a great trip, my friend, just tell me when you're here and I will be there ... somewhere ... maybe in Africa 🤣 lol

I don't know if he is related Hannes, but will ask him.

Yes a friend did the trip in a big mobile home as he had his family with him. He said that he struggled in some of the narrow roads, especially in the towns.
We are only two, so I will get one of the smallest ones which should help a lot with negotiating the roads.
Autobahn will only be good for me if I have a Maserati or some other fast sports car, so no I will not use it.
Besides it is always much more interesting to take the back roads, as you know with your Harley.

Maybe you will be here before I take the trip if you continue to look for trouble with your wife hahaha.

Cheers and thanks!

Our speed limit is 130 on the Autobahn, I wouldn't know what a Maserati would be good for. But on the alpine roads I would love to have one for quick overtaking slower cars 😁
If you don't tell her I can live my life here in peace because she doesn't read my conversations, I hope 🤣

Oh! I thought that the Autobahn had no speed limit???
Maybe in Germany?

What is the speed limit on the Alpine roads?

No need for me to ever mention anything to her hahaha.
But I share your hope that she will never read your stuff, as then it will certainly be Africa for you mate lol.
Imagine saying her dialect is like "barking", that is Glock stuff my friend hahaha.

Cheers and thanks!

Yes, in Germany they have no speed limit on some of their highways / Autobahn.

I have written so many things since I have joined this blockchain and also on the other blockchain that I believe even Antarctica wouldn't be far enough away 😁 lol

Since she lived only close to the border her dialect is not that bad and we have been living in Klagenfurt for so many years now, that our dialect has changed to a more neutral Carinthian dialect.

I think that it has to be sheer torture to drive a sports vehicle that can go to 250kmh for long distances with a 120kmh speed limit. All of our roads have a limit of 120kmh and if you are caught n camera speeding, arrest you and lock you up lol.

Ah, you will have to sleep with one open until you depart for a distant place at the other side of Antarctica lol.

So, now you are saying that it took you many years to teach her to speak with a neutral accent.
My friend, I suggest that you keep a set of packed luggage in a hidden place hahaha.

Cheers and thanks!

I agree, only sometimes it would be great to have a bit more horsepower when you overtake on small curvy alpine roads.

Well, if you say it this way it sounds bad for me 😁 but I said "we" and my dialect was very different too. For example we pronounce many "s" as "sh", but not all 😉

That's why I love our little VW Polo Maxx/Cross Hannes.
It has a 1600cc motor and plenty of power for overtaking, plus it is small enough to squeeze through gaps.
The only thing that I don't like is the low profile 17 inch wheels. I like to have more rubber on the road and we are now in the process of changing the wheels.
The car is a pleasure on the city and town roads, but on gravel those flat tires make for a jarring ride.

Okay, so you say the fact you said "we" will save your bacon.
The way that I know women is that they personalize everything and I don't think that "we" is going to count for very much hahaha.

Glad that you don't call me "Shtephen" hahaha.

Cheers and thanks!

That is what the tire sales manager said to me yesterday Hannes.
I explained to him that drive in town on tarred roads and in our work on gravel roads.
Everyone on the farms drive 4 wheel drive trucks and in town they drive Mercedes Benz cars.

So he said that I must get myself a 4x4 truck for the gravel roads hahaha
I laugh because I cannot even afford a second hand 4x4 and those are thirsty things that guzzle gas.
What would I do with two cars in any case as at any time I can only drive one lol

Hahaha, you guys certainly have language problems lol.

Cheers and thanks!

He wants to sell his stuff ;)

We have always had only one car because our working times are the same most times. A few years ago my wife bought her own car and since our kids have their driving licenses I know it was a good decision, because my car is always somewhere else and my wife's car is often used my our daughter - so I am very glad that I still have my motorbike.

Maybe - the dialects vary from valley to valley ;)

Yeah, true sales talk lol.

Your wife was wise as now the the kids have cars to get around in and I know that daddy will keep an eye to make sure that the cars stay in a good condition lol.
My daughters bought their own cars, but my son turned out to be a huge problem.

I bought him a car and he smashed it. Also the second and the third car, so I stopped.
Eventually he bought his own car, but the reckless guy also smashed that one and so one it went for many years.
Has he calmed down? I don't know as I haven't seen him now for a few years, but we continue to pray for him every day.

That's why I say that you are blessed to have a good relationship with your son.

As far as the dialects go, people tend to congregate with likewise other people and they form clusters in countries.

Cheers and thanks!

Oh well, I hope he will not have any accidents as I want to save my money for a camper van 😁

People are driving different here as you know, and if he had so many accidents the insurance would become too expensive one day.

I hope your son will visit you one day in a slow family van. I've been driving very fast too when I was younger, but with the kids came a family van and now I like to drive a comfortable speed ... at least most times 😁

I think that the diving conditions, even if the roads are tricky, are much better than here and some om my kids accidents were caused by too much alcohol, although he will never admit it. Plus he has never had insurance.

I still drive fairly fast, but nothing like in my young days and my son is over 40 already so I don't know what it's going to take to change him my friend.

Cheers and thanks!

Yes, of course over all our roads should be better and they are maintained continuously.
You would not get a number plate here without an insurance, but alcohol is the reason for many accidents too.

That is what I thought about your roads Hannes.
We have many potholes in the roads here and maintenance is a regular problem.

We pray for him every day like I said and there is nothing that the Lord cannot change.

At times we have holes here that can swallow a bus, but our damaged roads are first class compared to the roads of some of the neighboring countries.
We rather drive in the bush there instead of on the roads and when you get a good stretch of road, you are so tired from dodging all of the obstacles that you want to fall asleep behind the wheel 🤣

Thank you, and I still think that your law not to issue a number plate without a mandatory insurance is a brilliant idea.
Many drivers here have no insurance, so one loses out when they crash into your car.
In fact it happened to one of my friends and although the guy promised to pay for the damages he never did.

Cheers and thanks!

If you have an accident you normally don't have to worry about getting your car repaired. Either your own insurance pays or the insurance of the other car.
Of course sometimes it's not that easy, but nevertheless better than without an insurance.

Have seen your question too late ;)
City limit is 50 km per hour and the speed limit outside or villages is 100, but that depends on the roads and other conditions, so sometimes it's 80 or 70, but 100 max.

Cheers and !BEER

(Edited)

No problem, I suppose most of the roads are in the mountains and it's wise to have a max limit of 100kph.
Our town limits interchange between 40 and 60max. Long distance national roads are 120kph.
So when one travels long distance and you see a stretch of very long open road of about 90km long, you can only drive along it at 120kmh.

Cheers and thanks!

0
0

Yes, on most roads the 100 kph is enough, but some speed limits are not understandable for me, and I don't mean slower limits, I either think sometimes it's much too fast.

Cheers and !BEER

Well in South Africa we are used to much higher speeds, that's why guys still het caught doing 180kmh on a 60kmh road. Some guys in flashy cars even get caught doing 280kmh on the long 120kmh limited roads.
We have flat, straight roads as far as the eye can see all over in this country and in the days of the old Chevrolet V8 and Ford V8s, there were no speed limits.

Cheers and thanks!

0

Some people drive that fast too here, I mean 200 or faster, but I haven't heard of 280. That would be too fast for most of our roads.

I plan my trips that I am back or at my destination before it gets to dark, because riding in the night is too unsafe and I don't like to ride or drive in the dark anymore anyway.

My longest trip so far has been about 600 kilometers to vacation and a week later back home.

But I ride quite a lot more than most Harley riders. My bike is 2 years old and has already 42,000 km.

So funny, as we are also avoiding night driving. All of my very long trips took place when I was much younger, but now oncoming cat lights trouble me.
Plus no one stops at red traffic lights at night in fear of being attacked.

Was that the trip to Tunisia?

Yeah, I know some guys that bought Harleys just for the show of it and most times the bikes are parked at their homes hahahah.

I hate driving by night especially when it's raining. It's very seldom here that someone runs over a red light. At least I don't see it often. There are also cameras installed at many junctions which make very expensive photos when someone runs a traffic light at red 😂

No, Tunisia would be a bit too far - about 2,000 km one way through Italy 😊 It was to Croatia only 😉

It's the same here. Many only ride around the lake or for a coffee. They are for posing only. I don't buy an expensive motorbike and don't use it as much as I can. When the weather is fine I ride to work every day and I don't mind a little rain 😉

Wow, Croatia, must have been a great visit. If I was a jealous man I would be, but you certainly have some interesting countries within your reach.

That's the mistake my step daughter's husband made. He is a very clever man, but also a sly bugger. I organized him a job in the IT department of a major bank and he was doing so well there as project manager, that he bought himself a showboat Harley.

Like you said, he used it for short runs on Sundays, but then he also started picking up shady women. That Harley cost him his marriage.

Well I will admit that I was dumb, but we didn't always know we were dumb at the time, we didn't realize the damage sun did to our skin

Oh yeah, we are both dumb guys lol.
The sad thing is that I see so many roasting themselves in the hot sun here on our beaches. Now, I was never a "tanner" and I so wish that I can sit down with each of them to explain what's going to happen to their skins when they get older.

But Marian will slap me because most of them are women 🤣

Ohh I see people sunning on the beaches and even Lulu does more than I would like her to, but not as bad as some we see on the beaches, if they only knew the damage they could be doing to themselves, but I think for some they don't care its all about the tan

At the tanning moments in life, looks are more important than health JJ.
Besides the traders need to sell tons of tanning oil and everyone is pushing the great looks of a brown tanned skin.
It is so bad that when I took my shirt off at the hospital a nurse came and said that she wishes she had a brown skin like mine hahaha.
Now that I am older the color is still there, but the creases of life tends to spoil things hahaha.

Blessings!

Well for many yes, for me thats never been an issue, I guess to some that make me a sloth as I do not care what I look like for the most part, apart from when I shave I seldom ever look in the mirror lOL

Ohh yes and of course the companies that make them push the looking tanned equals beautiful to sell their products

Hahaha, me as well, but at least you had your colored socks going for you 😁
I have also never been a sucker for looks as it the inside that counts lol.

Yeah, hire a few models and stick the instant tan oils on them in a marketing ploy.
Instant success as the product flies off the shelves!

Blessings!

the inside is what counts, OHH YESS that ios so true and what I believe

Integrity and honesty are two words that most companies only use for marketing, but seldom follow

Well then we share that belief my friend.

You are so right, as the only aim is to make profits and they will say and do anything as long as it can drive their profits. People are seen as markets lol.

Yes you are feeling Spring and we are feeling Fall with frost warning which put me in a panic harvest to get the produce in before it freezes.
Love the photo of the sacred Ibis - so beautiful along with your sunset!

I'm happy you are getting rains and putting an end to the drought, at least get some sort of break since you were hit so hard with the lockdowns!
Hope all is well with you and Marion and you are enjoying the coming Spring!

Thank you and it was indeed a great experience in the early spring day my friend.
Unfortunately we are again being shut down now at 6pm, no power for 2'5 hours, so I will have to complete the comments later.
Blessings to you!

I feel for you having your power shut down. It does go to show you how reliant we are on the power grid with all the conveniences and marvelous ways it opens our worlds through cyberspace.

Thank you and yes, we have become absolutely reliant on electricity.
I feel for the economy, as all of the small businesses suffer and with the covid shutdowns many of them had to close down resulting in extra unemployment.
