Memorial Day 2020: Remembering and Powering Down on Steem ...

(Edited)

Memorial Day is the American holiday where we remember and honor those of our military who paid the ultimate sacrifice to retain our freedoms.

My father served in the U. S. Army in World War II. My father-in-law served in the U. S. Air Force and spent two years as a German POW (Prisoner of War). Both passed on years ago, but we still remember all they taught us.

Three of my children are military veterans and either have served or are still serving honorably and to the best of their ability.

"War" on COVID-19

While we can no longer talk with them, my beloved and I can't help but wonder what our fathers would have thought about the "war" being "fought" against COVID-19. Here in America. And around the world.

There is an old saying here in America - "The apple didn't fall far from the tree ..." This would be true for both of us, as we remember our fathers.

So ...

We can't ask them, but we have a pretty good idea. While they would take this "pandemic" seriously and exercise prudence in what they did in going about their lives, they most certainly would not be fearful. And they most likely would have a lot to say about the notion we all just need to go hide in our homes while the world falls down around us.

I may write another post on COVID-19 someday, but my readers of my posts know my position. I was skeptical of the "lock down" of America from Day 1. In many ways, we are thankful our fathers did not live to see this. We cannot imagine they would be happy to see what has become of far too much of the country they sacrificed so much to protect.

"War" between the Steem and Hive Blockchains

In my mind, it borders on sacrilege to compare anything in the "virtual worlds" on the Steem and Hive blockchains to the challenges of the "real world."

Still, the word "war" gets a "lot of play" these days and since the "Valentine Day Surprise" it just seems to keep escalating. The recently executed HF23 on the Steem blockchain took the whole mess to another level.

Source: Creator TheDigitalArtist on Pixabay

With the little time I am currently willing to invest in looking into all the details, I saw enough this morning to make a reluctant, but final decision (barring some extraordinary reversal of recent patterns ...). The delegations in the accounts over which I have some influence have been stopped. Once these delegated amounts have been fully restored to their accounts next Saturday morning, I will execute a full powerdown in all of them.

As I find more and more of the Steem blockchain in ruins, the one aspect of the "war is hell" imagery I could see applying is that of "collateral damage". A lot of good people who had absolutely nothing to do with all that has gone on between the two "enemy combatants" have been hurt by it.

Beyond that, I have nothing more to say on the subject. As a mere "1%'er," I have learned my view on these internal issues doesn't matter.

Thank you for reading my Memorial Day post, dear reader. Under the circumstances of the crazy world in which we live, I hope you and yours have been able to enjoy a comparatively good day. My beloved and I did and all is well with us here.

Respectfully,
Hivian @roleerob

Related to the first part of the post - I totally know how you feel, or I try to - because my grandpa fought in WW2 and he never returned since then. Hopefully, there won't be any war coming up...

Thank you for stopping by and adding value to this post. World War II impacted most of the world @gabrielatravels. I wonder how we would ever know of anyone who's life it did not impact. Certainly some more than others.

Having read a lot of history, I wonder what the view is in your country of the aftermath of that war? Your grandfather gave his life for his family and his country. Only to find afterwards that it was under the control of the Soviet Union? How is that part of the war viewed there?

I have a feeling the heroes in your family will find the covid battle much more difficult to fight than any other battle they were trained to fight.

And don't think belittle your 1%er view! In terms of DPoS on the chain it probably doesn't make any impact, but in terms of physical presence in a virtual world, 100 x 1%er can be a powerful voice

Thank you for stopping by and adding value to this post @livinguktaiwan. It is always interesting, at least to me, how different people view the topic of war.

"... the covid battle much more difficult to fight than any other battle ..."

Perhaps. But, as I allude to in this post, we do not think they would have been supportive of the "battle plan" conceived and how it has been carried out. At least here in America. Never before, in similar times of distress, was this the response.

"... 100 x 1%er can be a powerful voice"

No question of that. There is just the small matter of them being in agreement. And, if that were ever managed, staying unified long enough to effectively address whatever challenge they face.

Dear @roleerob, Korea's Memorial Day is June 6. In the Korean War, 50,000 American soldiers died and disappeared. In the Vietnam War, Korea and the United States allied. Koreans always respect and remember the American soldiers who died.

Did your sons participate in the Iraq war in 2003? Would you be proud of your sons?

Thank you for stopping by and letting me know that @silvergrifin007. It is a part of our "human condition" that we all face various aspects of war. You and I likely have similar views of many of them. A Syrian "in here," however, with whom I recently had a "vigorous" exchange, views America as the "root of all evil" and the Korean War was our fault ...

No, my children have served only in peace time. At least up until now. We'll see what the future holds, for the one still in service.

I believe that Christianity created America's democracy and republicanism.

It seems that the Syrians are hostile to the United States because they have had a long war with Christian Europe. On the other hand, Koreans believe that Korea's independence was achieved because the United States fought war with the Soviet Union, Red China and Japan.

Koreans remember that they allied with Americans in the Korean War and the Vietnam War and fought against communist countries.
Currently, I want the United States to contribute to the development and spread of democracy and republicanism in East Asia.

It is a pity that the Muslim world rejects American democracy and republicanism.

Yes @silvergrifin007, we have similar views. Sadly, the America you often cite is in the process of becoming something very different. And not in a good way ...

I had hoped to engage this Syrian in a civil and respectful exchange, but it ended with their use of some slanderous and inflammatory language which was just unacceptable to me. I had hoped to "see through the eyes" of another and try to understand why the Muslim world seems to prefer strong men ruling over them.

Honorable senior, the United States is losing its Christian faith, but Jesus built the United States. Jesus shouted that he would recover three days after destroying the temple in Jerusalem.
Eventually, Jesus will bring America back to Christianity. Man is impossible, but Jesus is possible.

The war between Christianity and Islam will last forever unless Muslims believe in Jesus as their Savior.
Only those who believe in Jesus as the only God are saved.
Eventually, the descendants of Ishmael cannot become Abraham's children.
So, looking at Islam, I believe in the Bible.
God predestinates who will be saved and who will not be saved.

Good night! I am go to sleeping! hahaha

Thank you for your thoughts, my Korean friend, but we do not see the future the same way. The Old Testament is a clear (to me) historical record of the rise and fall of nations as He wills. America is falling ...

The humanist, progressive agenda is being relentlessly advanced and those "warring" against it are, at best, holding their own, but it is very difficult to be encouraged. In many respects, the older generation here is what is "holding the line" and we will be gone soon enough ...

The world's response to COVID-19 appears to be a "gateway" in to some as yet unclear "new normal" world. Whatever shape it takes, my friend, it is highly unlikely you and I will be favorably disposed towards it.

The economic destruction wrought so far is already at "unprecedented" levels. What do you think is going to happen, as people become increasingly more desperate, in this face of what this represents for our future? We'll both find out together ...

Until "next time," I hope you get a great night's rest @silvergrifin007! 👋

this war between steemit and hive is sad, each one would have followed his path and everything would be better. But apparently, the human being likes conflicts ... :(

Yes, very sad @blessed-girl. Those who fall in the "collateral damage" group have no real effective means of redress for losses suffered.
