Who said that to be beautiful a series has to be original and over the top?
Take City on a Hill, one of the novelties of the Showtime season and you will discover that sometimes a great classic, if done well, can give emotions, emotional transport and tension.

This is the case of this series set in Boston in the early '90s, which as often happens in all those products set in the city of the Celtics and the Red Sox, sees Ben Affleck as producer. The Boston boy has developed a healthy obsession with products set in his city and with robberies, corrupt cops and over-the-top characters in the background.

Helping him in this little worry of his is super writing, capable of generating pungent and tight dialogue, jokes to glue on the post-it in the bedroom and a plot that runs straight to the point without getting lost in trinkets and complicated abstractions.

To embellish the whole cast of excellent level where stands out a Kevin Bacon, dirty, rude, empty, ruthless, cynical and bastard who plays the FBI agent Jackie Rohr manages to bring out the best of his vast repertoire.
It's him who is the fulcrum of it all, while often leaving room for other excellent characters who often have to leave the scene to a character and an actor simply with a higher class.

And it's strange that when we talk about Rohr/Bacon we talk about class, since what his character exudes is the opposite. An agent struggling with alcohol problems, a fedifrago, absent from his family, emotionless, unminded. Yet in this tremendous emptiness of his he manages to find a foothold in his work, in the search for fame and power, the fame that has touched him several times in his career in his Boston but that now begins to become a faded memory.
And so the disappearance of 3 agents during an armored car robbery will become the perfect call to return to the limelight again.
Rohr won't think twice about it and in doing so he will drag a new African-American prosecutor with him, struggling with professional problems and not with respect to the white community in Boston and especially with respect to corrupt agents he had tried to prosecute.
A strange couple that made up Ward and Rohr. A man in search of law and justice vs. a man in search of notoriety, a lawyer who studies as a politician vs. a man of action with no holds barred tongue, a quiet and calm man vs. an aggressive and cunning one.
Together they will set up a para legal circus that will try to get to the bottom of this story.
Let's finally see Sarah Shai on the screens again after the spectacular experience in Person of Interest. Not a part of this caliber but still a great addition to the cast.

The story will soon begin to develop linearly, taking sometimes unexpected turns, other times less that will lead to results not exactly unpronounceable but still of great impact.
In short, a classic detective story, well written, well shot, well acted that does not surprise but that after all, I like it a lot. And sorry if this is not much.

Chi lo ha detto che per essere bella una serie deve essere originale e sopra le righe?
Prendete City on a Hill, una delle novità della stagione di Showtime e scoprirete che a volte un grande classico, se fatto bene, può regalare emozioni, trasporto emotivo e tensione.

E' il caso di questa serie ambientata a Boston nei primissimi anni '90, che come accade spesso in tutti quei prodotti ambientati nella città dei Celtics ed i Red Sox, vede Ben Affleck come produttore. Il ragazzo di Boston ha sviluppato una certa sana ossessione per prodotti ambientati nella sua città e con sullo sfondo rapine, poliziotti corrotti e personaggi sopra le righe.

Ad aiutarlo nella realizzazione di questo suo piccolo cruccio vi è una scrittura super, capace di generare dialoghi pungenti e serrati, battute da incollare sul post-it in cameretta ed una trama che fila dritta al punto senza perdersi in gingilli e complicate astrazioni.

Ad impreziosire il tutto un cast di ottimo livello dove spicca un Kevin Bacon, sporco, rude, vuoto, spietato, cinico e bastardo che nell'interpretare l'agente dell'FBI Jackie Rohr riesce a tirare fuori il meglio del suo repertorio vastissimo.
E' lui ad essere il fulcro di tutto, pur lasciando spesso spazio ad altri ottimi personaggi che loro malgrado devono spesso lasciare la scena ad un personaggio ed un attore semplicemente con una classe maggiore.

Ed è strano che a parlare di Rohr/Bacon si parli di classe, visto che quello che il suo personaggio trasuda è l'opposto. Agente alle prese con problemi di alcol, fedifrago, assente in famiglia, privo di emozioni, menefreghista. Eppure in questo suo tremendo vuoto riesce a trovare appiglio nel lavoro, nella ricerca della fama e del potere, quella fama che lo ha toccato più volte in carriera nella sua Boston ma che adesso inizia a diventare un ricordo sbiadito.
Ed ecco che la sparizione di 3 agenti nel corso di una rapina ad un blindato diverrà il perfetto richiamo per tornare di nuovo sotto le luci della ribalta.
Non ci penserà su 2 volte Rohr e nel farlo trascinerà con se un nuovo procuratore afroamericano alle prese con problemi professionali e non rispetto alla comunità bianca di Boston e soprattutto rispetto ad agenti corrotti che aveva cercato di perseguire.
Una strana coppia quella costituita da Ward e Rohr. Un uomo alla ricerca di legge e giustizia vs uno alla ricerca di notorietà, un avvocato che studia da politico vs un uomo d'azione senza peli sulla lingua, un uomo tranquillo e pacato vs uno agguerito e scaltro.
Insieme metteranno su un circo para legale che proverà ad arrivare fino in fondo a questa storia.
Rivediamo finalemtne Sarah Shai sugli schermi dopo la spettacolare esperienza in Person of Interest. Non una parte di simile caratura ma comunque un'ottima aggiunta al cast.

Le vicende inizieranno ben presto a svilupparsi linearmente, prendendo pieghe talvolta inaspettate, altre volte meno che porteranno ad esiti non proprio impronosticabili ma comunque di grande impatto.
Un classico poliziesco insomma, ben scritto, ben girato, ben recitato che non stupisce ma che in fondo piace, tanto. E scusate se questo è poco.
