Market Friday - Ethnic Supermarket and What is GHEE?

avatar

Yay, it is #marketfriday! I love this challenge hosted by the lovely @dswigle. I encourage everybody to join the community and share your shopping experiences. It is fun and interesting. 😊

Today I will take you to another ethnic supermarket that I visited in New York. It is a spice shop! Hundreds and thousands of bags and jars and stuff!!! Too much to describe in one post for sure.

I just want to emphasize some products I usually buy in these places, like pickles, especially chili:

Or dried fruit....

Or juices, or roti...

All of the above have a place in my shopping cart and in my pantry in Jersey. But today I would like to talk about GHEE...

What Is Ghee?

Ghee is clarified butter. As a matter of fact, it is a clarified cooking fat.

In the past it was used to fuel lamps. I remember my grandma used it as ointment for skin wounds.

Today ghee is used in cooking, and this is good, because it has a great flavor and it is loaded with health benefits.

The lactose is dramatically reduced in the process of boiling the butter, and so other bad components. I am lactose intolerant, but honestly, I don’t use ghee in cooking because I don’t like fat in general. Like all other fats, ghee is my enemy. 😛 Of course, in excess.

However, for a heathy person and a healthy diet, ghee is a great pick. It has a higher burning point than other cooking fats, it is easy to digest and it is said that it reduces inflammation. It is rich in vitamin A, it helps with insulin resistance, so it is good for diabetics. Some people swear that it fights cancer.

As far as I know, it is a good moisturizer for skin and even for scalp. I know this from my granny.

Ghee became very popular in the past years because of the trending Paleo diet, which is high in fat. I’ve seen many recipes for ghee with various flavors like garlic or ginger, and I always wondered who’s eating that? Until I went to a fancy restaurant and I saw “ghee” on the menu: poached salmon with ghee, lobster with ghee sauce, coffee with ghee....☕️

My conclusion is that ghee can be used in everything, so I won’t be surprised to see ghee tacos 🌮 , ghee burritos 🌯 , ghee steaks 🥩 ...

... so... that’s it for today’s #marketfriday. I hope you enjoyed my post and you learned a thing or two. Looking forward to read all the posts under this tag, you guys are awesome. See you next week.

Thats a market back when my wife didn't have diet restrictions she would have loved to visit and picking up supplies, she spent some of her early years in India and loved the spices and such and she knew what it was and how to use Ghee

I'm on the high fat train, and here in Malaysia, ghee is used often and commonly. Very yummy! I did not know about using for skin. I have been having some non-healing wiunds, and will give it a try. Thank you for the tip, @starjewel.

Just asked Marian and she agrees with you about the health properties of Ghee my friend. Something new, but then again I don't cook.
Okay, let me qualify by saying I can cook biscuits Lol.
Blessings!

It is more about spices, although they have a big area with frozen stuff too... but I am not brave enough to buy products that I never heard about, like some weird name of fish... lol....

This was great @starjewel and I know so many don't know or use ghee, but, it has made a comeback. My grandmother also used it and I can remember growing up reading recipes that called for clarified butter but at the time, had no idea they were speaking about ghee.

Let me say that those pickles would be on my list!! I love pickles and pickles with a kick? Oh, yes, please! I love spice shops and I cannot ever get enough of these on MarketFriday, although I got three this week, each is so different and in different countries! So interesting! And I love the aroma as I wander through them. I have an amazing one in Alexandria, it is in an old antique building from centuries ago and it is renovated, but, has that old-world feel to it. A perfect setting!

Getting back to ghee, I have to say that I use it. I have butter and I have ghee. I use ghee probably more than I use butter and I love the flavor and it really is great to use when making eggs.

I had no idea about using it on the scalp, but, it doesn't surprise me. Thank you so much for your entry, which is always interesting and teaching me something I didn't know. I love this place for that!

Have a great day!!

#MarketFriday loves you!
